The Problem is Me!

Diff Music Taste

I enjoy listening to metal and hard rock music such as Mushroomhead, Drowning Pool, Buckcherry, All That Remains, and such, but my mom and dad absolutely can't stand it! I feel like I'll get in trouble if I start playing the heavier songs on my docking system while they're home.

I want to listen to my own music, but I just don't feel comfortable doing it around my parents. How can I feel OK listening to the kind of music I like?

Hey li'l rocker, it can be way hard sometimes to enjoy your music when your 'rents move to the beat of a different drum. The thing to know about music is that everyone's taste is unique. You shouldn't feel guilty or uncomfortable if your parents don't share your taste in tunes.

Listen to what you like, with respect

That said, I know first-hand what it's like to hear the music of someone whose taste is sooo not the same. My sister would blare her screamo music every day after school while I'd try to do homework, and for a Beatles-lovin' chica like me, it was torture. I learned to tune it out, but my 'ents? Not so much. They demanded she wear earphones.

The best thing about earphones is that you can enjoy your fave soundtrack while everyone else around you can enjoy his or hers. And the
times you want to play your fave bands out loud? Just ask mom and pops if it's OK and keep the volume low. You never know: maybe mom and dad will end up liking one of your fave jams.

Tune into other tastes, too

They may be your parents, but don't be afraid to explore new music together. Your mom and dad lived through some of the best metal and hard rock—The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Def Leppard, you name it—and they might have some sweet picks. Even cooler? Ask mama and papa to bust out their old records for some insight into their tunes. If you end up liking some of their oldies you can bust 'em out on road trips. Sing along, anyone?

Know in the end, your style is your own. Your music taste is going to change a lot. Take my sis for example: her screamo days? Long gone. She's all folk now and shares her fave picks with my parents and even me. She's even influenced what I listen to! I'm indie-pop and some of her picks (Belle and Sebastian and Sondre Lerche!) are on the top of my playlist. When it comes to music, there are tons of hidden gems different people know. Share your fave hits with your 'rents and don't be afraid to take some of theirs too. You never know what you'll dig. And when you're not loving the same songs?  Well, earphones and keeping the volume low works, too.

Infinite xoxo's,
Alyssa

i sorta have the same problem. i like lily allen and the veronicas, but some of their songs are really inappropriate. i would NEVER use any of the bad language they use but i still like their music. my parents dont know i listen to them either. how can i let my parents know i want to buy their CDs? btw the cds have parental warning stickers and im 11.

Hey girl! Usually these kind of songs have edited versions.  Check Best Buy or Itunes and search for edited versions of your favorite songs! These versions will just skip over the inappropriate word.

Just tell them thatz the type of music that you can have fun with and gives you energy and lets have fun and it iz something that un love

coolgirl43 on 12/23/2009 11:00:42 AM

I'm all indie/pop/alternative, and one of my fav bands is all swearing. My 'rents hate it, i have a sister who got me into it, and I love it. I don't care about the swearing--it's just music and it's not like I'm going to swear like that anytime soon; I don't swear at all! I wear earbuds, or put it on low. Or, If 'rents are out, blast it up! What I'm saying is, don't let your 'rents choices put you off; you're not them! Listen to it, enjoy yourself, respect your 'rents, peace out Smile

I LOVE my music (Screamo, metal exc) and I just let my rents get over my deathy music (also my friends

I THINK YOU SHOULD LISEN TO IT JUST 2 BUG THEM

(im a reble)

CRAZY_98 on 11/17/2009 10:28:21 PM

Truthfully, I strongly dislike that kind of music. Believe it or not, certain types of music can lead to different paths. Good, or bad. Heavy Metal is just mad people screaming. Honest, they're mad. They're mad at life or SOMETHING. Why do you think they scream? One thing... "screaming" is not "singing" and its not very good music. You should check out other music, have a wider selection. Answer one question for me- Why do you like it? Now, I'm not trying to judge you with this questions, but I do want to know. =]

Anyhow, you should have the right to like whatever you want! Your parents are in charge of you, so be respectful to them, and try not to turn the music up loud, try to just not get on their nerves. =]

FrenchMani<3 on 11/13/2009 10:54:47 PM

haha. that happens to me. I love death metal, 80's, and alternative. wen my rents r home i bust out the 80's and alternative. but as soon as im alone the death metal comes out.
hehe. suicide scilence rox my sox!!!!!!

eagle on 11/12/2009 5:08:43 PM

MOD!!!!!!lol i loooove classic rock and 80's music and my favorite bands are Queen and Aerosmith because my parents influenced me into it, but my friends? they think im crazy!!! i wish if they could at least listen to one song, they'd realize it's pretty awesome. i've even given in to listenin to modern songs for them. i'd wish my friends would stop being so hard-headed and at least try it

Eventually your friends will realize that your music taste is pretty great, but just give it time. In the meantime, rock on! Best,

Ok, so i am so confused.
I am constantly on the verge of tears everyday. people ask me whats wrong a lot? and usually i am the positive happy girl that everyone is laughing with. and duhh im not moping around. i am having fun and stuff. but it seems like nothing is right. i know like im not going through anything completely hard. i mean i have had hard things in the past like just in august but i dont htink its cuz of that. and i dont know what to do. i just cry in my room. my period just ended but i honestly dont think its because of that!? WHATS WRONG WITH ME????
help!

Hey girl, it's hard to say but it def could be hormones. Talk to your 'rents about this because it could be serious. Know your feelings aren't your fault. It's so important you not put the blame on yourself and fight this battle with other people. This is not one to take alone.

MOD
This is really embarassing, but I hate shopping for bras!!!! I'm a 34a and my mom always makes me buy sport bras. and anytime I find a nice, colorful one i like, she makes my buy a boring white training bra and it makes me feel horrble. How can I convince my mom that I can shop for my own underwear???......wow that sounds wierd Laughing lol. Thanks mods!!!

Hey girl! Tell her how your feeling even though it might embarrass you. She will appreciate your honesty and will realize you really want to get something fun and colorful because white makes you feel horrible. Your mom def won't want to make you feel horrible.

I know one guitarist... but he's in a BAND alredy!
HELP? PLEASE?

Hey babe, try talking to local music instructors or the music teacher and ask for help. Also, going to any nearby music store is a great place to start. Ask your parents for help!

MOD Okay, I have a paper due in 2 days. It is a literary analysis, and I'm struggling. This is because I just got a new english teacher, and the old one just made us do this, except it was more like a reader response. Only, for that essay I wrote it like a literary analysis ( no book summary, saying how and why the author did this, the high's and weak points0,mainly focusing on foreshadowing. So I was wondering if you think that if I tweaked my essay, using it as the basis of my new essay would be a bad thing. Kind of the same thing but different, instead of just writing a new essay? I even with the teacher's help I'm not getting anywhere.

Hey girl! You really shouldn't recycle papers. You can use the same concepts but try re-writing the ideas to make it an original paper !

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD There is this guy I liked, but not a great amount, at the beginning of the year. Today he complimented my shirt, yelled at anyone who was being mean to me, helped me move my desk, helped me get a chair to that desk, and he asked my best guy friend for my phone number. What is up?

Hey girl! He might like you a little! He also could just like hanging out around you. Keep talking to him and try flirting a little. See what happens!

hey mod
i kinda have this problem too, i listen to rock and some rap. my dad can get me songs for free on my ipod and whenever i tell him to get me a song he listens to it first and tells me its too inapropriate and refuses to put it on! then i have to pay for it if i really want it. what do i do there?

Hey babe,

There isn't much. Talk to your dad and tell him that even if he doesn't get you the song you are going to get it anyway (but do it in a nice way). Tell him you like the beat and not the lyrics. Try and work those puppy eyes!

ya, my parents don't excactly like what i listen to either. i'll come home and blast nine inch nails or primus but my parents manage to ignore it... i do listen to some of the stuff they like though such as the who, pink floyd, metallica. it's not always the heavy stuff that i listen to though that makes me nervous it's just that lots of it is really innapropiate(spelling??). but i still listen to it anyway when i'm around them.....
