Tressed Out

Four Tricks for Amazing Winter Hair

Winter weather can be frightful, but your hair can still look amazing (hey, it’s party season!).

We’ve got tips to keep your locks fab, even when the weather is frigid.

Goodbye hat head, hello glossy strands!

Here's our four ways to great winter hair...

Avoid Hat Head
Hats are tres trendy this season and, hello, keep your noggin toasty. Keep hat head away by brushing locks with a paddle brush. Then, mist hair with a light hairspray.

Pop on your topper—and avoid that tell-tale dent.

Zap Static Cling
Static seems unavoidable in the winter, but snoozing on a silk pillowcase may help ya avoid those freaky flyaways. They’re relatively inexpensive on amazon.com, and it’ll add a bit of glamour to  your nighttime routine.

Or, blast a bit of hairspray on a brush to smooth down hair.

Dry Locks Faster!
What’s worse than having damp hair on a frigid day? Uh, nothing.

Wrap strands in a microfiber towel to get hair dry faster.

Microfiber Hair Towel, $20, sephora.com

Keep Hair Hydrated
Frizzy, distressed locks just get worse in cold weather. Deep condition once a week to keep strands smooth and moisturized. Got limp hair?

Don’t condition the roots as deeply, or risk weighing down hair. This mask leaves your mane extra soft!

MOD MOD MOD Can you please help me? Do you have any ideas of what products I should use to protect my hair against heat damage? Something that works but you can find it at Walmart or Target. Thanks!!

Hey babe, try Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray and Sunsilk Heat Defenser Cream. You should find these at Target and Wal-Mart and they're not too expensive. Smile

MOD MOD MOD I used to have kind of bad acne but lately I've been using rubbing alcohol as a toner and my skin has cleared up a lot is alcohol bad for your skin?

Hey girl, yes, too much alcohol is bad for your skin because it starts to dry your face. But everyone's skin is different and it worked for you, so maybe it's not too bad. Since it's already cleared up your acne, you should leave it alone for now. Smile

I Spray some hairspray on my brush and brush my hair, it works amazingly! my hair isnt so staticy and no fly-aways. I straighten or curl my hair more than i should, i use this heat hairspray. My hair is naturally soft, so i dont know how i cant help with that, just find a good shampoo and conditioner and stick with it!

shattered lolli on 11/15/2009 8:09:49 AM

mod mod mod i have super thick long hair that is very straight like if i try to scrunch it it WILL NOT scrunch what are some ways to make it curly but not crunchy or should i just play up my natural texture?

Hey girl! You could try braiding your hair after you take a shower and sleeping with wet braids.  Then when you wake up your hair will be crimpy curly.  Or try playing up your natural texture! Thick hair is healthy and beautiful!

MOD
What are some hair and makeup ideas for school days? I usually have 20 minutes in the morning. I have shoulder length think wavy blonde hair, light skin and blue eyes.

Hey babe,

You don't need too much makeup for school - just lip gloss and maybe some mascara. For hair, try braids or headbands. They're easy and fast and look super cute.

[sorry, me again]
thanks for answering my question(:
I ahve another.
how do you flirt?

Hey girl, flirting is basically hinting you like someone. It's teasing with a guy and being subtle. Instead of saying "you're cute," it's saying "Oh, well, I might think you're cute..." and leaving the guy on edge.

modmodmod!
I have a question.
there's a guy that might possibly like me, but I'm not sure.
we have nicknames for eachother, and he's nice to me a lot. he talks to me and tells jokes and stuff, and them soemtimes I might ask a question and he comes up with soemthing innapropriate but funny about me. and that's kind of weird but it's fun too.
could he possibly like me?
and what should I do?

Hey girl, sounds like it's a possibility but it's hard to say entirely. He may just like you as a friend too. My suggestion? Try flirting with him a bit and seeing where it goes.  If he starts returning those kind of signals too, you might just have something.

mod! heeeeeyy ok. so i have a couple problems. first... i hate my church i mean like i beleive in god and everything but the way people treat me there is horribale. im not the perfect girl i make mistakes everyone does but the teachers and the girls there are really mean to me one time i wore my cheer shorts (spankees underneath) to an activity cuz it was right after cheer and i was showing my only freind there how cute my spankees where by lifting up my shorts a lil cuz i've been super excited to get them (they are zebra print really cute!) and girls are now calling me a stripper and a slut! and its all stupid. i am who i am and i dont act the same at church or around church people like i wont cuss saying anything bad do anything inapprpraite or anything but they still treat me like crap. i hate it! ok and my second thing is.... sooo me and this boy liked eachother almost all summer and ya we never went out tho cuz in our church we arent allowed to date till we are sixteen. (but we do anyway) but it would be bad cuz then the whole church would get involed and ya... so like when school started we stopped talking cuz he went to high school and im still in middle. but then we started talking again but i figgured out he talks to every girl the way he talks to me like saying how he likes me amd stuff so ya then things blew up and we dont like eachother anymore and everything is all wierd around him. but when ever i see him i get butterflies and i cant stop thinking bout him. idk if it's cuz im starting to like him again or just nervous to see what happens help!?
xoxo lover bug164
p.s. soarry its so long!<333

Hey girl, church prob first: that really bites. All you can do is let your words and actions speak for yourself. You shouldn't have to change who you are for these people (they as Christians should know God wants you to love and be accepting of everyone). If their words really hurt, talk to your parents. There are tons of other churches with a lot nicer people and less strict rules. As for the boy dilemma? Sounds like you might just be nervous to see what happens. There may be some feelings left which is perfectly natural, but I think for the most part you're over him.

What are some good ways to make your hair more curly and shiny without breaking or ruining it?
Thanks!

Hey girl, try sleeping in fabric curlers/rollers at night. As for shine? There are tons of products on the market that are safe and will add a li'l gleam to your hair. Do a li'l investigation and pick the best one to you before giving it a try!

ok, i got highlights last april to bring out my natural blond color. but now my hair is dry, breaking like crazy, and can be very frizzy! my mom got my some hydrating shampoo and conditioner but my hair is still the same! is there anything i can do to make my hair softer, stronger, and how can i get rid of too much breakage? thanks so much!
p.s. i wash my hair almost everyday (at night), i do brush it when it's wet, but i don't blow dry it! thanks <3

Hey girl! You can go to a hairdresser and ask them to use a hydrating rinse on your hair which may help. A home remedy is also mayo, this will hydrate your hair and it will look super shiny.

Hey girl! You need to talk to your mom and ask her the age that you are allowed to do these things. You can tell her that they are important to you and that you are ready to do them.

Oh and I use the blow dryer on low heat.

lilgirlyme on 11/9/2009 3:55:48 PM

Mod********* I have really thick hair, and I have to straighten it to wear it down (it is wayyyy to thick looking and frizzy regularly). I have a professional straightener btw and hair that is pretty dry. I want to know how I can keep my hair from getting heat damage, and how do I know if it is damaged? I usually wash my hair and blow dry it (I let it dry for as long as possible, but still have to blow dry it for 20 min, but I can cut this out completely) and straighten it. Then I touch it up mon morning and touch it up tues, then tues night I wash, blow dry and straighten (this time I have to blow dry at least a lil) then touch up wed morning and thurs morning, then wash thurs night, and do nothing to it and wear it up friday. I deep condition over the weekend and use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. So how can I keep my hair from being damaged by heat, and how do I tell if it is already? Do I need to get a heat protectant spray? Thanks so much!

Hey girlie,

It might be worth the money for you to get your hair relaxed at a salon. Just imagine not having to straighten your hair anymore! You hair stylist will be able to feel your hair and tell you if it's dry or damaged.

Hope this helps!

MOD
ok so i have short hair that slants diagonally, so like its at the nape of my neck, and it gets longer going down, so when it ends in the front it is down to like almost my collerbone, and i have this cute edgy bang that goes across my forehead, and kinda covers my eye,the only problem is that i have curly hair, so if i dont straighten it it looks stupid, so i always have to wear my hair with the bangs pushed to the sides of my head (which works because i have 2 cowlicks) but i really want to wear it the other way i described, but i never have time to straighten my hair because i have to take a shower in the morning because my hair gets really oily, and i always fall asleep before i take a shower at night. do you have any ideas how i could straighten my hair and make it look not poofy? (sorry this is soo long!!!)

Hey girl! The only way I think you will be able to straighten your hair and not have it look poofy is by using a straightener and some anti-frizz spray product. What you do is spray the product on a small section of your hair and then use the straightener. It will give you a smooth, sleek look. If your hair gets to be too much of a prob, you might want to think about getting your hair cut in a diff style. Sometimes cute hairstyles only look good with certain types of hair. Good luck!

Mod Mod Mod Mod!!!!! Ok. I have curly / wavy hair thats totally cute when I don't do anything to it. But I take a shower at night and don't want to have to do anything to it in the morning. But when I wake up in the morning my hair is all smushed! Any ideas how to make it not smushed in the morning without having to curl it or anythig??

Hey girl!  You can try showering in the mornings instead.  Or try putting your hair up in a messy bun after you shower, before you go to bed.  Since your hair is naturally curly, the curls from the buns won't make much of a difference, and your hair won't get flattened.  best, Kristen

mod*mod*mod* ok so like tht other comment... i want my hair straight and silky smooth and shiny these are the products i have: 1. pantene pro-v restoratives shampoo and conditioner 2. paul mitchell super skinny serum stuff for anti frizz and its a heat protectant 3.hair straightener 4.blow dryer 5. detangler spray 6. paul mitchell body and hair spray so got any ideas?

Hey girl!  These products will all work fine.  Use the shampoo and conditioner and blow dry your hair out of the shower.  use detangler to brush it out and then use the straightener to straighten your hair.  Apply some anti frizz serum, and you're ready to go!  best, Kristen

MOD*MOD*MOD* ok so this isnt really a problem but i wanted to ask you about this hairstyle i wanna do... ok so when my hair is wet i flip it upsidedown and put mousse in it and scrunch it up, when i do that for about 5 minutes, then i do the part and pin my bangs up and scrunch my hair even more and spray with extra hold hairspray .... it makes it have the wet wavy look..... what do ya think?

Hey girl!  I think that sounds like a great way to get gorgeous beachy boho waves.  Love it!  Best, Kristen

Mod! I have uber curly/wavy/frizzy hair. It's so curly that when it's curly and in a ponytail it looks like it's in a bun. It takes me forever to blow dry straight then straighten. Is there any faster way to keep it straight and pretty for school?

hey girl!  If you let your hair dry over night so it's dry in the morning, it'll take less time since you just have to straighten it instead of blow drying it in the morning.  Best, Kristen

Hey girl!  I think a pretty up do will look so sophisticated.  A messy bun with a few braids...perfect.  Since the neckline is so pretty by itself, I'd just add a funky cuff bracelet and black flats or pumps.  You're going to look so pretty!  Have fun, Kristen

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Hi... um I'm not really sure how to explain this problem. Lately I have been feeling very sad.... almost depression? But I can't figure out why! I know there are some possibilities.... I feel like my parents have been cracking down on me way too hard lately, and life is just so hard. I am getting behind in school work, and I feel like nobody wants to be my friend anymore, but I have plenty of friends! So do you have any adivce? Last night I was thinking about, well, cutting myself. I think I really need some help because I have started hitting my arms up on walls and banging my head on some things, or finding any way to cause myself pain. Please, please help!

Hey girl!  I'm sorry things have been really tought for ya, but hurting yourself is never the answer.  If you are really having a hard time, try talking to a close friend, or even a teacher you feel comfortable around.  having someone you feel ok talking to makes a HUGE difference.  You can also try seeing a school guidance counselor. There, you can get some pro help and advice.  Just try to focus on the positive, and don't be afraid to let people in on how you're feeling.  And please, don't hurt yourself.  That only avoids the issues and makes things worse.  Talk to someone!  Best wishes, Kristen
