Makeover Your Fast Food Picks!

 
Question of the Week: What are some healthier fast food options?

Whether your mom pulls into Mickey D’s for lunch or your soccer team makes a pit stop at Taco Bell, sometimes fast food is totally unavoidable. Even though these joints are notorious for serving up super-fatty foods, at drive through dinner doesn’t have to be a total nutritional nightmare. We’ve got a few tips for finding better-for-you options when you’re on the run.

Here are few picks from some common pit-stops:
 
Subway
Getting sammies? Load up on veggies, opt for whole grain bread and skip the mayo.

Before: An Italian sub with cheese. It tastes good, but all that meat is loaded with salt.
After: Ditch all the extra meats and opt for a turkey sandwich. Spice it up with mustard and a slice of cheese. Pile it high with vegetables!
 
Panda Express

At the mall and dying for Chinese food? Look for brown rice and steamed veggies, and try to stay away from fried or noodle dishes.

Before: Orange Chicken is loaded with fat and calories—with very little nutritious value.
After: Beef & Broccoli gives ya more nutrients (like iron and fiber) and less grease. Be sure to drink plenty of water...the dish still has lotsa sodium.
 
McDonald’s
These arches are everywhere! But they don’t just serve up burgers, shakes and nuggets. Grilled chicken, salads (without going overboard on the dressing) and small burgers are your best bets.

Before: Even a cheeseburger and fries can weigh in at over 600 calories—crazy! That’s before adding an extra patty, special sauce or soda.
After: The Southwest Chicken Salad (ask for grilled chicken) is a pretty good choice. Just make sure to go easy on the dressing. Gotta have a burger? Order from the kids’ menu!
 
Taco Bell
Avoid the combos (all those ingredients add up!) and order items one at a time. That way, you won’t feel pressure to finish another taco.

Before: Nachos Bellgrande sounds like a side dish, right? Turns out, this plate o’ chips is one of the heftiest items on the menu.
After: Go for chicken or beef tacos off the Fresco or regular menu. Y-U-M!

mod mod mod MOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok so my cusin is in 6th grade and she loves to hang with me. but latly shes been getting realy confterble around my freind and acting like ther her bffs. most of them think shes a freak. i really like hanging out with her but i cant help but feel like shes stealing my friends!when ever i talk about 1 of my freinds she gets al lup in my face and tells me how there her freinds not mine. wat should i do?!

 

Hey girl! You should try to talk to your cousin about it. She may just really like your friends and life and feels like that's the way to include herself. Try to be sympathetic but maybe make sure to have your own time with your friends without her!

I always get the chicken salad at McDonald, I don't really go to Taco Bell. I have to admit I get the orange chicken at panda express, but I only go there twice in a year. But yeah this is really good advice

I have a friend who I don't like hanging out with. She's always has a negative attitude, pressures me to do things I don't want to do (not anything really bad just joining different school groups and stuff), and makes fun of me (But she adds the i'm just kidding thing at the end). She asks me why i don't email her anymore but the problem is i don't want to talk to her at all anymore! How do I break apart from her without hurting her feelings?




Hey girl, it's hard to break up a friendship, but the best approach with this girl is to do is gently and casually. Don't go out of your way to talk to her. Be polite if she confronts you, but draw the line and distance yourself from her. She should get the hint you two have just more or less grown apart.

I have a big problem. I actually am seriously overweight. And I love chipotles. I try to eat healthy and exercise but it lasts for less then a day. I'm on the b-ball team at school but I still end up gaining a couple pounds every week.

 

Hey chica!

My first reaction is to say I TOTALLY agree with you, chipotle has insanely good food! Second reaction, chipotle also has an insane amount of calories. Even though it's delicious, if you want to lose weight, you're gonna have to cut out greasy and fatty foods: this includes chipotle, all fast food, chips and cookies. Eat lots of healthy food though because you're still going to burn calories through practicing. Also something to think about, if you're an athlete, some of the weight probably isn't fat, it's muscle tissue which develops naturally through all of your activity. There's nothing wrong with that!

Hey chica!

Wow, it's great that you're doing it so well in advance!! Easiest method is to stop eating junk food. Unfortunately that means chips, cookies and other sweets have to go. On top of that, exercise 3-4 times a week and ALWAYS eat breakfast. Don't skip meals, it won't help your diet at all. Good luck and have an awesome time at that wedding!

at McD. i always order just a burger w. lettuce and tomato. there salads are hard to eat on the go, so i wouldn't go w. them.

subway is just sooo great. i especially love there multigrain bread, w. whatever (healthy) toppings you like.

everything from taco bell is disgusting Tong

since i hardly ever go to panda express i usually "splurge" on the orange chicken just because its sooo good and nowhere else can make it like that....

At subway I get a completly plain ham and cheese sandwich usually. My mom never lets me try 5 doller foot longs but I want the meatball one...yum!
Never been to Panda Express.
At Mickey D's I usually get a plain hamburger, large fries, and large sprite. I'll get the chicken salad next time!
At Taco Bell...haven't been in like 2 or 3 years! Haha I think I get something from the kids menu lolSmile

unless you are super-fat until the point where its unhealthy, you shouldnt hav to care about your weight.

I hardly ever eat at fast food places. Maybe once ever three to four months. I've been to subway once, at a time when I was vegetarian and I had an all veggie sub and it was delicious!!

Ok so I am a pretty healthy eater and pretty much stick to a good lifestyle. But when I talk to boys I always think they are seeing the small tummy roll, my curvy theighs, or my super pale skin and think of me as ugly, or 'just a friend'. I know I am not over weight or any of this things, but I am very self concious! Do boys notice this things?

At subway i get a BLT or a veggie on italian herb and cheese bread with lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, olives, cheddar cheese, pickles,oil and vinegar, etc. and its AHMAZING hahaa

Huh, just ate at McDonald's! And I am super proud (maybe not for food choices) that I paid for it all myself! I even bought dessert for my bro and me! My parents weren't interested, but I'm sure they'll want some later!
Subway is great! Panda Express ain't a problem for me, and we've never been to Taco Bell...

I only eat at Subway <3 and Panda Express out of them. At subway i get 6inch wheat w/cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, green peppers, the veg. pattie, honey mustard and the spices. Its soo good! Laughing

I have a problem. Well not really a problem but sort of a dilemma. I think I'm really pretty, it's just that I feel like I weigh too much. I mean I'm eating healthy and working and I know it's a slow process to loose weight but that's not my problem. My problem is confidence! How can I build some up? I'm really quiet and the guy that I like and he used to like me started going out with someone else because we quit talking and we kinda just lost it. How can I at least act like I'm confident?

Babe , you are beautiful just the way you are! You are not too big, you are not too small, you are JUST right Smile  Make a list of all the things you like about yourself, that are unique, or special to you.  Practice looking at yourself in the mirror and giving yourself compliments (sounds silly I know, but it will work! Even just to put a smile on your face! ) Put your shoulders back when you walk and smile, you'll look like your confident self.
