My Friend Might Be Anorexic

My friend thinks she has to lose weight. She doesn't! One day she came to school and said she only ate 100 calories and drank water the day before. That was all she had. I told her about anorexia last year, and she got mad.

I told her again this year, she listened, but I don't think it got through to her. She comes to school and if she forgot to eat the day before and lost a pound or two, she'll be happy. She wants to become a model, and I'm afraid she will do anything to become one.

    -Paramore Fan

Hey Paramore Fan,

Your friend is lucky to have such a great pal like you who cares so much about her. Unfortunately, you can’t do everything by yourself. I understand your desire to help your friend, but unless she truly wants to fix this, she’s not going to listen to you. Try explaining your concern. Tell her that you’re worried about her and you just want her to be healthy. If she still doesn’t listen to you, tell an adult you trust. You shouldn’t have to deal with this alone.

Anorexia is a very serious health issue. It’s entirely possible that your friend may be suffering from an eating disorder. Anorexia can not only cause you to lose an unhealthy amount of weight, but it can also cause serious health problems like losing your hair. Anorexia can also cause problems sleeping, sudden muscle cramps and constipation. A lot of times, losing weight makes people feel in control and powerful. Maybe your friend should try channeling this energy into something constructive, like an after-school activity or sports team. It’s perfectly fine to diet and exercise, as long as you do it the right way!

If this problem continues, then your friend will need to get help. Sure, she wants to be a model, but no one is going to hire a girl who looks like a skeleton! There is nothing wrong with being skinny, as long as you’re healthy!

Ciao,
L’Oreal

MODMODMODMODMODMOD I am worried about my friend. She doesnt eat breakfast, or lunch and i don't think she eats a lot of dinner. she doesn't really drink water, and when she does eat, it's gum or one cookie. she is already super skinny naturally, but she doesn't eat. Also it's affecting other friends, they follow her like puppies, so when she brags about how she doesnt eat, i see them cut down slowly on food at lunch!! How can i help her see that she might hurt herself?

Hey girl, it's good to notice that this is not normal behavior. It sounds like a eating disorder unhealthy behavior. It's important that this girl get help and seek out a guidance counselor or trusted adult because eating disorders are dangerous and deadly.  They are negative and self destructive. It's important to view food as a necessity! Our bodies need it to function at their bests! Not eating means No energy, bad moods, and bingeing later on.  Try talking to an adult about the issue so they can take care of it.

I have anorexia (but im eating normally again cuz ive gotten counseling and a meal plan). i think the reason that i became anorexic was because i was slightly overweight when i started eating less. then after i lost the excess weight, i just felt that i still wasnt skinny enough. so i started restricting what i ate, exercising a lot, and i just wasnt very happy anymore.
but im better now, and i even have a boyfriend! we havent been going out for a long time, but he makes me feel beautiful and that my life is worth living.

strawberrysmiles on 1/15/2010 11:11:32 PM

earlier this year i was submitted to the hospital for having an eating disorder. it was really hard at first, and i thought that they were just trying to make me fat. but i realize now that they helped me to see that i am beautiful, and they were helping me become better so i wouldnt die.
i have a friend who might be anorexic. she never eats anything at lunch, and says that, besides dinner with her family, she only eats a yogurt or two. im really worried about her.
she hasnt really gotten noticeably skinnier, but shes ALWAYS cold and wearing a sweatshirt, when im wearing short-sleeves and too hot!
last year before i was admitted, i was always cold. i am seeing so much in her that used to be me. im so scared for her.

strawberrysmiles on 12/14/2009 5:44:37 PM

That's scary, I'm sorry about your friend..

[xganzxalleinx] on 12/12/2009 3:36:56 PM

Ok the diseases such as bullimia and anorexia suck. I wish they had never been invented! Seriously I read all the comments on this page, and more than half of them are about girls that Gl's bloggers have known that have had anorexia. If ou know some one who has it, try to help them but if you can't tell an adult. I know this sounds dumb but you could end up saving their life.

Also, there is nothing wrong with being skinny as long as you're healthy. I myself don't usually get snacks, unless they're healthy, and I don't get seconds either. When i get dessert it's like a WeightWatchers mini 100 calorie cake or something. So there. Some girls just don't eat much. Smile

MOD
One of my best friends is turning into just WEIRD. Ever since she got her first boyfriend she has been flirting with almost every boy! She has tryed to steal my boyfriend from me! And now for lunch & recess she hangs out with only boys. Me & my friend Sam just see her giggling, twisting her hair, talking, be all weird from her normal self. But what makes that worse is that she has a BF! I kinda feel bad for him. What do I do about her? She just turning.... Yuck.

Hey babe, sounds like she's going through an odd time right now so talk to her one-on-one to see what's going on. Let her know you're there for her and be there to listen. Tell her what you think has been going on but don't accuse her of flirting, rather see what's going on with her.

It's great that she has a friend like you who cares about her! I'd keep talking to her. Hopefully she'll realize that what she's doing isn't good.

MOD MOD MOD ( and girls comment on profile ) My friend said that when she grew up she wanted to be rich and famous so she can go shopping a lot and she said " I can't live without a lot of money" and i told her that talking like that sounded slightly stuck up and what about the starving children in Africa and she was like " well i'll be rich so i can help them and go shopping in New York" This kind of made me mad because i was thinking about everyone less fortunate and how other people worry about much worse things than being rich and famous. Am i not being a good friend? It just seems like she should be aiming for better than being rich and famous and that she's not thinking about being a really good person who makes a difference who just is maybe not rich. Sorry so long this just has been bothering me. I want the best for my friend and this just made me kinda mad. Thanks.

Hey girl, it's great that you're aware and thinking about those who are less fortunate in the world!  As for your friend, it sounds like she's just not thinking about all of these issues.  It's true that there is a lot more to life than being rich and famous, but if that's what she wants, then that's alright for her.  Though you may not want to do that, you have to respect your differences.  And the truth is, as she gets older, she'll probably realize what you already have.  Even though you may not agree with her goals, it is her life, and you have to respect that.  best, Kristen

vana903 on 10/29/2009 6:58:55 PM

mod! my friend is kinda like that but different. sh eats a little of her lunch and claims to eat a huge snack when she gets home but whenever im at her house she doesnt eat that much. whenever any1 offers her food (even chocalate!) she says no. she is SUPER SKINNY and says she wants 2 gain weight but if that were true wouldnt she eat more?plez help me

Hey girl! She might be trying but some girls just don't get too hungry. Appetities differ especially when girls are growing and changing. If her weight starts to change quickly, then you can worry about doing something.

My best friend had a friend in elementary school who hardly ever ate so my BFF thinks she might be anorexic. But my BFF's friend doesn't go to our middle school so there's no way we could know.

giraffesrock on 10/28/2009 8:21:23 PM

hey omg my friend is anorexic but shes recovering. it is really sad. these kids in her school were makin fun of her and so that led her to stop eating. she would throw these tantrums by throwing chairs and food at her friends and family...including me. so please never make fun of someone about weight. it just might lead them to anorexia.

I have a friend who just joined the basketball team, but her dad is having a hard time affording it. She's so concerned about the fact that her dad that can't really afford the team that she stopped buying lunch at school, so she doesn't eat lunch. It makes me mad because ever since she stopped eating lunch, her grades have gotten worse, she's more tired and she can't pay attention. I've told her about the free lunch program but she's convinced that she doesn't need it. What should I do? Thanks!!

Hey babe,

If you can, try to share you lunch with her, or you and all your friends can each give her something from your lunch to eat, at least until she gets this basketball thing sorted out. Maybe she could trying bringing a lunch to school instead of skipping.

GO VEGETARIAN! For more info, request it at my profile Smile
Save the animals, be healthy, and stop global warming by going vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for a year and 5 months. What is it? A vegetarian is when your diet contains no meat. How does it save animals? It obviously helps to stop the slautering of animals such as cows and chicken. How can you eat them when they are so cute (they are your friends). How does it improve your health? It cuts out lots of fat and chlosteral and you won't be overweight and you will have a healthy heart!Plus, reduces your chance of diseases and cancer. How does it stop global warming? Lots of energy is used in meat factories and butchering. The factory also creates pollution. It also kills trees so there is room for farms that kill animals for profit. Please help and go to petakids.com or my profile! Thanks for reading this! -Aubrey

glamgirlteen on 10/28/2009 7:01:43 PM

This is scary... and an old friend of mine (she doesnt like me anymore) has recently reduced her eating to... well like a water and 100 cal. granola bar for lunch or nothing at all. Even though we're not really friends anymore i'm worried. She's a cheerleader and probably wants to be flyer so bad she's starving herself. She wasn't big AT ALL to start with! Her waist is shrinking and she's so weak now.
