Odd One Out

My school is really cliquey, like most high schools, and so it's not that easy to make friends. I have friends, great ones, but the problem is, I have NOTHING in common with them. I'm just there. I like shopping, they hate shopping. I like pop, they like rock/heavy metal (they're guys). I told some of my friends how I feel and my guy friend said I could just be the oddball of the group. My other friend, who's not so nice, said "Then why do you hang out with us?"

Now I'm depressed, which isn't so unusual. I don't want to leave my friends no matter how weird people call us/me. They're nice and funny, we just have nothing in common. Should I leave them for a new patch of friends, or what? I'm more preppy than "punky" like they are.

Cliques stink, but sometimes ya gotta deal with 'em. Don't let it bring you down though. You're a great gal no matter what all these cliquey peeps gotta say. And the fact that you realize that the whole clique thing is supersilly just shows how mature you are!

If you like your friends definitely stay with them. You must have SOMETHING in common with them to make you guys friends in the first place. Think about what attracted you to these buds. Do they make you laugh with their hilarious jokes? Are they totally easy to talk to when you've got a prob? Are they smart and do you guys have great convos?

If your friends make you happy then stick with them no matter how different you guys are. A little variety is great to spice things up. Would you really wanna hang out with a group where everyone was the same? No way! You need different friends—they give you different perspectives and views on stuff that people exactly like you wouldn't see.

If you want, you can try to reach out and make new friends who are more like you. Meet new buds with similar interests while keeping up with your old group. How to make some new pals? Talk to people in your classes who seem to like the same stuff you do—like shopping and pop rock. This way you'll be friends with lotsa different groups! It's always awesome to have a variety of friends.

So girl, don't stress. Just keep being yourself and you're gonna do great!

Ok there is this girl she lives on my street. She says she has a friend and that she is really awesome. so I finally met her. thought we could be BFFs in no time.I can be myself around her and EVERYTHING. Then the she gave me her cell phone # and we txt a LOT. But she is just so cool and untouchable and she is in a grade above us. How can I really be friends with her? Like going to the mall together friends and sleepover friends and insepreable friends without being clingy and stuff? HELP!

Hey girl! This girl might just be super busy, so ask her in advance if she would want to go shopping or somethin. Its good to give her some time to plan, if that doesn't work ask her what would work best for her schedule.

MOD MOD MODDDDDDDD ok, so since fourth grade me and my friends were like a little pod, me, c, cc, and k. k and c were pest friends, and me and cc were best friends. and it all worked out perfectly. but then a couple years later kk entered the group, and i like her, shes nice butttt...now my bff cc is bff's wit kk. and im totally left out! i hate not having a best friend that i spend all my time with! what do i do!

Hey girl! BFFs, especially girls, can be pretty tricky as you grow up. Just try to keep doing your thing. Be there for you girls as much as you can and try branching out and meeting some new gals!

1. okay, one of my best friends for 8 years now clings to me like a dog! every time i do something with other friends she follows me. i decided to join track with some different friends last year, and she joined too, even though she said she hated running. i joined a charity league with some other friends, she joined too, even though she never showed interest until i did. i took a new elective at school, she joined too. if i tell her about a show i like, she becomes obsessed with it, even though she could care less before. we are 10th graders in high school, and its so annoying. i have alot of different friends, some old and some new. when i try to branch out and try new activities, meet new people, or do anything, there she is with me. its high school, so everyone is trying to find themselves and follow their own passions. i want to be my own person and she is holding me back. what can i do? the thing is is that she is shy and not very confident. help please!
2. i heard from a friend just two days ago that my lab partner was saying really mean things about me to one of his friends. he is in other classes with me too. i dont know how to face him tommorow at school. i cant look at him the same and it really bothers me. i dont know how many of his friends he told. any advice???

Try distancing yourself by spending time with others and she'll get the message. The worst thing you can do is have a huge confrontation and hurt her feelings and your friendship. As for the second dilemma, you should check to make sure he said that! But if it's true, sure, ask him why he said it. Best, Miliana

Good advice. I know how ya feel. I am just there like you said. I don't fit in anywhere. I don't fit with the preppy girls, the smart dudes, the funny dudes, I just hang wherever I can. Mostly with the guys I've known since 1st grade, but now they are questioning why I am around them so much. Sigh, I wish I had a clone of myself.

At my middle school one of my best friends said I would be the odd one out if I did cheer cuz she said they are at the every bottom of the chain. I dont care about things like that but she does. I am not that the person every one would expect to be a cheer leader but it sounded fun and I always wanted to do it I just kept it in side! I ened up getting on the team and it is awesome!
The point is do what ever you think is right maybe you can have your guy friends and some new friends but dont be worried about the odd one out because its what ever makes you happy!

***************MODMODMODMODMOD******************** my second best friend (lets call her abigale) only joined our group at the beggining of the year. my guys friends werent so happy about it and they kinda still arent. 'abigale' is kinda annoying me and my other friends because she sometimes insults us. so basically no one in the group likes her. so should we kick her out (shes leaving at the end of the year) or should we keep her to make her happy for a year?

Hey girlie! That's really up to you. Abigale probably is just trying her best to fit in with you and your group. Give her some growing room and try to get along! It doesn't hurt to have another gal around to hang out with!

I have two questions.
1. My boyfriend made a deal with one of my friends that if she kissed her boyfriend, he'd have to kiss me. She kissed her boyfriend, and now my boyfriend is finding someplace private where we can kiss. I've never actually kissed a guy. All my friends say the first kiss is amazing. What was your first kiss like?
2. My BFF is having a birthday party soon, and her mom said she could only invite four people. So she invited the following people: Kayla, Hannah, Jocelynn, and Alex. I'm not bothered by the fact that I wasn't invited, but I'm bothered by who she DID invite. My BFF isn't even friends with Jocelynn or Alex. Kayla's friends with all of them, not friends with me. I feel like my BFF said she would invite Kayla, and then asked Kayla who else she should invite. How can I talk to my BFF without Kayla following, because Kayla never leaves my BFF alone and my BFF always seems to need to leave every two minutes when I call her. Help!

Why dont you join a club at school??? Or try to talk to some people in yout classes. Did a girl/boy make a good grade on a test?? Tell them good job, start out with small talk. Dont ditch you guy friends though, unless your not happy being with them. Hope I helped!!!!

Hey babe! Try an anti-friz cream or mousse at the drug store! They have anti-frizz creams for dry or wet hair!

k, so there is this girl who is kinda my friend, she basically just follows me everywhere. the prob it that i am usually silly around her, especially in gyym, wich i stink at. now she dosent belive that i am able to take anything seriously, and she thinks im a complete idiot. (for the record, my MCAS scores are waaay above average, im pulling down A's in every subject, can sing, act, and draw, and designed my 1st real dress when I was 6) i dont enjoy her company or value her as a friend, but avoiding her is out of the questoin because she is friends with my friends an is on my bus, but i DO NOT want to be within 10 feet of her.
