Me and one of our yummy Halloween cupcakes. (GL candy bin not pictured.)
Hey girlies! My name is Liz and I’m an intern here at Girls' Life. I’m a born-and-raised Baltimore native and love everything about the city—especially the fact that the magazine I read as a teenager is 15 minutes from where I live.
I knew I wanted to intern at GL ever since I decided to pursue publishing, so landing this internship was one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.
Scary witches AND Santa Claus?!
I’ve been reading this mag since before I can even remember, and I've always loved writing, too. GL is such a great place to work because I produce pieces on all different topics. The past few weeks I’ve been focused on Halloween, Thanksgiving AND Christmas. I know what you’re thinking. You can totally understand Halloween (YAY! It's in less than two weeks), but um, Thanksgiving and Christmas...already?! I sound just like the stores that set up Christmas decorations in July (isn’t that irritating?). But, I’m really not! I'm focused on all three holidays 'cause I write for Girlslife.com, as well as the print magazine. Since working for the web means producing content for the holidays that are happening right now (Psst! Check out my Halloween posts HERE and HERE!), and working for the mag means working far in advance, a.k.a. thinking 'bout turkey, snow and mistletoe—in October. So, I'm thinking of three different holidays...all at once!
All of this holiday talk has really gotten me in a great mood. I feel totally prepped for Halloween after thinking up all the cool web content. And I can’t wait 'til it's time to sing along to "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells", sit by a fire, decorate a Christmas tree, set up outside lights...OK, enough. I keep forgetting it’s ONLY October. On the VERY plus side, thinking about Christmas in October has made me get a head start on thinking about prezzies this year. And let me tell you girlies, our December/January issue is chock full of all sorts of GREAT holiday ideas.
Pourin' over past holiday issues—and thinking up ideas for our new Dec/Jan!
Not just makin' merry
So what else do I do around GL besides get into the spirit of any and every holiday? I’m one of the mods, and I love it. Besides writing, my other favorite thing to do is help people. Whether it’s at a shelter or giving advice, I always feel happy when I know I’ve helped someone out. So don’t be afraid to ask a question. The mods love giving advice!
My (secret) favorite part of the job is being surrounded by clothes, shoes, purses and makeup. Seen Confessions of A Shopaholic? I’m not quite that bad, but I do go shopping at least once a week. The GL office is just bursting with dozens of shoes, hundreds of nail polish bottles and a rack full of clothes, which makes me wanna shop even more. And I've got some pretty good holiday outfit ideas lined up just by looking at the stuff around the office.
Writing lots of fun articles, helping out at fashion shoots, organizing clothes, brainstorming cool new ideas and giving advice are just a few of the things I do at GL. I also have fun, learn how a magazine operates and up my style-savvy every day. My internship at GL has been the best job experience I’ve had thus far and will def be something I remember forever.
