GL's Halloween Hitlist: Spooky Reads

Lookin’ for some bone-chilling books to keep you up at night? Forget word-of-mouth spooky stories. We’ve compiled a list of our top six thrilling reads (thanks to your help!). Check these off your list if you dare. But, be forewarned, sleeping with a nightlight for the next week might not be a bad idea…

Nightwood by Patricia Windsor

Three buds ditch a school trip to D.C. for a week’s getaway at a lakeside cabin. Soon after their arrival, though, things begin to go horribly wrong.

Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn

Molly and Michael aren’t thrilled with their mom’s new marriage—and their creepy new stepsister, Heather, too. After the family moves to an old house in the country, Heather starts talking about her invisible friend Helen. But Helen is no ordinary pal. She’s the ghost of a girl who once lived in the house.

Wringer by Jerry Spinelli

Palmer LaRue doesn’t want to turn 10. Ten means he’ll have to become a “wringer” and strangle pigeons wounded during his town’s annual pigeon shoot. Will he accept the task or finally find the courage to say no?

Cathy’s Book by Sean Stewart & Jordan Weisman

Life isn’t so hot for 17-year-old Cathy, but when her BF Victor suddenly breaks up with her, things get a lot worse. She goes to Victor’s house the following day to get answers, only to find that he’s disappeared. Will Cathy be able to find Victor and discover the truth?

Safe House by Meg Cabot

Jess Mastriani was on vacation when cheerleader Amber went MIA. Then another cheerleader goes missing in the small town. No one knows about Jess’s psychic abilities, but FBI agents suspect she has a supernatural ability since she’s always helping them with cases. Will Jess be able to keep her secret safe while helping to find the missing girls?

Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

The Lutz family decides to move into a new, luxurious house in Long Island, New York. But a year ago, Ronald DeFeo murdered his parents, brothers and sisters in the home. The property and price was a steal, so the Lutz family didn’t think anything of it. They’ve lived in the house for twenty-eight days before fleeing in terror…but why?

Which chilling books will you be checking out? Blog about it, babes.

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!
I need to get my friend a good book for her birthday. She's 12 but an advanced reader for her age. Her mom does not want her to read topics too ummm... inaproriate for her. She loves to read from the teen section in the library. HELP!

Hey girl! Hmm... this is difficult. Does she have twilight? Does she like mysteries like Nancy Drew? Ask her what her fave type of book is and then look around. If you really are at a loss for what book to get her, buy her a gift card that way she can pick a book out herself.

Some really good books are the

-Percy Jackson series. They are all about a pre-teen/teenager (depending on which book in the series you're reading) who discovers he is a son of Posideon, a greek god, and in the Big Three.
They consist of five books:
Book one: The Lightning Thief
Book two: The Sea of Monsters
Book Three: The Titans Curse
Book Four: The Battle of the Labyrinth
and;
Book Five: The Last Olypian

Another good series is the May Bird series.... cosisting of three books:

Maybird: And the Ever After
Maybird: ~I forget but I have it somewhere in my house~
Maybird: Warrior Princess (lol)

Club_Paramore on 10/18/2009 8:15:46 PM

OOoooo, Wait Till Helen Comes is such a good book!!! I used to read Mary Downing Hahn's books all the time, I've pretty much read all the ones my scholl library had, lol. They're kinda too easy for me now tho, but I reread some of them occassionaly. Bliss my Lauren Myracle is a good book, plus it's scary AND disturbing( which are too different things, beleive me). I love scary stories, lol, and don't really care that much when they make it hard to sleep at night, lol.

alyssa_candy_adler on 10/18/2009 5:26:19 PM

I've read Wait Til Helen Comes and Wringer- both were good.

Also, just want to clear up an error with Wait Til Helen Comes- it says Helen is the ghost of a girl who lives in the house, but that's not right- he lived nearby, but haunts the cemetary by the house

linnybug12 on 10/18/2009 4:58:36 PM

MOD MOD MOD Okay so in two weeks we are going to have a Halloween dance (29th) and we just thought of the idea today and we are going to say something about it at a business meeting for student council on thursday (22nd) is it to late to plan one???

It could be a little late! Try asking people in your class if they already have plans for the weekend of the 29th...if most people seem free the dance will probably be a success!

YOU WROTE IT

It was a strange scent, faintly familiar, like the perfume my mother used to wear. The aroma lingered around me, smelling like dried sunflowers and a soft touch of the new spring air.
