My brother's been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome

Check these out, too...

  • Sharing a room with a slobby sister
  • What to do when you 'n' your sibs are stuck like glue
  • Does my brother have ADD, or is he just annoying?
  • Should I set up my sis with her crush?
  • I'm following Mom's no-makeup rule, but sis is sneaking it!

My five-year-old brother was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, I love him more than anything but I don't know what to do. He has lots of behavior problems and a few times he's even had to be taken out of school for throwing things, hitting teachers, etc.

It's really scary when he's like this because he acts like a different person. I love him to pieces but I just can’t bear all of us being so stressed like this. How can this get better?

Hey hon, your little bro is definitely lucky to have you as a big sis. He’s going through a tough time and it’s great he has someone like you who loves him so much. Obviously, this is a difficult time for you and your family. But together you will all make it through.

What is Asperger Syndrome?

Asperger Syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes difficulty interacting with others, repetitive behaviors, clumsiness and intense interest (so, maybe your bro's really focused on a certain hobby). Unfortunately, there is no cure, but with behavioral therapy lots of people with this condition go on to lead full and happy lives. Other treatments and medications can also ensure that your bro will improve. His diagnosis is nothing to be ashamed about—it’s a medical condition he can’t control and neither can you.

Stand by your sib

The best way to make this all better is to be supportive. Your brother needs you now more than ever before. Make sure you tell him how much you love him and how that will never change no matter what. Find an activity that seems to calm him and make him happy, like listening to music or going for a walk, and make a regular date with him to do it.

Support yourself!

But don’t forget to take out time for yourself, too. It may seem selfish, but it’s healthy and necessary. Talk about what’s going on with a friend you trust, who will understand and have your back. Expressing your thoughts and feelings in a journal can be helpful, too. It may also help to find out if there are some local groups you can join to talk to people who know exactly what you’re going through. No, it’s not going to be easy, but you’re strong and you can do it. Best of luck, girl, and keep your head up!
