IN THE NEWS: Cheerleading more dangerous than football

With all the glitter and pom poms, cheerleading doesn’t look that dangerous. But recently, life-changing injuries in the high-flying sport have been making the headlines. Broken necks, fractured spines and sprained bones have resulted in comas, paralysis and death.

An article in the Baltimore Sun explained how emergency room statistics show the dangers of cheerleading, with more than 30,000 hospital visits coming from injured cheerleaders.

A test done by Fox Sports proved that when flyers (aka, the girls that get thrown in the air) fall, they feel an impact of 2,000 pounds. NFL linebackers (those 250 pound, gigantic men) only hit at a force of 1,800 pounds (and they’ve caused some serious damage to other football players).

The dangers of the sport come not only from the physical difficulties, but also inexperienced coaches. Middle and high school cheer coaches are often untrained teachers who know little about the sport.

Like any sport, in cheerleading it’s important to be physically capable and knowledgeable about the stunts you might perform. If you don’t feel comfortable doing something, talk to your coach and don’t do it. Part of feeling secure is knowing that your teammates are capable as well as your coach. If they aren’t, remember it’s not worth the risk of life paralysis or death.

Yeah last year I was considered a cheerleader... 5th grade...we didn't have an actual team but we practiced at recess and I was only on it since I'm very tall and strong so this other girl and I were the girls that throw them in the air and then they point their toe and we catch them you know and it was fun cuz we only dropped one of them once but it wasn't really a drop.. We cuaght her right when she touched the ground.. luckily! But we were really good until we had a big fight and we stopped.... oh well it was fun!

space_fan on 10/19/2009 10:18:50 PM

I've only been cheering for 2 years now. Anyone got any tips, cause im OK but I really want to make the basketball squad this year. Im like cheer obsessed HORIBBLY!!!! I went home and cried for 2 days straight when i didn't make it last year

space_fan on 10/19/2009 10:12:57 PM

i was a flyer, and i have been in a really dangerous situation. i was going up into a full lib (which is when the people onto the bottem "bases" and "back" hold you uo in the air with their arms extended, and you hold your leg up). i was then supposed to do a twist down (which is when you jump out of your stunt, twisting in the air, and they catch you). but, they dropped me. they originaly caught me, but the bases were really weak, and dropped me right after their arms touched my side. i am now afraid of flying with those bases.

rebeckagrl21 on 10/19/2009 10:02:51 PM

I am a cheerleader and loveee it! Have been for 8 years!!! Flyer is the best!!!

Comment on my profile cheer girlies! And it is a sport and takes alot of hard work Just as much as any other sport!

kaylanlexi on 10/19/2009 9:47:26 PM

im a cheerleader and like most people i find it really annoying when people say its not a sport and its so easy. well its harder than it looks and it hurts really badly to fall. my friend thinkks that cheerleading is the hardest sport and people laugh when they hear that but it is extrmely hard. you have to be tight and one mistake and make you tumble to the ground. not funn and not all cheerleaders are dumb. im a striaght A studentt.

crazedbabee11 on 10/19/2009 9:22:31 PM

oh, about smudge98's comment, it is hard! well sorta haha. and it IS dangerous too. also, we're not dumb. u have to get a C or above in order to participate in any sport as a matter of fact. people wo find out im a cheerleader are so surprised (im not that pretty, im kinda smart, and im weird lol!) haha i remember my old crush was like "(this dude) told me ur a cheerleader" and im like "what???" (the dude was on the football team haha)

CAMEL490 on 10/19/2009 9:16:50 PM

oh ya, we were cradling and the other base threw r flyer ON me and she like sat on my face. and then one other time, someone let go during a stunt and we all fell and.... r flyer sat on my face.... other than injuries, cheerleading is FUN!

CAMEL490 on 10/19/2009 9:13:32 PM

Cheerleading is a sport, it just depends on the team. Im captain and its super annoying how ppl go Are you a cheerleader(when im IN my uniform?!) and imall ya... and they reply with Ready, OK! or Give me a B!! Its really annoying and dumb because its not that easy. And half the people that made fun of me last year, tried out this year. Also i know how it feels like to fall, but maaan ima profesional faller i hate when people are all OMG and stuff....god they need to shut there mouth cuz that puts pressuer

bellaiscool on 10/19/2009 9:10:09 PM

i am cheerleader.

littlemiss139 on 10/19/2009 9:07:41 PM

its so scary but its cool wat they do!

Magifina98 on 10/19/2009 8:47:08 PM

haha, well i shouldn't be laughing, i've heard that i don't completely beleive it, but it's probably because the cheerleaders at my small school barely do anything like that AT ALL. and i don't consider cheerleading a sport at all either. but thats just me

ann-a-babe on 10/19/2009 7:09:36 PM

and that is why i prefer basketball.

coffeeforever445 on 10/19/2009 6:49:00 PM

ahhhemm.... i (no offense at ALL) dont like cheerleading. nothing against CHEARLEADERS. i play foot ball on a boys team and umm.. i find our cheerleaders REALLY annoying when we are trying to play . like id ratyher sack a person on the cheer squad than the QB

football playa 4eva! on 10/19/2009 6:18:38 PM

wow that is so scary, i am a gymnast and i have gotten alot of injuries from that.

potterfreak11 on 10/19/2009 6:13:17 PM

I'm not a cheerleader, but i do agree
that cheerleading is a sport!
It's like acrobatics, but w/ team spirit!
So, yeah, it's totally a sport.

=D =D =D

sleuthgirl101 on 10/19/2009 4:44:34 PM

i am a cheerleader and i take offense to the stereotype of cheerleaders. not all cheerleaders are snobby, dating the head football player, most popular girl in school, or a slut. maybe some are but not all. think about it are there people at your school who are like that but are not cheerleaders? i take offense when people say cheerleading is not a sport. what if i start saying all soccer players are stupid people and its not a real sport how could you even consider it to be. it makes me so angry when someone says oh your a cheerleader i hate cheerleaders when they dont even know me. i am a really nice person and that bothers me. its not right to jusge someone by thier grades, race, sports, hobbies, or wardrobe. i think everyone needs to realize that cheerleaders are people too and that it is a sport. and sorry this was so long but thanks for reading this!

tootsie-roll on 10/19/2009 4:23:56 PM

I am a cheerleading captain and I was a flyer. So I personally know what it feels like to be dropped and I hurts very much. My bases just watched me fall and other people tried to catch me but it didnt work. SO cheerleading is very dangerous.
Comment on my profile!!!!

indigogirl1 on 10/19/2009 4:14:26 PM

I agree with smudge98. I'm a cheerleader to0. I'm a all star cheerleader which is team of cheerleaders compete rather than cheering for teams. I don't like when people say it's easy and not a sport. Can they do a roundoff backhandspring backhandspring full. I sure can't. I almost have my backhandspring. I never let my grades slip lies than a 90.

exreme cheerleader24 on 10/19/2009 4:10:12 PM

I wanted to join cheerleading, but i was to late to join the squad and now i kinda don't want to... sounds to dangerous. Frown

band girl on 10/19/2009 3:57:24 PM

I used to be a cheerleader, and I was a flyer. I got dropped a few times, and it was so scary. My sister is also a flyer, and she gets thrown like 20 feet in the air. I knew many girls who have needed surgeries due to cheering. Cheering should definatley be given more credit than it is, because it is one of the most dangerous sports out there.

hello x beautiful 94 on 10/19/2009 3:54:23 PM

hi im a cheerleader and it's one of the most dangerous and hard sports in the world, but no one believes that because every one thinks we're just snobby, populaur girls who wear skimpy outfits and not do anything but say "ra! ra! siscomba!" because all of the movies they see. the mnovies and tv shows they see get them to believe that all cheerleaders are popular, dumb, mean, snobby people but we're not. does it make sense that if you join a certain sport you suddenly become mean, become the most populaur girl at school, and start loosing IQ point? it just doesnt make sense. dont believe any of those stereotypes. b.t.w.- most cheerleaders have an average (for grades in school) of B or above! and all the cheerleaders i know are loving and, well, cheerful! sorry this comment is so long, but i also want to introduce you guys to all star cheerleading, the type of cheering i do. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Star_cheerleading#All-Star_cheerleading
cheering is super dangerous not just because of the stunting but also because of the tumbling (what gymnasts do). remember- if cheerleading was safe & easy it would be called football. Smile

smudge98 on 10/19/2009 3:33:49 PM

We aren't allowed doing stunts, and no body can really tumble and if they can, they have been doing it lots, so there are fewer injuries at my school, but still some, as with any sport.

lilgirlyme on 10/19/2009 3:13:42 PM

wow i didn't even think cheerleader was a sport, wow i thought football would be wayyyy more dangerous.

karatejenn on 10/19/2009 3:11:51 PM

YOU WROTE IT

It was a strange scent, faintly familiar, like the perfume my mother used to wear. The aroma lingered around me, smelling like dried sunflowers and a soft touch of the new spring air.
