The Problem is Me!

So scared to speak in class

I have a problem and it's controlling my life. I get panic attacks at school when I get called on to read out loud. I can barely talk when the teacher calls on me. I can hardly breathe.

I'm embarrassed about the whole situation. Ever since it happened once, I get a panic attack every time I get called on because I'm scared I'll have another and embarrass myself. It's making me nervous to come to school each day. Help me, please!

Hey girl, sorry to hear that you're going through this. Reading out loud is already nerve-racking enough without having to worry about panic attacks, so I can only imagine how stressed you must be. When I was younger, I hated being called on or reading out loud. I would always get way nervous and mess up when I read, so you’re def not alone. But the good news is that you can change that.

Why so shy?

If it’s gotten bad enough that you don’t even want to go to school, it's time to take charge. First, you gotta figure out why you're so afraid to pipe up in class. Are you extremely shy? Feel like you're gonna trip over your words? Relax! You're a great, smart chica just the way you are. And remember, everyone makes mistakes. Who cares if you pronounce a president's name wrong? It'll be OK and if anyone thinks you're stupid, they're just immature. You learn by making blunders, so don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

Get set to start talkin'

Now you need to get comfy with talking in class. Practice reading out loud, slowly and carefully when you're alone in your room. An added bonus about reading to yourself? Since you're taking in the material in a different way, you'll really focus on what you're learning and get in extra study time.

You can also start off by reading in classes where you feel more comfy. Getting straight A's in English? Raise your hand and read a passage from Jane Eyre. Got a BFF in one of your classes? Just knowing she's near will ease your fears.

Focus on your faves

Also, try to think about the things in school that you love instead of worrying about embarrassing yourself. If you can’t wait to hang with your gal pals at lunch or you just LOVE that amazing art class, look forward to stuff like that! Everyone embarrasses themselves, and everyone makes mistakes. It’s part of being human. And nerves just make it more likely to happen. So when you get to class, and before you have to read out loud, take a deep breath and just relax.

Hey girls! I just wanted to say something quick about being a vegetarian: a vegetarian eats NO meat whatsoever. People say, "I eat fish, but I'm a vegetarian." "I eat some steaks every once in a while, but I'm a vegetarian still." A vegetarian eats no animal flesh whatsoever. I am a pescitarian (fish, no poultry, no red meat). a lacto-ovo-tarian is one who eats no fish, poultry or red meat, but does eat dairy, eggs, fruits, veggies, etc. There are also lactotarians, ovotarians, fruitarians (these don't even eat veggies), vegans, and more categories for vegetarians. I know this has nothing to do with the above article, but I want you all to see it anyway. Also, I'm a vegetarian because I think it is cruel to raise animals for THE PURPOSE of killing them. I understand that in the food chain, we are supposed to eat other animals. But are we supposed to buy them, fatten them, shoot them, and then sell pieces of them on display at grocery stores, and then eat them? Think about that. I also don't eat red meat or poultry for health reasons. Vegetarians (non meat eaters and yes I know I am a pescitarian, not a vegetarian) tend to live longer, be slimmer and have less diseases. Fish have great nutrients in them, however, and I do not think that eating fish every once in a while will make me fatter, more disease prone or die sooner. Sorry for the rambling comment. Go pescitarian!!!

i'm like this when i have to play trumpet in front of my wind ensemble class. and it stinks because i'm shaking, and you can really tell because the noise is REALLY shakyyy. it stinks ): i hope i'll be able to get over it, 'cause i'll have to play in front of the class a lot!

That happens to me. I am VERY VERY VERY shy. You have to get comfortable with your surroundings, and nobody there is gonna eat your face. ;) So dont be scared.

I know a girl at my school who never talks; even when teaches call on her she looks down and ignores them. People including me think she's terribly rude for never answering, but maybe she has the same problem.

Okay, well I'm in ninth grade. I have been friends, no best friends with this girl (lets call her shelby) since 2nd grade- seven years. We have always been close, we tell each other EVERYTHING and last year we were basically glued at our hips; we never left eAchother's side. But this year is a milli times different!!! We still are always talking and still tell each other everything, but we don't have every class together like last year so I feel like I'm missing out on inside jokes and stuff. Another thing is my really good friend from when I was, like five or four goes to our school now and I feel like I don't had time for her anymore. I feel like I have matured a lot more than her and she hasnt at all. Another factor that plays in to this sitch is, I want to hang out with more people and flirt A LOT with guys, she was voted biggest flirt last year but never does anymore. So I am chilling with other people and sittig with them at lunch but she's not.
I guess Im just confuzzled and need a bunch of advice.

sorry I didn't answer this before! I didn't see the "Mod" part. It's normal for people to grow out of friendships because everybody changes over time and not everyone changes in the same direction. If you're worried about losing your current bff, make time to hang out with her outside of school and make your own inside jokes.

Hey girl, when it comes to something like Facebook and one parent's saying okay and the other is not, you should be able to make your own decision. Your mom may be using the Facebook account to start trouble so my suggestion is this: use it when you're with her, but when you're with your dad, don't. Find a compromise point and by means don't feel obligated to add your 'rents as friends on the site. Good luck!

Hey girl, when it comes to Rosie, it may just be she's acting that way because she doesn't feel like she's part of hte group. Maybe pick out necklaces and make-up together and get ready on the big night so she won't feel left out borrowing her mom's dress when you've all got new ones. As for your other prob, I know it may be hard, but you've gotta let Kyle go. It stinks when a guy leads you on and totes doesn't mean it, but it isn't Lauren's fault he's acting the way he is. If you act, talk to Kyle about it -- maybe play around a bit and get some info. What's been going on? Does he have feelings for Lauren? Put your own feelings aside and find out. REmember, it's all about being a good friend ... to both of them. And Liz? Be accepting of her. Yeah, she may be a little eccentric, but she just needs a friend. Be polite but don't be afraid to draw the line. You don't need to do everything with her, but you do need to treat her like a friend and not a foe. Hope these help!

Mod mod MOD I have a problem. My friend K really likes this guy A. I'm sort of friends with A and my other friend is really god friends with him. I know he doesn't like her. At all. H always tells me how much he hates her and how annoying she is. It really bothers me. I don't know what to say or how to defend her. MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD !!!!!! my friend today said my moms racist and i hate that girl sometimes she calls me fat or puts me down other times shell be nice but last year i told her who i like and she didnt care but i clled dibs on him and she dinied it but she always does that shell do somthing bad to us and them well bring it up and shell forget !!!!! i want to stop beig her frend and so does my bff but my bff just wont branch away!!!!!!

That's harsh, but your friend might not have meant to call your mom racist and that's just how it came across. I don't think she's intentionally hurting you, but if she did mean to call your mom racist and is continuously putting you down you definitely need to confront her and stand up for yourself because you deserve better in a friend. A friend is someone who should be there for you and support you and make you feel good about yourself. Try not to get between her and your BFF because you might not want to be friends with one girl, but you also don't want to lose your BFF in the process.

Hey babe,

Sending one email won't make you a stalker. Just write him a short note saying hi. Try and be a bit flirty. Talk to him about things he's interested in or sports he plays or things you did on the weekend. If you're friends already than you should have lots to talk about. If not, play coy and write it in a way that he'll have to respond!
