Do I have insomnia?

 
I can't fall asleep until 1 or 2 in the morning! And, I have to get up every weekday at 6:30. I know I need more sleep. It's making me not grow as tall as I should. How can I fall asleep faster? I've tried classical music, reading boring books and just laying in bed.

The key to falling asleep is not thinking that you HAVE to fall asleep. If you think that you have to you will worry that you aren’t sleeping when you’re supposed to be and then get stressed and stay up. The second step is to make sure you aren’t ingesting ANYTHING with caffeine in it after 2 pm. That includes tea, chocolate, soda, coffee and energy drink. The lasting affects could be disrupting your sleep patterns.
 
One thing you could try is to do some sort of physical activity a few hours before bed. I will go to the gym and then do a brisk walk. By the time I get home I am exhausted and fall right to sleep. Maybe the reason you’re awake is that your brain is processing a lot of stuff from the day. If you start a diary you can put those thoughts on paper and keep them from clogging up your mind. Also make sure your room is the right temperature, sometimes if your body is too hot or too cold it’s just too uncomfortable to sleep.

I have terrible insomnia I usually fall asleep between 2 and 4 and sometimes i dont fall asleep at all! I've gone to tons of doctors and had sleep studies and even had to be pulled from highschool bc of it. Ive had it for over a year but don't be worried about growing im 5'7 1/2 and taller then my mom and im 14. I would suggest trying to reset your "sleeping clock",(i suggest to do it a week u dont have school) which is: Going to sleep at 2am and waking up 8 hours later, the 2nd day go to bed at 1:30am and wake up 8 hours later, the 3rd day go to bed at 1am and wake up 8 hours later (and so on until u reach ur normal bedtime). If this doesn't work try asking your mom about going to a sleep doctor. They will probably start out with giving u natural sleep pills and if that doesnt work maybe some actual sleeping pills. I also tried something called melitonin which is natural and it actually helped me for a while. Hope this helps Laughing.

after reading this i think i way have it. i can never fall asleep when i want and ive already stopped growing. im only 5'1". can you do anything for this ?

Hi! When I have trouble falling asleep I use this trick!:
Tense up one body of your muscle at a time. Then after you've done every muscle, tighten your whole body up for 5 seconds, then relax. You'll fall asleep pretty soon afterwards! It totes help your body calm down and release stress.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Sorry this is really off subject but my bff is seeming really self centerd lately. when i played volleyball she kept saying how it got in the way of her plans she was gonna make with me and she and her mom put so much pressure on me. she even made me cry a few times. she really is a nice person but she just doesnt understand that i have my own plans too sometimes. she doesnt play a sport except for ice skating but thats for 45 min on tuesdays.now volleyball season is over so this problem shouldnt come up for a while, but im thinking about doing softball in the spring and im afraid this will come up again. HELP!!!

 

Hey chicky, the best thing to do is to talk about it with her. The only way she'll know she's bothering you and needs to stop is if you say something to her. So sit her down and let her know that sometimes she can be selfish. Let her know you love being her friend and is always there for her but need her to do the same thing for you. Hope this helps! Hey chica, syptoms of insomnia vary from person to person. People who have it may have trouble falling asleep, wake up too early in the morning, feel tired when they wake up or feel grouchy and anxious and unable to get things done during the day. So pay attention to your bod and note if any of that happens to you. If it does, ask your 'rents to take you to the doc so they can help ya out. Smile

I get sweat stains under my arms all the time, even when it's cold sometimes. I use a deoderant/antipersperant too, but it doesn't help.Any tips?

Try using stronger antiperspirants like clinical strength Secret or talk to your doctor about treating your excessive sweating. Don't worry, it happens to a lot of girls during puberty.

MOD so i have knee issues and the docs have taken many,many guesses and they always say"oh this is it!!" and then they put me on treatment and it doesnt work. so i had an appointment on fri and they took another guess and now i have physical therapy. im realy nervous cause i want this to be the answer and scared at the same time cause if they arent right this time then i have to get an mri. and i hear those are kinda scarey && you have 2 sit still the entire time and...just help me!!!

 

Hey girl, sorry to hear about your painful sitch.  I can totally see how this must be so frustrating for ya!  But just relax and focus on your physical therapy.  Worrying will do no good!  MRI's can be kinda scary and noisy, but they're just taking a better look at your knee.  You just sit there and wait for them to get a good picture-no biggie!  Getting an MRI done may help them finally figure out what's wrong so that you can be back to tip-top shape!  Don't worry, everything will be fine! im the same way! i am such a terrible sleeper!!! i cant fall asleep til at least 10:30-ish but its usually til like, 2 in the morning! its TERRIBLE! MOD~MOD~MOD is it rue that the amount of time u sleep can effect ur growth? cause thats wat it says in the original question--the girl says she's not growing as tall as she should because she doesn't get enough sleep. so is it true? does the amount of sleep you get effect your growth? thnx so much, <3BEASTIEZ

 

Hey missy, I'm not sure if the amount of sleep affects growth. But I know it affect your performance in school and emotions and moods. Children need about 8 to 9 hours of sleep, so rest up! Smile

hey mod, um for a really long time now, im not really sure how long, ive been waking up really early. it all depends on when i go to sleep. If i go to bed around 10, i usually wake up at 4. if i go to bed at about 10 30, i might wake up at three. and when i go to bed around 11 i wake up at maybe 2 or 2 30. It's really confusing, and I'm a little tired when i wake up. i go to the bathroom before i go to bed, am not stressed, and for some reason, when im with friends, or like when i have sleepovers, i tend to stay asleep. im not afraid or anything (my room can get pretty light inside because of the sky but it doesnt bother me at all) and i dont have anxiety, but is there a reason i keep waking up? thanks mod Smile




Hey girl, when you get into your teenage years, your biological rhythm (when you sleep, when you're awake) might be thrown off a bit. The solution? Do a little cardio and take a hot bath before you go to bed -- these help make you sleepy -- and make yourself sleep during those early hours. Your body will adjust and get back on track.

I sleep walk all the time and lately I have been doing it more frequently. I never remember but my mom tells me when I do because I have conversations with her. I have been sleepwalking more frequently now. Is something wrong with me and is there anything I can do to prevent it?

MOD* I have a very big and VERY real problem.i have a real passion for sweets, cakes, ect. my family says i ld be on food network. but if i eat sweets, i get SICKSICKSICK with painful diheriah, and its wrecking my life. ive had to miss school because of it, and im very legiitimately afraid that ill die. thats how bad it is.my mom keeps forgetting to call the doctor, and i cant take this on my own. HELP ME! This is DESTROYING my life, and ive got big plans!

 

Hey girl!  It sounds like you need to visit a doc to find out what the problem is.  You may be allergic to something in the sweets you're eating, so if  you can figure out what that something is, you might be able to avoid the food with it.  This way you can still have sweets without the nasty reaction. It's important to understand what is going on in your thoughts when you are having trouble sleeping. Try to guide your thoughts gently to a place where you can think of things that make you happy and calm.

Well i suggest you do workouts that specifically target the area you're having trouble with. Work with your legs a lot. I myself don't know specific workouts but if you google leg and butt workouts you'll find lots of options. Good luck! xoxo kerra

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG! (haha Smile ) today was the 1st day (exactly a week and 1 day from the 1st day) of changing in gym. I'm in 7th grade, almost 13 and my middle school is 7th-8th grade. so anyway, it's better than i though! most of us wore camis over bras and some just showed their bra. anyway, in a draw string bag where i kept:
2 pairs of clothes
1 hairbrush
5 scrunchies
deodarant
hairspray mini bottle
body spritz
and a headband
I am SO sweaty BEFORE gym (and that's only 3 out of 9 periods!) it makes major pit stains! body spritz isnt allowed but if i ever need it i have it just in case. how can i fresh up in 5 minutes MAX without everyone staring at me? NO ONE else does this!! its bad enough i gotta get 1/2 naked! Cry thank you!

Just because everyone else doesn't do it doesn't mean they don't need to. You might even start a trend! I remember body spray being a big deal after gym when I was in high school, haha. If you're still uncomfortable about it, you can take care of deodorant in the bathroom.

i hate when that happens ): once i couldn't sleep until 3 in the morning and that day i was supposed 2 give a speech 4 elections. i finally fell asleep and that morning when i was brushing my teeth i threw up. the beginning of the day was really rough, but i ended up winning so it was all worth it (:

Ugh! I hate not sleeping! I know that it's really stressful when you can't go to sleep, but just close your eyes and concentrait on your breathing. It's like a yoga class in bed, almost. And if you STILL can't go to sleep, DO NOT open your eyes!! That will make you look at the clock to see what time it is.

Studies show that when people keep looking at the clock, they will fall asleep slower.

modd! This is a bit akward and not at all related to sleep, but how can I ask my mom to start taking me to a gynecologist? I go to a chilren's doctor still, so i have about 3 doctors, but the one who checks my 'girl parts' is a male and it makes me VERY uncomfotable. I know he is a doctor and trained to do this, but i think I need a woman doctor who can understand my issues. Can you give me some suggestions on how to ask? p.s. i kno ive asked a lot of ?'s today, but thanks soooo much for all the great advice. i really appreciate itSmileSmile

 

Hey girl!  I'm really glad that I've been able to help you with all of your questions!  It can be a really awkward topic, but you don't have to address it really bluntly.  If a doctor appt. starts coming up, or your mom mentions a trip to the doc, ask her if you could try finding a new doctor.  Tell her that even though it's completely professional, you feel uncomfortable having a guy doctor do your physicals.  She should understand where your'e coming from, and you two can work together to try and find a new doctor that's right for you.  best, Kristen
