Home-schooled...and social?

I'm in high school and I need some help. I used to go to public school, and I loved it! But, last year I had to come home.

The home-schooled kids are pretty cool, but I miss the social aspect of public school. How do I cope with being less social? Can you help? Thanks!

Hey girl,

I can only imagine how difficult it is for you to go from seeing your friends every day at school to maybe seeing them once or twice on weekends. People are social by nature and when you don’t get social interaction with friends, it can actually leave you feeling depressed  and sad. But, of course, there are ways of coping with these feelings and learning that being home-schooled can be just as much fun as going to public school!

Re-connect

Lost touch with friends you used to see every day at school? Just 'cause you’ve transferred doesn’t mean you have to stop hanging with your buds. Give them a call or send them a text to let them know you're thinking about them, then schedule a time when you can all hang out. You’ll find that just talking to your friends a few times a week can help you feel more happy and social.

Join a community program

I bet if you look on your community’s website or in your local library, you can find tons of events going on right in your own neighborhood. These are a great way of meeting and talking to new people. Interested in gymnastics? Take a class at the local YMCA. Wanna learn how to make pottery? I bet your community’s rec center has lessons. The good thing is you can pick and choose what you want to do and are guaranteed to meet people with similar interests.

Learn to love yourself

Sometimes I wish I had more alone time because being a social butterfly can get super-stressful. When you feel alone or sad because there’s no one to hang with, find an activity that you enjoy. Whether it’s turning on your iPod and taking a long, scenic walk, or watching cheesy chick-flicks, or playing your fave video game, find something that makes you feel happy, and you won’t feel so down in the dumps.

Remember, being alone isn’t always a negative thing and can actually help you learn more about yourself, which will help you when you socialize. So get out there and join a club to meet new people.

Xoxo,
Liz

Dear Home-Schooled and Lonely,

Make an effort to get together; if one of your friends plays sports, go to one of her games, start a book club and meet weekly. Is she in a club? JOIN! Really just get involved with what they're involved with.

Best Regards,
Olivia C.

Hey girl! Break it up. Do 10 minutes between each homework assignment. That way it will go quick and by the end of the day, you will be at 60.

Mod-
Hey, I wanna get better grades ,but going to see teachers during lunch or before/after school is difficult. Teachers to me I guess are intimidating. I don't like wasting lunch on work instead of having fun with friends I can rarely see on the weekends either. I am bad at time management too. I know I should set a time to do homework ,but my schedule after school always changes. I get majorly stressed out by projects or just simple papers because I always need everything to be perfect looking.
What can/should I do?Smile

Hey babe,

Missing out on friend time for one morning or one afternoon isn't going to make you anti-social. In order to get better grades, you need to make an effort to start changing. Talk to your teachers and see what's up. And put an hour or two aside every night to do homework. Progress is good!

join an outside of school activity either with your friends or without them (so u can easily be open to other people and make more friends). or you could tell people at your old school that every friday is ...bowling night, pizza night, movie night, ice-skating night, whatever will get people to show up basically. and then meet somewhere and ...bowl, eat, watch, skate, whatever. make sure bunch of people are there with their OWN $ so you don't need to buy everything; that would suck. this may sound like a lot of work but it's awesome and lots of fun when it is all done and organized! plus think about it school is a terrible place to be social; uh hello teachers (you don't know how many times I've gotten in trouble for impersonations when they were right behind me...)

lilmssunshine on 11/23/2009 1:54:45 PM

Are you kidding me???? I'v been homeschooled my whole life, and i'm just as social as my friends in public school! I have tons of friends at church, in my homeschool group, my neighbors, i meet friends in all the plays that i'm in, and tons of other ways! Most people think that being homeschooled means that you're a isolated nerd! Bu that's not always true! We're not socialy-deprived freaks! lol! Smile

daffyduck324 on 11/23/2009 10:58:13 AM

They always make homeschooling sound so depressing on GL! I'm homeschooled and I love it! I know most kids that are homeschooled usually switch over some time in middle school, so everyone pretty much has the same issue with not being able to see their friends all the time. First off, co-op's are awesome, it's like regular school, but I only go once a week, get all my homework, (then go again the next week)! And I get to see my friends! Do you know how many homeschool groups there are!?! Google them! I just moved states, and joined a few homeschool groups and made friends really fast! And hang out with some kids in your neighborhood!... If they're down the street or something, you guys can hang out after both of your work is done (my personal fave!). You don't have to cope with no friends, and take walks or listen to music to help fill your empty void... There ARE options! (And P.S. - Homeschooled kids AREN'T nerd despite what most people think... They're the same as everybody else, without as much peer-pressure! Smile

Lexy5 on 11/22/2009 10:41:39 PM

Being social isnt a bad thing you can be social and also learn while being on the computer lol I love being social Smile

So for now get prepared with pads and tampons and click this link to visit our period page and learn all about them and discharge. Smile

I just started homeschooling so that I can do more dancing, modeling and acting. I loved the social aspects of school, and i miss being around people all the time. even though I am around friends and stuff, my problem is that I am never around guys anymore. I am always around girls. I really miss having guys in my life. not just as a BF but as a friend too. What else can I do so that I have more contact with guys?
Thanks :]

Annalina1218 on 11/22/2009 1:58:37 PM

You can def email...... and there are some really cool things that yall could do on the weekends like go bowling or something. It'll be really great to catch up, and, make sure that you fill them in on what's happening in your life, 2!!!!!!! they'll prob LOVE hearing about how you found the cutest shoes online today, or something like that!!!!!!

MOD MOD MOD I'm a freshman and I love school it's just I can't seem to stay commited to my work. Like a couple day I'll be really working hard and studying and doing well and then I slip up and I just get so frustrated and I don't do my work then my grades reflect my inconsistentcy. What can I do to stay motivated? I'm trying so hard and my mom keeps telling me colleges look at your grades since freshman year and I'm really worried that I won't get into good schools if I keep doing this! Please Help!!! Thanks!

Hey girly, use different things to motivate you. Think about your mom, family and yourself when you feel you're about to slip. Think about how much your mom and family are counting on you to excel in school and how proud they will be of you when you do. For yourself, think about how important school and education is to your future. Colleges do look at your grades, and if you get bad ones you won't get into the schools you want to. Remember knowledge is power, the more you learn the farther you'll go. Smile

clsgl on 11/21/2009 9:35:21 AM

I went to public school from Pre-K through 5th grade.
Where I live, middle school is REALLLLY bad so I am doing homeschooling since 6th grade and I'm in 7th now. I ♥ it! All my friends were sad when i told them but most of them my close one r in homeschooling now too! I AM REALLLLLLYYY SOCIAL!

U dont have 2 go 2 school to hav friends. I have buddies in Canada, NY and Missouri and my Canadian bffs r coming in December and all my friends r ok with it.

I LOVE IT, BUT I KNOW EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT SITUATIONS! ♥

i was home schooled 4 2 years. it wasnt bad but i missed my friends. tho thats not the reason im back in school.
hey if you are homeschooled, sometimes different churches have homeschool groups.
they had one in my town.
they even had a a choir and athletic programs.

megarielang on 11/20/2009 7:56:01 PM

I am homeschooled and i want to go back to school but we can't afford the private school that i previously went to so i would have to go to public school and even though i really want to go back to school i don't think it would be worth it to not know anyone there, make totally new friends, be in a much bigger school with a completely different system, etc. What should i do???!!!

Eh, my problem is the same. I was signed up for girls club, so I go there sometimes. I think trying out a community program would be fun. I'll look into that. nicole66016601 alot of the time it depends on what area or what kind of friends a person has... Sometimes people just can't be social very easily.

Hey Girls! I wrote this short poem because I was feeling kinda down.
Comment about it on my profile! Thanks!

Stop the screaming
I can’t get out.
I try to run
But I’m burnt out.
You yell and hit
I try to escape
But you pull me back
Making me misshape.
You tell me I’m wrong
But I do not listen
What you say isn’t true
This darkness is to driven.
All these little problems
I don’t understand
Why are you doing this?
I’m drifting off to a dreamland.

Okay so there's this girl who my friends and I recently ended our friendship with (for very important reasons, not just anything.) She is anorexic and has severe anxiety. Basically her brain doesn't work exactly the same way ours does. But she keeps trying to get our attention by being mean to us and calling my other best friend short (which she is, but she's very insecure about it.) This girl just wants attention and just wants us to be her friend, but she doesn't get that we aren't going to after what she did to us (abandoned me for the popular girl, came back before summer vaca telling me how evil the popular girl was, then went back to the popular girl when school started). But she does anything she can to annoy us for our attention! It's getting so annoying, especially since she's starting to copy everything we do because she's very insecure. I've been trying to avoid her, but she keeps butting into our conversations when we don't want her there! even one of her other friends stopped hanging out with her because she was too annoying! what do i do to get her to stop?? (p.s. i've already told her kindly that our friendship won't work out, and i dont talk to her much anymore and I try not to act angry when she's annoying us)
Wow, sorry that was SO long lol

Hey girl, just be polite around her but don't give much attention beside that. Your friend def has probs and she does need a friend. That said, in order to have a friend, you need to be a friend too. Be supportive of her as she battles her eating disorder but don't be afraid to draw the line and keep your distance. You should be civil, but you don't have to be BFFs.

Hey girl, write your mom a nice letter about how much she means to you and add in an IOU. Promise her a movie on you or a girl's night together. She'll appreciate spending time with you more than any gift. And a bonus? Try making her a little treat now.

I would have to say, surprisingly, I would know what you're going through, in my 8th grade year, I have a medication reaction to paxil, I had suicidal thoughts, but no cutting. and I went to the hospital. I was home-schooled half of my 8th grade year, after I got out of the hospital.
