I have been afraid of shots since I was a baby. Now, I'm older but five nurses have to hold me down while I get a shot. Can you give me some advice on how to control this phobia?
Unfortunately, the longer you wait to deal with a fear like this, the worse it'll probably get. So, think about when your next big shot is. Before you have to get it, prep yourself way in advance so that you'll feel less anxious. First off, DON'T LOOK! It'll totally freak you out if you can see the needle going into your skin. You should also see if you can drag your BFF, your mom or your BF into the shot room with ya to act as a hand-holder.
Another thing you can do is create an anxiety-free atmosphere right before you get your shot. What calms you down in a stressful sitch? Is it listening to your iPod? Calmly counting to ten? Squeezing your eyes shut and dreaming of an island vacay? Think of something that'll make you less nervous and apply that technique the next time the doc orders up a pincher.
If you give these tactics a try and they're still not working it might be time to talk to your 'rents about seeking professional help. No one should have to live their lives with such an intense fear. Good luck, girl. I know you can do it!

The same with my second older brother he hates too.He had five nurses to hold him down but now if he get a shot he don't like it at all. I hate shots also I'm 14 and I had to get a shot yesterday and I didn't like it at all. Just to let you know a advice to do is don't look at them when they do it. Hold onto the bench or where ever u on or close your eyes and imagiane of some thing owes.

Im the xact same way!!! i feel like such a baby when i get a shot cuz im 12 and i still cry, but i cry B4 the shot. The older i get, the worse it gets. for the H1N1, i tried to run out of the office!!! its so embarrasing. it doesnt even hurt that much!!!!!!!! its just the anticipation!!!

I am deathly afraid of shots. My mom, dad, and my younger brother think it's no big deal. But my brother is 8 and I'm 11. He doesn't cry when he gets shot and he didn't cry when they popped his bone in his arm back in place when he broke his arm. Ugh, and when I went to get the H1N1 shot, they couldn't give me and my brother the mist in your nose because we get ashtma (coughing and whhezing) when we're sick.

Think of it this way. There r kids out there dying of diseases because they didnt have the $ 2 get the shot to protect them. Be happy and grateful (that sounded stupid). So...yep. by the way im scared of needles 2. they dont hurt me though. go figure

in Feb. I had to get 4 shots in 1 day!As i was leaving I nearly fainted. Everything went all fuzzy and i had to sit down while my mom payed. I HATE shots. That was sooooo not a good day.

I kinda understand how you feel..I had to get the Swine Flu shot like a week ago and before hand I was sooo nervous! XD But just 1. Don't look 2. Breathe 3. Think of something nice and remember it will be over really soon! For me, the shot only hurt a little! I'm glad its over though! Good luck! =) XxX

I just look away when they give me the shot cause it probly wont hurt as bad so i dont see it going into my skin or anything it looks gross even when others have a shot i dont look

I was afraid to get my shots (im in Gr.6) but i got them and they dont actully hurt that much so dont be afraid be calm and it wont hurt as much. but it will hurt after a while but not a lot

i'm very faraid of needles and shots too. we're getting the H1N1 shot at school, where my mom won't be to be my hand-holder. i'm scared cuz even though i'm 15, i still need my mom to be with me when i get a shot. this is the first one ever where my mom won't be in the room with me. this'll be interesting......

There is nothing wrong with being afraid of shots! I totally am! The most important thing that I remember is that the shots are to make me feel GOOD, not BAD. So the next time you go to the doctor, hold your mom's hand and be thankful! good luck! ky

i hate shots too!!!! ugh! Also ive heard that if u relax ur arm (or leg) so that its just like hanging that it helps and u wont feel it. im not afraid of getting my blood drawn anymore as long as its a Childrens Mercy with the butterfly needles.. every six months since i was about 5.... then if i flunk it then it has to be done again at my local hostpital and they suck! i have a thyroid disease so thats why. but the good thing is i cant really die from it.. at least i dont think. :-p

I am 12 and i am afraid of shots so i don't look at the needle a i hold my moms hand and it helps me.

Hey chick, I'm deathly afraid of shots too!!!! One time I had an allergic reaction and my leg swelled up like the size of Jupiter. My mom is always in there with me when i get shots just to bring up a subject that will get my mind off of it. If you get nauseous easily eat something or drink something sweet before that shot so that you don't get dizzy or feel like your gonna pass out. Don't worry everyone is afraid of something. ~Morgan

omigosd i have the exact same thing!!!!! my whole family makes fun of me cuz im the oldest kid and the only one who cant sit and get the flu shot!!!!!!!! its super annoying

One day I went to a foot doctor and he was going to put one through my foot. I was so scared of him doing it so i kicked and screamed until he said he will do it another day.

Hey yah i no to i am getting my flu shot on friday and i am freaking out!!!! i cry every time and i have to hold my moms hand. my sis is 2 years younger and she is like what is wrong with u. It makes me feel really stupid

Girl I Know your pain. Once I was so scared I bit the nurse, my mom litteraly had to drag me into the office, and 4 nurses had to hold me down.... It wasn't pretty.

well i am terribly afraid of shots. last time i got one i cried a lot. then i got another one and instead of looking at the needle i read my book, twilight!!!!! Im not so afraid anymore.

Hey!!! Shots aren't that bad... I'm only 11 and the last time I really freaked out over a shot was when I was like 5 and I had a reason to.... they gave me like 6 in one day all on my leg... but it's not that bad... STOP OVER REACTING!!! The only thing at the doctors office I freak out over is the strep test.... especially cuz it either chokes me or gags me and I hate both!!! PEACE!ELLA!

If you don't look its fine, i am REALLY freaked out if i see a needle going into skin, but if you don't look, you don't even know it happens!! it doesn't feel like a thing

i've got to tell you... dont be afraid. okay because i just got my shots yesturday. and iyes you do get really scared but, once its done you dont have to be worried about getting the horrible dieases. and just to tell you it doesnt hurt either. what it feel like is a little pinch and a nudge to it. sooo, try getting your confidence up, and when you get your first needle. be excited not afraid. luv, misher<3 CHECK OUT MY PROFILE EVERYONE!(l)POST COMMENTS TOO

i hate the docs office because a lot of the times i have to give a urine sample instead. and the worst part is i have to actually spread my leggs apart in the office in front of my mom and my doc it is so disgusting

i used to be afraid of shots when i was like 5 or 6 and below. then after that, i wasn't as afraid anymore. but then, i watched a documentary on discovery channel about the world's smallest girl and she had to get a shot. the needle looked huge against her and when she got the shot she was crying hysterically. then i became afraid of shots once again and that was just like 3 weeks ago. i got my shot and it didn't hurt [that much] so im not afraid anymore

Aaawww...I hate shots too. They stink. but sometimes they are not as bad as you think. sometimes you over exagerate when sometimes it doesnt even hurt and its over in a second. But what you should know next time you get a shot is that remember that it will be over and its worth it. I mean wouldnt you like to know your protected from a disease rather then living in a world never knowing whats goign to happen to your health?

Hey babe, Shots suck, but they are also quick. It takes longer to rip off a Band-Aid then to get a slight prick in your arm. When you are getting the shots just try to relax and think about how quickly it will all be over. Also, look away from the nurse - that way you won't know exactly when they are going to stick you with the needle. xoxo Keltie
