Bugged by mom's strict rules

My mom always has these really overprotective rules for me. I'm not allowed to date before I'm 16 and I can't walk around the mall JUST with my friends!

I've told her many times that I'm more responsible than she's giving me credit for, but she doesn't believe me.

And my dad is no help at all in this department. What can I do?

-My mom's rules bug me

Hey hon, allow me to introduce you to the beauty of compromise. You and your mom are never going to agree on every single little thing. Believe me, I'm 21 and my mom and I still don't see eye-to-eye on everything. Your mom, like my mom, only wants what's best for you even though it may seem at times like she's being overprotective. But, after all, she's your mama! Her JOB is to protect you.

Meet her half-way

But sometimes our mothers may overdo it, and this is when compromise comes in to play. Wanna walk around the mall? Have your friends over to your house one weekend so your mama can get to know them better. This will help her trust you and your friends.

And you're not allowed to date until you turn 16? What if you went out on a group date? Your mom may be more willing to let you go out with your crush with a group of your girlfriends she already knows. Just remember not to miss your curfew.

Heart your mama no matter what

When your mother sees how responsible and trustworthy you are, she'll be more likely to bend the rules every once in a while. But you have to earn (and keep!) her trust by following the rules at all times. In time, your madre will begin to see how grown-up you're getting. But you'll always be her baby. And, sometimes, that's not so bad. Best of luck, girly!

Lots of love,
L'Oreal

MOD MOD-My Mom Changed on Me. My mom used to be so strict when it came to friends, boys and watching certain movies and tv programs. And she used to be super strict about me using the internet. But she has done a total turn around on me and now sort of still watches what I do but lets me do so many things. And she has become very open about boys and other things. Any idea why she made such a change? I know my aunt was thinking she was to strict before and they talked, could that be part of it? I can do a lot of things and watch a lot of things that my friends cant, where before it was just the opposite.

Hey girl!  I think your aunt's talk with her could def have had an impact.  It may have helped your mom to realize how much more mature you are than she realized.  But if things are good between you two, don't sweat it.  Best, Kristen

My mom is overprotective too! But, whenever she tells me no, I usually see why, but I'm in denial. I couldn't spend the night on two occasions because she didn't want me to! So, yeah. Been there, and still doing it.
If you would, please check out my profile. Thanks!

my parents are super strict! i know they just wanna protect me, but i'm very responsible! i get all A's and listen to them. i just wish i had more freedom to go places w/ my friends, parties, sleepovers, and stuff like that. also, because they were born in a different country which had a different culture, they expect to CHOOSE who I marry. which means i'm NEVER allowed to date. if i try to talk to them about dating they'll think i'm gonnna rebel or something and get STRICTER. i'd have to date behind their backs and that's wrong. they're ruining my life! what should i do!

Omg that u sound just like me cuz my mom doesnt like one of my friends just cuz she is a little less mature than me and she thinks that all shes going to do is help and convince me to make bad dicisions. So i cant go to her house and she cant come to my house. i think another reason it that my friends mom is a little u no.... wacky so.... Me and my friend hang as much as we can at school but that doesnt seem like enough and i really want to have her over but i cant cuz my mom and dad r totally against it..

yeah it isnt that my parents dont trust me but it isn't always safe.

soccerbee683 on 10/2/2009 5:09:44 PM

my parents wont let me walk around with just my friends. but not because they dont trust me. teenagers and kids get kidnapped ALL the time at malls. did you know there are people who wait around in malls just waiting to kidnap people? i still want to be able to be more independent but i understand why they have the rules that they do.

yeparooni342 on 10/1/2009 10:30:22 PM

Hey chica
This used to be me, my mom would never let me go to friends houses, have a facebook, and make me babysit my brothers basically everyweekend!
This has changed drastically for me, since last year (eighth grade) I have completely matured in every possible way, and that makes parents proud!
I'm serious!!

MODDDDD.
Okay, so I've been playing basketball since 6th grade and I'm in ninth grade now. I'm doing cheerleading right now, and my coach is also the winter-guard coach; today she told me I should join winter guard when it comes around. I actually want to do it, too! Today I told my mom that I wanted to do Winter Guard and she flat out said "No, you're doing basketball. You can't get a scholarship for cheerleading or winter guard," then she basically said they're both a waste of time.
This makes me mad because I should get to choose, it's my life! I don't even want to do basketball

Hey babe, this sounds like a tough sitch. Try explaining to your mom why it is you want to do winter guard and what it is that appeals to you. If you're persistent and mature in talking to her, she should come around...just give her a little time and maybe have your coach talk to her if she agrees to it.

Mod, My moms leaving for iraq soon and i'm wooried. She's gone for a year and i haven't told anyone, i can't find myself too. How can i survive the year because after that year my mom wants to move overseas again? thanks(:

Hey babe, that sounds like a really tough sitch. Try to talk to your mom as much as possible before she goes about how you're feeling. I'm sure she's feeling a little anxious about leaving you as well. Opening up to a school counselor is a good idea because when your mom leaves, the counselor will still be around to listen when you need to talk.

Hey girlie! This has happened with me too. What you can do is show your mom that you're responsible: do your chores before you're asked, finish your homework, make sure to be hanging out with a respectable crowd, and maybe she'll be a little more lenient! xo

annagurl on 9/29/2009 4:07:26 PM

okay i wanna talk to my mom about the whole dating thing, but the truth is im scared.....I try to but she looks at me like i have done something wronge when i try to bring it up.....I wanna have my BGF (best guy friend) over...but my mom said once that he could come over if she watchs us..But he is not from here he lives in a town NOT far from here...and she is like how do you know him...he is my best friends cousin..and we meet and have been friends for months... im afraid to bring it up again..i dont know WHAT she will say this time..(I'm a teenager) dont you think it would be okay if i have guy friends over.... HELP (SORRY SO LONG)

Hey babe,

Once you have an open conversation with her, you'll be able to get all these things sorted out. It might be awkward to get the conversation started but this will be a great chance for you to figure out what her rules are and if you can make a few compromises with her to maybe get a chance to have some guy friends over.

This is exactly how my dad is! I can't date until I'm 16 and can't go anywhere with friends until I'm 16. I can't comprimize with him because he won't listen! Grrrrr!

whitesparrow23 on 9/28/2009 3:36:29 PM

Im not allowed 2 date till im 16 either and i hate that rule but if ur mom knows she can trust u then maybe she'll let u date!

wow i just noticed how awsome my mom is. im 12 btw, and she lets me fly on an airplane by myself to spend the break at a reletives house. she lets me take a taxi to go shopping by myself. she gave me a cellphone since i was in 3rd grade. and she drives me to my BGF's house just to chill out.

Mod!! I'm a freshman in high school and I joined the marching band. We had a pep rally friday for homecoming and the whole percussion section had face paint on. The older guys were pressuring me to put it on, but I didn't want them to, even when they tried to get some on me. The thing is, I won't give in to peer pressure, but the section leader knows my brother since they are in the same grade, and I don't want something like this to happen to me again. How can I stand up to them if this does happen again? I kept saying no and walked away from them, but it didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hey missy, since you already made it obvious, that you weren't going to give in to them, and they continued pressuring you, you may have to tell the band leader. Sometimes bullies will only stop if a higher authority makes them.

the mall thing is retarded. I think she shuld give u more freedom there...and for the BF thing...i have almost the same rule..it is kinda normal these days. But good advice. Hey chek my profile out! Smile Smile

blondechica21 on 9/27/2009 12:44:37 PM

MOD
What should I do? One of my close friends who is my age and always comes to our sleep overs and who I always hang out with just found out that she may be pregnant. My mom really likes her and has even told me how happy she is that she is my friend. But now I am so afraid what my mom will do if she finds out she is pregnant if its true. I think my mom will just become extremely strict with me. Do you think my mom will just accept it or will she maybe put extremely strict rules on me and tell me to stop hanging around with her?

Hey girl, I hope that your mom does something in between and tries to help your friend out. But worry about that when it comes and for now be there for your friend because chances are she's very scared right now and needs your support. I hope this all works out. Best, Miliana

MOD MOD MOD!!!
Omg! This is a lot like my mom, except my mom is way more strict then that. I'm not allowed to wear makeup until i'm 16 or date until i'm 16, and I'm not allowed to have a cell phone until I'm 16, and even then it has to be a track phone. I'm probably the most responsible out of all my friends that can have those things, but she doesn't care! And even worse, my brother is allowed to have a cell phone and she pays for it, and he's allowed to date and he's only 13! How is this fair in any way? What can I do? there is no compromising... and I'd hate to have to sneak around behind her back.

Talk to your mom. Bring up the point about your brother and how its unfair that he's allowed to date but you arn't. Be respectful and let your mom know exactly how you feel. You need to be respectful of her though and listen to her opinions. Good luck girly! xoxo kerra

HEY, MOD I need advice:
My best friend's mom is super over-protective and won't let her eat off campus at lunch, but when I go out, of course I always bring her something back. But she really wants to go out, and always having to pay for her (she doesn't get an allowence) is starting to cost a lot. What can she say to her mom to convinnce her that she's responsible enough(because she is!)?

She should talk to her mom and let her know how she feels. If she has a responsible conversation with her mom about how she feels and what she wants to do then her mom should listen. Good luck! xoxo kerra

**MOD**
So, my crush asked me to homecoming. Yay, right? Not right. I told him I wasn't sure if I was going to homecoming, but if I decide to go, then yeah, I'll go with him. But I've decided I don't want to go (I'm a new kid and don't know that many people, and I've never been a big dance person anyway). The decision to not go has nothing to do with him, so how do I tell him this without hurting his feelings?

I suggest you tell him exactly what you just told me. Let him know that youre not very into big dances and that since youre new you don't know a lot of people so going to homecoming is not your thing. Just make sure he knows that if you did like dances you would have loved to have gone with him. Also don't completely give up on the idea of going, because there's a first time for everything girly. Good luck! xoxo kerra
