Sleepover Fun

Classic Cinema Night

So here’s the sitch: it’s Friday night but you’re low on cash. Your friends are dying to see a movie but after watching Twilight 20-plus times, you want something a li’l different. Well, no fear, girlie. Instead of going to the movie theater and paying that ticket price to see all the new releases, round up the girls at home and rent a classic movie from back in the day.

These six flicks are timeless classics that are bound to make your evening a blast! Pop some popcorn and break out the PJs.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961): Before Blair Waldorf was crowned queen of the Upper East Side, there was Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn). Effortless, classy, and ultra-independent, Miss Golightly meets her match when new-to-the-city writer Paul Varjack (George Peppard) moves in the flat above her and falls for her. Set in New York City, this film is all about friendships, parties, wealth, and finding that right guy (and yourself) in the process.

Make it a double feature! Get your Audrey Hepburn fill with another classic, Roman Holiday (1953). Set in gorgeous Italy, the film features Audrey Hepburn in her first leading role as Princess Ann, a royal doing a press-tour of Europe. Sick of the palace life, she ditches the crown for a day among the locals—led by charming, American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck, grandfather of 10 Things I Hate About You’s Ethan Peck) of course!

Casablanca (1942): The ultimate romantic classic, Casablanca is the story of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a rough-around-the-edges American running a nightspot in Casablanca, Africa, as people move in and out to escape to America during World War II. Things are going smoothly—that is, until he runs into his former love, Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman). With two tickets out that everyone wants, Rick must make the ultimate decision with everything at stake.

Make it a double feature! Go back to the South with Gone With the Wind (1939). Starring Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara, the film tells the story of the Southern belle as she faces the Civil War and its aftermath—all while going for the Mr. Wrongs and batting heads with the Mr. Right, Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), in the process!

Some Like It Hot (1959): Go for a laugh with the Marilyn Monroe comedy Some Like It Hot. Two struggling musicians are on the run when they witness a crime and have to pose as an all-girl band to keep the villains off their tail. The prob? They both fall for two dazzling ladies while having to keep up their disguise, one of the two the lovely Miss Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) who dreams of wealth and yachts.

Make it a double feature! Get musical with Marilyn Monroe’s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) a story about two singers and best friends who dream of making it to Paris. Working on a cruise line, they sing and meet plenty of suitors including their Prince Charmings along the way—but will their friendship stay?

MOD MOD MOD! plz answer, why is it that in a group of friends people are'nt treated equally? for exmaple if i did something wrong or said something wrong even as a joke it's always magnified but if a "popular" person in the group did something even worse it wouldn't be a big deal? i'm lke the unimportant person who no one really cares whether i'm invited to go somewhere or told something? what makes people favor other people even in a group of "friends" so sorry this is so long

Hey girl! That's a really good question. Sometimes people in a group may be scared of another one or desperate for their approval and react the way you described. Speak up, chick. Make yourself heard!

Actually, Breakfast at Tiffany's came out in 1961, not 1959. Just wanted to point the mistake out.

Hey girl, thanks. I just checked and verified, but I'll forward that.

MOD MOD MOD!!!-
Hi so I'm having a spa sleepover b-day party in a couple of weeks. I have all the recipes I'm going to use for face scrubs, masks, manicures and pedicures; I even have 2 crafts (make your own lipgloss and make your own bubble bath) that we'll do. I have all my ingredients but I just don't know what kinda decor to get. When I say decor I mean what color plastic tablecloths and napkins for dinner I should get lol Smile cuz I think I'll skip the balloons and banners (it is a spa party so I want more of a relaxing vibe; less of a lets party kinda thing lol) this year. Also I was thinking about getting candles, idk if I'll wanna light them, but it would be nice if they have scents and again have a nice color. So what do you think my color scheme should be? And are there any other decors that would fit my theme? Movies, music? Also my most important question is should we put on make-up after all the spa treatments? I'd yes but I re-thought it a little, do you think that it would ruin all the pampering we've just done to our skin putting on make-up? Cuz all the make-up I have isn't like expensive quality stuff; it's the Claires stuff, and idk how good quality it is. Plus I'm just gonna want to take it off before I settle down incase I fall asleep, what do you think? Sorry for attacking you with questions lolz but I want to have fun and stick my theme! Thanx so much!!! Smile

Hey girl! I think some of the most relaxing colors are that pretty light blue and chocolate brown... those are great. Or you could do something girly like pink and purple. Do some fun chick flicks like 13 going on 30, How to lose a guy in 10 days, mean girls- those types of movies are always a hit. And I would suggest not putting makeup on after all that pampering you did to your skin. Have fun!

You could read a magazine or a book! Or try drawing, making jewelry, crafts, etc!

I left a comment a few days ago about my opinion on Gone With The Wind and I think it got deleted . . . so I'm just going to restate: I think it's a good movie, but I object to Rhett Butler being called "Mr. Right" when he is an abusive husband. I think that's sending a bad message – unintentionally, of course. I love you, GL, but I think you've got to rethink calling Rhett Mr. Right.

thanks! great advice by the way!
also I have a friend prob-my friend (her name is sarah) is an only child so she is used to getting her way. it is really annoying how she always wants me and my other friend (anna-louise A-L for short) to do what she wants to do. also, sarah and A-L were bffs last year, so sarah is always excluding me on purpose sometimes. like for instance when her dad drives me and A-L home, sarah will volunteer me to be dropped off 1st. and she also braggs about how they "have the same dreams" and stuff like that. it really hurts. A-L is really nice and she's really modest and tries to include everyone. sarah said we were going to be a "3-some" this year, but I'm feeling left out. any advice?
thank you!

Well if its such an issue, i suggest you tell them how youre feeling. If you explain all your feelings about all the issues in a truthful, respectful, and nice way then things should get better. Good luck! xoxo kerra

~~~MOD~~~ I have to run a mile in p.e. on the track field. I honestly have no problem physically running it! But I get so out of breath around the half mile. How can I control my breathing so I can make my running easier? Thank you!
Everyone has some trouble with their breath. You should breath deeply and keep it steady as you run. But you'll probably eventually run out of breath. Don't stress about it. It happens to everyone. xoxo kerra
MOD~ Sorry I've already asked this question a few times but I want an opinion from a few of the different mods. Okay I'm planning on being a mardi gra girl for Halloween and I know I need a mask and beads but I've looked at IParty, Jokers Wirl, Target and Walmart and none of them have the perfect mask I want. Do you know of any other stores they might be at? Also what should I wear for the actual clothing in the costume? Thanks so much for your help and taking your time to help the all of the girls out here at girls life. Thanks so much!
Hey girl!  For your costume, throw on a cute dress.  A lot of mardi gras costumes are floor length, costumey dresses, but if you're not into that, get a sweet short dress with a slightly puffy skirt.  If you can't find a mask you like, try decorating your own.  Find a plain mask with the right shape at one of the stores you've looked at or at a local craft store, buy some glitter glue and rhinestones, and get to work!  This can be a way fun craft, and you'll get your mask to look exactly the way you want it.  Have fun! ~Kristen
MOD~~~ hey sorry for re-posting this but i don't think it worked last time i tried to post it. so there's this guy i like and he's in almost all of my classes so we talk a little but never full convos. so anyway I was just wondering how I can spark a convo without it being weird and random if ya know what I'm saying. can you help me out? thanks so much! thanks for the great advice! Smile -ashley27
Hey chica, start conversations on things he's interested in. If he's a sports fan, ask him about last night's game. If he's really into music, ask him about his fave musicians. If you have no idea what he's interested in, begin a convo about his shirt or his hair. Ask him about his hobbies or plans for the weekend. Just talk about things, you would want someone to ask you about. Smile
-_-_-Mod-_-_- hi so I like this guy and we've talked a little (but never full-convos) and we've known eachother since 3rd grade (we were in diff classes tho). anywayz so i've "broken the ice" already but idk how to start a casual convo (or what to talk about! eek!) and i don't want to come off as too flirty b/c if things dont work out he'd make a great potential bgf. can you help me out? thak you so much! you guys rock! p.s. thanks for giving such great advice Smile God Bless! ~ashley
Hey chicky, start a conversation about things he's interested in. For example, if he's a sports guy, ask him about last night's game. If he's really into music, ask him who his fave musicians are. And if you don't about things he like, begin a convo about him. Ask him where he got his shirt or ask about his plans for the weekend. Just think about things you would want to talk about. The key is to be yourself. Be calm, confident and natural. If you do that, I'm sure he'll be interested in you! Smile
Hey babe,
You should definitely talk to an adult about this. If you think your parents won't help, talk to a teacher or a counselor at your school or another adult you trust.
I'm a huge Audrey Hepburn fan! I even have a movie poster from Breakfast at Tiffany"s in my room! Great ideas!
westcoastchick on 10/16/2009 7:59:53 PM
We have never watched any classic movies but maybe we should. Some of the movie we have watched lately either havent been that good or have been kind of inappro for our age.
luckykel on 10/16/2009 6:33:01 PM
i hav watched gone with the wind before. its so good! the other movies, i hav heard of but never watched. i might watch casablanca. i think that its great that people are watching classic movies i really want to watch the outsiders, based on the book.
Um, I think you might've forgotten the best movie of all time. Does "Romeo and Juliet" ring a bell? I mean, it's amazing. Well, the 1968 version is... No wait... Help! by the beatles is the best... so hilarious. Oh, I don't know!
I have seen Casablanca (hated it, so boring) Roman Holiday (good movie!) and Gone with the wind (really good movie!)
cupcake*cutie on 10/16/2009 4:50:19 PM
i LOVE LOVE Audrey Hepburn SOOO much!! i've seen both those movies and love them, especially Roman Holiday (and i love Gregory Peck, i did know that his grandson is on 10 things i hate about you) my big sister is dressing up as Holly Golightly for Halloween, she's in college, and when she studied abroad in Rome, Italy they had a bunch of stuff like calendars, t-shirts, magnets and etc with pictures from Roman Holiday. i've not seen Casablanca, but we have it and i want to,and i'd love to see Gone With the Wind. i've not seen Some Like it Hot, but i like Marilyn Monroe also, and when I was in San Diego last novemnber, i saw the building from where some of it took place, but we didn't go on it, i also have not seen Gentlemen Prefer blondes, but i'd like to. as you can see i'm very old fasioned and like classic stuff and dislike Twilight greatly
ann-a-babe on 10/16/2009 4:15:56 PM
Cool, people should be more exposed to older classics! Not just Twilight and that stuff. Grrrrrrrrrr... so annoyed by Twilight!
I NEED HELP. I want to be Tinkerbelle for Halloween, but I am not rich and can't go out and buy an ACTUAL Tinkerbelle comstume. I was thinking a green dress with white leggings, wings, and pulling the top secrion of my hair back and curling it. Maybee with a tiara. But I don't have a lot of that. And, what shoes would I wear? It's suppose to be cold. Please help. I want to look good, but I dont wanna freeze. THX
Hey girl,
You can def pull off a fab Tinkerbelle costume for less! Check out Wal-Mart, Target, or even your local thrift store to get these items for less! Grab a pair of leggings or tights, and wear layers for extra warmth! Visit a craft store and make your own wings!
