It’s gross, but my friends and I are arguing about masturbation. Does it break your virginal seal?

Masturbation isn’t gross, but talking about it can be embarrassing. It’s super-private, after all!

Touching yourself cannot break the seal, called the hymen, which is a ring of tissue inside the opening of a girl’s vagina, explains Dr. Larrian Gillespie, a urogynecologist in Los Angeles.

Tampons usually don’t break the hymen either. Most often, they hymen only tears after sexual intercourse—although horseback riding or bike riding might cause it to rip. There can be slight bleeding and a bit of pain when it does break.

To any girls curious about masturbating, it is perfectly normal and even healthy. It is when you in a sexual way touch, rub, or otherwise sexually stimulate your vagina. It is (in my opinion) a safer alternative to actually having sex. It is an extremely private affair that most people are embarresed to talk about. The reason I posted this is because I think if a girl is already looking at an article like this, she wants to know the truth, no matter how private. Hey! Though I don't know much about it, it's certainly true that boys experience shifts in hormones. This happens over the course of each day and even yearly with the production of testosterone, which peaks in the morning and dwindles around noon. Essentially, what he's saying is true, except that this cycle has no physical signs of being a monthly occurrence in men the way it is for women.

I had the talk about guys sex and masturbating with my mom and even if our moms dont say anything they know we masturbate or will start sometime. And its normal at first to feel guilt from doing it because we feel pleasure from it. Part of the guilt could be because it has to do with us doing something 'down there' that feels good. But the more you masturbate the more you will feel that its normal to do it.

And if you feel paranoid that your parents know, just try to do it when they arent home and you have more privacy, just lock your bedroom or bathroom door when you do it.

Its completely normal for girls to masturbate. We dont talk about it like guys do but we do it to. And when it comes to toys, I would watch that Oprah tv program that went over things for girls to understand about masturbating and using toys and how normal it is. I watched it with my mom online and it was a big help, some of it was embarrassing but it was good for both of us to watch, especially for me to learn about toys and realizing I am not weird.

Just do your own research about it, because I think its good to know things about it.

volley..ball820, I think we all go through those feelings, I did when I first started exploring down there. I am kind of over feeling weird about doing that now but we are all different, and if you want to stop I hope you can. I know our hormones have something to do with it, so that is why we get those urges to masturbate. And for me if I see a cute guy or if I even read or watch something on tv, it might make me think about doing it and I end up giving in and doing it.

But like the mod said just start cleaning or exercising and it does take some practice to not give into to wanting and having those urges to do it. Part of me just kind of gave into it realizing its normal, but thats me.

Hey girl! I totally know what you mean ... they used to hurt me too, until I realized the "right" way to put them in! If it hurts, you're probably not putting the tampon in far enough - the string should only be hanging out, about an inch from your body. Also, when you're putting them in, the best way is to "wiggle" them gently in at an angle ... this aligns with your body shape. If you try this and it continues to hurt really bad, you should talk to your mom or see a doctor. Good luck!

But if you dont its basically touching down there like the article says, and most of us do it or start to do it around the ages we are now. I agree its not bad to do before or after you start having your period and as long as it doesnt get in the way of everyday things like doing school work and being social its totally normal and natural! And I know there are times when you will want to do it more and when you want to do it less, so dont get scared when that happens because we are all kind of going through the same thing. I am glad my teacher brought up the subject of masturbating and breaking our hymens in class when we went over human development because it wasnt something we were going come out and ask. She said it was very normal and that most people do it even if they dont admit it.

And I know on The Secret Life show they are talking about it a lot, and I think they are doing that so people will understand its an alternative to us having sex with a guy. Maybe if people understood that teen pregnancy would go down or we wouldnt get involved with a guy as young as some of us are doing. I kind of agree with that.

Our teacher said, blame it on hormones and being curious and not because its gross or bad to do.
