My dad has started dating again after my parents’ divorce, which I am happy about ‘cause I think my dad does deserve some time for his own life, but there is a problem. He admits he is going on dates but then he says no more than that.

And now he also has password locks on everything he owns—his computer, his email, his phone, his iTouch and his desk drawers—he practically freaked out when I tried to open one to get a pencil to do my homework. I understand he wants his privacy, but this is getting a little ridiculous. What can I do to get my dad to trust me with just as little info as a name?

Hey there hon,

It’s really great that you’re so supportive of your dad! It shows you’re mature and caring, he is so lucky to have a daughter like you. However, your dad may feel a little uncomfortable talking to you about his relationships for whatever reason. Maybe he thinks it’s too soon after the divorce. Or perhaps he doesn’t want you to feel like he’s trying to replace your mom. But what he needs to understand is that his super-secrecy may be doing more harm than good.

It may help to talk to your dad about what you’re going through and how you feel. Next time you have dinner you could casually say, “Hey, Dad, I’m really glad you’re dating and I totally support you. But I’ve been feeling left out and I’d really appreciate it if you’d trust me enough to include me in that part of your life.” After all, you’re his daughter and he should want you to be a part of it.

Your dad may not feel comfortable talking about his dates at first. Remember he loves you and he’s probably doing what he thinks is best. But if you continue to show your support and help him feel comfortable, eventually he’ll open up.
