Spotty Period Protection

My flow is really irregular and I can never tell. It gets really light in the middle of my cycle, so I switch to just a liner, but then it will get regular again and I leak. What’s the deal and how can I make sure I’m using the right protection at the right time?

Hey girlie,

This is a completely normal experience and most girls experience spotty cycles when they first start their periods. Your body is adjusting to menstruation and this process can take a couple years to regulate.

The most likely cause for the heavy to light back to heavy flow is that your hormones are fluctuating throughout your cycle, causing the heavier bleeding. There’s really no way to control how heavy or light your period is, but there are ways of protecting yourself against leaks.

Since you know that your period becomes light and then heavy again, don’t switch to liners. Even though it might be more comfortable to just wear a liner, wearing a regular pad will protect you from embarrassing leaks.

If you absolutely must wear a liner, check the flow of your period every few hours and make sure you are carrying regular pads in case your flow turns heavy again. Tampons are also a good way of preventing leaks and may be more comfortable to wear when you don’t know if your period is going to be heavy or light.

omg I've had mine 4 like 2 years (I'm 14) and mine is a little spotty... like I usually have the first 2 days heavy, then I skip a day, then it's just a little heavy, then heavy again, then it goes light. It's so unpredictable! Is this normal for even ppl with their periods for a while??

Hey chica, that could be a warning to your bod that your period is coming. Whenever your period is near, your bod goes through changes. Like tendernes in your breast, mood swings or lots of discharge. But no worries, you're fine.

Hey missy, yep get your sis to translate for you. That way you're mom can help you. Maybe you can try to teach your mom to speak English. Start by helping her pronounce small words and expressions like "Hello and Goodbye" and "How are you?" Hope this helps!

Yup you'll feel your period. You may get cramps or headaches. Some girls vomit, others get tired and some have food cravings. But if you keep a good diet and exercise, the side effects won't be quite as bad. Having medicine handy helps a lot too.

Hey girl, I know it may be hard, but you've gotta let your mom get better. Your mom isn't doing too well so be considerate. Try asking a friend for pads but do help your mother heal now. You can get those pads anytime.

Hey girl, that def sounds like discharge. Spotting is when you might find something a 'lil red in your panties -- that typically happens right before your period and is a sure sign you should be wearing a pantyliner or pad. Right now though? Your period could be days away, or it could be months. It's hard to say, but that's def one of the signs you're on track for it.

Hey babe, it could just be hormones but I would just focus on keeping a routine exercise schedule and eat 5 small meals a day. Talk to your doc for the best plan for you, though.

I've had my period for over year i've been trying tampons FOREVER. I have gone through one box just trying to get one in. I stay relaxed and i've read the directions a lot of times so i know how to put it in. Do you think they're something not letting it get in, or do I have to try more? (I'm really active so I really need to use a tampon!)

Hey girl, practice makes perfect with tampons, so read the directions again, ask your mom even for a little extra advice, and then go for it. You'll get it right and from there, it's smooth sailing.
