GL's Halloween Hitlist: Frightening Flicks

Gather a group of your girls, pop some popcorn, turn the lights down low and get ready to scream! We’ve put together a list of our top ten most frightening flicks for Halloween. Make sure you check with your ‘rents first, some of these picks are major scares and rated R.

1408: PG-13
1408? Nope not the year, the room number! This spooky story follows author Mike Enslin, who writes horror tales based on his investigations of haunted houses. He receives a mysterious letter to visit the Dolphin Hotel in NYC, home to the creepy “room 1408.” Check me out of that hotel, please!

Lost Boys: R
Totally lovin’ Twilight? This flick is sure to be up your alley! Lost Boys is about two young teens from Arizona who move to California to fight a gang of vampires. Too bad Edward Cullen isn’t there to swoop in and save the day!

Sweeney Todd: R
Two words: Johnny. Depp. Nope, this time he’s not Captain Jack Sparrow, he’s Sweeney Todd. Sweeney Todd is a barber who murders his wealthy customers by slitting their throats. After stealing all of their goods, he has their bodies baked into meat pies. Yum? I don’t know about you, but after this movie, I won’t be getting a haircut anytime soon, or eating pie!

Beetlejuice: PG
Don’t want to be totally shakin’ in your boots? This one is a great pick! Beetlejuice is a comedy horror film about a young couple who recently died and have returned to haunt their old house. When a new couple from the city moves in, you can guess what happens!

The Haunting (1993): PG-13
The Haunting is about an investigation of the paranormal aka things that happen with totally no explanation! The characters visit an old mansion hoping to come into contact with ghosts and are drawn in by the forces of the house! Creeeepy.

One Missed Call: PG-13
Wouldn’t it be erie to check your voice mail and find there is a message from the future you? In this terrifying tale, the characters receive voice mails from their future selves that include the date, time and details of their death!

The Grudge, PG-13
An American nurse living and working in Japan is exposed to a supernatural curse. She is overcome with a powerful rage and spreads her curse to other victims. Steer clear!

Prom Night, PG-13
Prom is supposed to be the best night of your life, right? Not for Donna! Brittany Snow plays a high school student who thought she was safe from her past. A killer who has escaped from prison is after Donna and her friends - a night of magic turns into a night of murder. So much for the perfect dress, Donna has bigger things to deal with!

When a Stranger Calls, PG-13
Off to a routine night of babysitting, Jill Johnson thought she was in for a few relaxing hours of TV time.  When she starts to get phone-calls from a strange caller asking “have you checked the children?” she starts to realize that this night is anything but routine!

The Ring: PG-13
After viewing a certain videotape, strange things seem to happen to the viewers. Nightmares, nosebleeds and more! Within a week of seeing it, the viewers simply die. Um, scary! A journalist investigates the mystery behind the tape but stumbles upon problems of her own.

1408- pretty scary, but also annoying how he CAN'T get out, and a little weird.

The Grudge- Not that scary. But a good movie.

When a strager calls- scary and a good one

The Ring- my favorite scary movie ev. It is scary and has a great story line. I love it. I showed it at a sleepover and everyone was freaked out but luved it.

bubblegum4 on 11/2/2009 9:43:32 PM

So many of my friends are into scary movies and we have watched a few at our sleepovers but I am really not into them.

I have seen the Friday the 13th movies on dvd and one called Hostel but I cant remember if it was 1 or 2 but it was so scary and nasty in parts.

MOD Trick Or Treating/ Halloween Is in 18 hours. My Costume Idea Was To Either Dress In My Usual Gothic Attire or Dress As One Of Four Of My Fave Book Characters. I Originally Wanted To Be Damien Maslin The Gay Vampyre In The House Of Night Series But I Need Tips On How To Compress My Boobs So I Can Actually Pull Of The Gay Guy Look. My Other Opt was to be Max From The Maximum Ride Series But I Look Nothing Like Her. I Also Liked The Opt Of Being Bella Swan From "Twilight" But I Have No Clothing That Looks Like Hers. Can You Please Help?!?!? I Need To Decide QUICKK!!!!!

Hey missy, I like the Max from the Maximum Ride series idea. And you don't look exactly like her, as long as your costume does.

i hate scary movies they freak me out!! i'm such a chicken. MOD MOD MOD halloween is coming up fast and i need to figure out a costume! i was thinking of being Harry Potter but i have no idea what to wear for it. do you have any ideas? thanks!

Hey girl!  To dress up as the beloved HP, wear black pants with a gray sweater over a button up collar shirt.  Wrap yourself in a gold and red scarf and a black coat or capelet.  Draw on a lightning bolt on your forehead, add a pair of round glasses with tape on the bridge, and you're ready to go.  Have fun! best, Kristen

Wow, that is a pretty good slection of movies. I really do recomend The Ring to people who like movies like that. Beetlejuice and Prom Night are my all time faves.

NeverShoutLizzie on 10/25/2009 5:29:19 PM

MOD!!! I have dark sun-tanned skin and for spirit week i need to have pale skin.(tv / movie day I'm going as Abby from NCIS if you've seen it) I don't have time to go shopping for white powder at halloween stores. Is there any at home ways to get pale skin? thanks!

Hey girl!  There aren'y really any ways to get paler skin.  But if you're going as Abby, the signature hair with her make up and lab coat will still totally get the costume across.  Don't worry about your skin color.  Best, Kristen

Kristen Y.

Which horror movies are the best ones to watch on Halloween that aren't rated R?

allstargirl on 10/25/2009 2:50:19 PM

This is a great list of movies:
It gives a lot of variety and some are scarier and some aren't as scary. I've seen a lot of scary movies and most are kind of dumb.... but these aren't actually that dumb!
Happy Halloween!

I'm 12, but in 7th grade and my parents would want to watch with me, but then they probably wouldn't let me watch. They won't even let me watch Sleepy Hallow yet!

Okay so Halloween is next week and my friends and i decided we want to go trick or treating and then later on "trick or treating" with our friends but I don't really have a costume and money in our house is VERY scarce. I'm talking living on food stamps scarce and never being able to afford to pay for anything.....Do u have any ideas on how to make a costume.....Something maybe thats not too hard but it maybe looks like i put a lot of time into it cuz last year i made a five minute costume that was a dog that looked like i made it in five minutes i mean i wasn't embarrassed but this year i sort of want a high quality one.....Any ideas on how to make like a fairy and like a whole bunch of other ones please?? I need some feedback, anybody can answer.....And comment on my profile if u want and answer it there.....Any feedback is greatly appreciated.....
-Kaili

Try dressing up as a girl from the 80s or something like that because youll look super cute and can just grab some stuff from your mom's closet. Best,
Miliana B.

I LOVE horror movies!!!
But I think all 10 wasn't scary Smile

superstar_girlxoxo on 10/25/2009 9:27:27 AM

i LOVE horror movies and my parents are cool so they let me watch anything i want. 99% of the horror movies i've watched was by myself in my house and night. the ring and 1408 is kinda dumb and not scary at all. the LAMEST horror movie of all times is the exorcist. its so lame that i find it hilarious. the grudge is pretty good and its kinda scary, and i can imitate the woman's noise lol. the eye is also not scary at all. the SCARIEST movie ive watched is Quarantine, its about these people locked up in a building with zombies. ive just watched zombieland yesterday and its HILARIOUS.

jecca_12 on 10/25/2009 6:55:39 AM

Definitely play up the gold in your outfit with some shimmery eye shadow and eye liner. Best,

Miliana B.
