Lunch Line Revolution

Like lots of girls Wyntergrace Williams, daughter of talk-show host Montel Williams, had gripes about school lunch. But she didn’t just stand in the lunch line, complaining about mystery meat.

Wyntergrace has been lobbying Congress in Washington to change the Child Nutrition Act to include vegetarian lunch options in schools around the nation. She even starred in an ad promoting her campaign, which aired during The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Wyntergrace also met with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to discuss the need for healthier grub in cafeterias.

“I talked to them about my concern for animals and about why I am a vegetarian,” Wyntergrace says. “And, why I think that there should be a vegetarian option at schools because there [are] a lot of vegetarians at my school, too. They don’t have an option to eat, and the lunches are very unhealthy there,” Wyntergrace tells us.

Her friends, as well as the students, teachers, and parents at her school are all ready and excited for the Healthy School Lunch Revolution.

“A lot of the parents and teachers are all for it. I talked to a lot of people in my town and in other towns and they’re all for it. It just shows that a lot of people want healthier lunches and they want to have a healthier lifestyle.”

In fact, there is a petition (CLICK HERE for deets!) circulating the web that has over 88,000 signatures in favor of the bringing change to the caf. To join the revolution and speed up the process in your own school, you can sign the petition or start talking to your principals about ditching the corn dogs for some yummy veggie burgers.

I am somethime just appaled at my schools "heathly choices" The hamburgers and any other kind of meat looks like the kind you get in the kids kitchen sets! I pack my lunch and only get school lunch on days when they have pizza coming from a resturant. I am on a heathly diet and i know eating school lunches will be better for me. We have a salad bar but it doesnt seem like they have fresh ceggies so i never ever have salad. Sometimes they have fruit other times they have no fruit. they give out desserts that are never heathly. Also they allow kids to get seconds which is not heathly. They allready give out huge portions why give out more? Lastly the wait is about half of lunch period id you are last of the 4 classes to buy lunch. We only have 30min to eat and when you just sit down and every goes outside for like 10 minutes it just isnt fair because you want to go out too but you dont wait to eat in 3 minutes. I wish my school would exstend time and health choices.

My school has occasionally had some veggi options, but its super rare and in fact I haven't seen any of them at all this year. I recently switched to vegan and I doubt schools will ever have anything for those of us who are.

PhoniexRising777,
I'm not saying your opinion is wrong because everyone has a right to her own beliefs. The point of being Vegetarian or Vegan is , at least for me its because The animals are tortured at alot of the place your meat comes from. Have you ever watched A PETA video? It's terrible. They hang pigs by their legs and slit their throats open leaving them to die by blood loss. And the eggs you eat? The hatchling factories the crush the eggs so that the chicks will come out more quickly. They actually ground up the male chicks because they won't be of any use soon enough for the factories to keep them alive. And saying not eating them causes disease is so stupid. I mean the same could be said of humans. I mean look at all the diseases. Did you know swine flu was actually caused because of Scientist testing out different flus on pigs? I bet you didn't. And pesticides are terrible for everyone even those who eat meet because everyone needs water. the pesticides will contaminate our water supply and we as a human race will have less water to drink. Speaking of water did you know that half the fresh water used in the US goes to giving water to the animals they raise so that u can have meat? seems llike a waste to me

notyourbiz on 9/19/2009 11:39:31 PM

That's an awesome idea! At my school, our lunches are made by an organization called BistroKids, which offers healthy, and when lucky enough, locally grown food. We even have a vegetable garden on site at school!

Imagg100 on 9/19/2009 10:13:42 AM

I signed the petiton we really need it at my school! The other day they let us take a huge serving of fries and only two strawberries and that was the only fruit we had!

annaclare on 9/15/2009 7:08:22 PM

i signed the petition and i'm especially supportive of the healthy nondairy drinks. I'm lactose intolerantbut I was the only person in my grade that was at my old school. you could either get milk or water. and in order to get water you had to go ask the lunch lady if you could go to the water fountain. the water from the water fountain was gross. so i was sick tons of times cuz i had to drink the milk. thankfully now my middle school has other drinks you can get. but no one should be forced to choose between gross water and being sick. they should have choices for people who are allergic to stuff.

spllngmth on 9/13/2009 8:40:02 PM

yeah i'm a veggie but my school never has veggie options but i just pack my lunch i have never bought

sunnysun2311 on 9/13/2009 2:25:14 PM

totally awesome! im veg and i haven't even bothered to go through the lunch line at my high school (just started there on wednesday) becuz i know there are VERY few vegetarian options. and the ones that are are things like fries and cheese pizza - not exactly figure-friendly.

Ewww...veggie burgars are so nasty! My school has a salad bar thing for vegitarians and people who don't want to eat the other crap that they serve. Of course, the salads are still pretty nasty...I never really got vegitarianism. I mean, you're just taking more away from the animal's food source, and letting the population get waaay out of control. A couple years ago the deer population around my place got huge, and environmentallists wouldn't let us tone it down. Just as we thought, a blue-tongue epidemic swept the population and it almost died out.

It's amazing the number of "environmentallists" that have never seen the effects of what they do. I live on a farm, and see it firsthand every day. The EPA got on one of our neighbors a few years back and tried to take his land away cause he was using pesticides. fortunately, the judge dissmissed the case because it was so stupid. Trust me, people, I've been eating foods treated with pesticides for 14 years, and I'm just fine. So are me grandparents, who've done it for 80. :-D

PhoenixRising777 on 9/12/2009 11:47:29 AM

ima vegetarian and i wish my skewl had veggie burgerz

pretty.odd.patdforever on 9/12/2009 11:32:30 AM

This is so cool.
If my school could get healthier choices and veggie lunches too, I'd be so happy.
No more wilty lettuce and broccoli that's literary drowned in cheese.

volleyballgirl96 on 9/12/2009 11:24:08 AM

That's so cool! I go to a private school that has AMAZING lunches- well, sometimes, anyway- and I can almost always find a vegetarian option. I wasn't a vegetarian when I went to a public school, but I packed my lunch because the food was gross and unhealthy. There were some kids at that school, though, who had to buy the school lunch because their parents didn't have time or money to send them with a lunch from school. What if one of those kids had been a vegetarian? What were they supposed to do? Public school lunches should totally be healthier and have vegetarian choices.

Allyn on 9/11/2009 11:40:39 PM

Thanks MOD! But can u help me figure out how to be less nervous around my bf? Thanks again!

The thing to realize is that he's nervous too. This is probably one of his first times dating a girl, so you guys are feeling the same thing. The more you hang around him, the less nervous you'll feel, so since you're in the beginning stages of the relationship you're going to be nervous around him. When you guys hang out pick places that you can be active at, so you guys won't have to just sit and stare at each other, you can be moving around having fun. Try going  bowling or playing at an arcade.

Mod**** I have a problem. I really like this guy and he likes me. So we R going out. I am still nervous around him too. Well we started dating today and I haven't told my Mom yet. She might be mad that I ddnt tell her right away, or that I ddnt ask her first. She has been kinda upset with my behavior lately too. So I wonder, when do u think I should tell her? And how should I bring it up? And any other advice. Thankyou!

Hey missy, it's best to tell your mom asap. The sooner you tell her, the less mad she'll get if you tell her later. You could bring it up the next time you guys are chatting or you can sit her down and tell her.

My cafeteria actually has pretty healthy foods, but I bring my own lunch anyway, which is pretty healthy.

ash_bash08 on 9/11/2009 10:14:50 PM

Great idea! I signed the petition! Even meat eaters enjoy veggie burgers! (Psst! They taste the same!) As a vegetarian, this would be great! Packing lunch becomes a hassle after a while...

MOD please help....
so over the summer i started talking to this guy named brenden. he liked me and i liked him and we talked all summer. i coulnt wait to see him on the first day, but then, when the 1st day came... i met this new boy in my grade and oh my goodness i got butterflys just looking at this boy!!! but idk what to do now cuz brenden thinks i still like him and he still really likes me and i dont wanna hurt his feelings and lose our friendship. pleasee help!!

Hey babe,

You don't have to choose between these guys right away. You already know Brenden, so get to know this other guy better before you make your decision. You might just like the new guy because he's new (which is a normal reaction) but you don't want to pass up on a good thing you already have!

caligurl13 on 9/11/2009 8:21:53 PM

awesome!
im a vegetarian, and virtually NOTHING at my school supports that...even the salad has chicken on it >.<

purplecrazed on 9/11/2009 8:21:37 PM

im not a vegetarian but the vegetarian food in school sounds cool. i would try it. and if i like it, i might even start to make a healthy diet out of it.

at my school, your alternative options are salad [which has disgusting pieces of ham? on it] or a sandwich [there's never enough of those] or you pig out at the snack line. [chips, honey buns, gatorade, switches, cookies, everything]

it's not very healthy but i hardly eat at school anyways

NJessicaN on 9/11/2009 8:03:04 PM

SO cool! My school claims the food is healthy, but it's pizza and fries and nachos every day. Yuck....I'm a lunch-boxer. Smile

gladiator*girl on 9/11/2009 7:51:32 PM

MODMODMODDD!
I'm going to the mall tomorrow with some of my friends. I have about $10 to spend, and I don't know what to spend it on! Any suggestions? xoxo kacey

Hey babe,

don't spend it just to spend it! Wait and see if there's something that you really want or need that's in your budget before you actually buy anything. If you don't spend it will be $10 more than whatever you are going to have next time you go to the mall and that will give you a bigger budget to work with.

xoxo Allie

I think our lunches should just change, lunches back when would be so much better, our school makes kids eat lunches, but they don't eat it because it is, well, gross, not to offend anyone. But this shouldn't become a law in schools of veggie options, cus no onee in out school is a vegitarian. I could see a salad bar, but not veggie burgers. And any vegitarians that diagree with eating animals, post a comment here or on my profile. See ya girlies.

i<3pigs on 9/11/2009 7:24:17 PM

How about just bringing your own lunches to school?
Their WAAAAY healthier and you don't have to reside to eating, God forbid, processed foods and what not. Actually, I think I saw that commercial. I totally respect what your doing. Good for you!

[xganzxalleinx] on 9/11/2009 6:55:13 PM

Wyntergrace is such a pretty name!!! Smile i'm not a veggie but i def. think lunches should b healthier!

hit.the.surfs. on 9/11/2009 6:42:29 PM

OMG i think that's great! Im a vegatarian too and it'd be awesome if my school would have more vegatarian options but we've tried talking to the, but its too "expensive" i bring my own, healthy, meatless lunch anyways

Check out my profile girls, and please leave a comment, thanks!

our school have vegetarian options....salads and veggie burgers

vana903 on 9/11/2009 5:03:08 PM

sweet!! its a really great idea starting a petition for healthier lunches! especially for my old school's sake. my old school had to greasiest, oldest, yuckiest, and unhealthiest lunches ever. i hardly bought my lunch there. i started packing my lunch everyday in teh eigth grade cuz i was grossed out by the lunches there. and that was the best move i ever made. its actually made me alot healthier.

angel365 on 9/11/2009 4:43:11 PM

Our school needs to have better and more healthier food. My mom doesnt even want me eating some of the things they serve so she gives my healthy things to take to school.

luckykel on 9/11/2009 4:23:18 PM

I'm in junior high this yeah, so I'm in a new school. I noticed that they deep-fry a lot of the foods. I think it's gross. I try to eat as healthy as I can when I'm at lunch.

TripleA*3 on 9/11/2009 3:58:37 PM

all of our schools have a vegetarian option everyday.. they're very plain, but at least there's something to eat..

Soccer*Sam on 9/11/2009 3:54:25 PM

Yay! I'm a vegetarian and fully agree to this. My school has vegetarian choices but they aren't healthy.
