IN THE NEWS: "D" is for Deficient

Attention all health-conscious girlies! The Boston Globe recently reported that 1 in 5 kids aren’t getting enough vitamin D.

Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, which bulks up your bones and teeth. The deficiency is especially problematic for girls, as we are already at a higher risk for weak bones than boys.

Drinking milk and eating fish like salmon and tuna can help increase your vitamin D. Ten to fifteen minutes of sunshine a day helps, too!

I take vitamin D supplements every day so that I always get the right amount, even if it's freezing and I don't want to go outside, or if I don't get enough in the day.

Hey babe, no you're not gonna die. Try adding chocolate syrup or stick with other dairy low-fat cheeses.

GO VEGETARIAN! For more info, request it at my profile Smile
Save the animals, be healthy, and stop global warming by going vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for a year and 5 months. What is it? A vegetarian is when your diet contains no meat. How does it save animals? It obviously helps to stop the slautering of animals such as cows and chicken. How can you eat them when they are so cute (they are your friends). How does it improve your health? It cuts out lots of fat and chlosteral and you won't be overweight and you will have a healthy heart!Plus, reduces your chance of diseases and cancer. How does it stop global warming? Lots of energy is used in meat factories and butchering. The factory also creates pollution. It also kills trees so there is room for farms that kill animals for profit. Please help and go to petakids.com or my profile! Thanks for reading this! -Aubrey

mod****** what can i do for cardio in the winter. where i live it's usually too cold to go outside and i don't have a treadmill or jumprope or anything. so what can i do?

Hey girlie,

Try jumping jacks. Or invest in a jump rope. They're pretty cheap and they probably sell them at Walmart.

My dad read something like this and now we all take Vitamin D capsules.

There's really no reason to feel guilty, since it's just a practice. If you really don't feel well, people would have thought less of you if you DID go with all the stuff about H1N1, but you stayed home and nobody else got sick. You're not letting anyone down, you're doing what's best for you and everyone else.

I'm allergic to milk BUT I'm not calcium deficient or whatever it's called Tong.

My friend just went to the doctor and she is getting an operation next month because she has a vitamin D deficiency. She never eats the right foods, like she always has healthy stuff at lunch but eats twinkies and stuff and throws the other stuff away. She has broken one arm in the same place twice. Vitamin D deficiency is not a good thing!!!

Harmony & Melody on 10/26/2009 2:34:13 PM

I probably don't get enough vitamin D, well I'm not too sure but it's just a guess. I do not like fish, it's never really appealed to me. I don't really like the smell, although I like to go fishing and I'm capable of filleting a fish. (Which let me tell you is quite gross!) I could get vitamin D from the sun, if it actually decided to show more than once a month... It's been raining for at least 2 weeks!

MOD~~
Today is the last volleyball practice of the season. We're just doing a skills test to see if we improved over the season. Well I woke up with a bad stomachache this morning, so I stayed home from school, and I won't be going to the last volleyball practice. I feel sooo guilty about it! I feel like I'm bailing out on the team by not going to the last practice, even though I'm sick and I have a legitimate reason. I just need somebody's opinion, do you think I have a reason to feel guilty, and do you think my teammates will think less of me? And how can I get over it, because it's really making me feel really bad! Thanks.
