I have this clear white stuff in my underwear?!

 
What is it, and why do I have it every day? Is it supposed to itch or smell?

This clear, white stuff is “a very normal part of puberty. It signals the uterus that it needs to get ready for changes that are about to occur,” say Dr. Carol Upright, Stanford Conn. gynecologist. It’s sort of a warning signal that your first period will probably start within the year.

Quite simply, vaginal secretions or discharge clean any bacteria in the vagina. So, even after you get your period, the discharge continues and may be heavier at certain times of the month. Wear a panty liner if it bothers you.

Your vagina can also be a little itchy sometimes, thanks to new hair growth, discharge buildup, or even a yeast infection. Yeast is usually present in the vagina but can multiply due to hormonal or Ph-balance changes in the vagina, and that can get itchy. If you have a yeast infection, you might notice a fishy odor and clumpy white discharge. When you notice any unusual smell or irritation, see your doc.

To prevent infections, Dr. Upright suggests washing thoroughly with mild, perfume-free bath soap and wearing clean cotton underwear. Stay away from nylon panties, which can cause odor and trap sweat, leading to itching or infection.

mod mod mod i usually have mediumish to heavy amounts of discharge and its really sticky so its uber embarassing when i have to unstick my underwear (and it mostly looks like i have a backwards wedgie) so how do i tell my mom that ineed panty liners she also thinks there only for periods

They make special liners for discharge, but if you think you're having more than normal, you might want to talk to a doc!

Help! I'm only 9 years old and I have this white sticky stuff in my undies. I haven't gone through any puberty yet besides pubic hair. But What is this white stufff and why is it there. I haven't told my mom cause she doesn't really do anything. And she doesn't even telll me what these things could be from. She just says oh idk why. So I was trying to see if anybody else could tell me what this stuff is.

MOD MOD MOD !!! A year ago my period became irregular & the doctor decided to put me on birth control pills , she said it will help regulate my menstrual. But I'm a very forgetful person, so I missed days * sometimes weeks without thing the pill & my period would disappear along with it. So my period wouldn't come back unless I took the pill. Do I went to my doctor & explaind this to her, & she said I need to go back to taken the pill & this time make sure I do it everyday because I could me messing myself up & might not be able to have children. So I got really scared & decided on my own to go against the doctors orders, let my body cleanse itself from those pills & let it do whatever it wants, as long as its natural. So I went "natural" & had about 7-9 months period free. Then it came once & the next 3-5 months I haven't gotten my period. I'm really scared I may not be able to have kids. Was my decision right? What does this mean? What should I do? & what can I expect in the future?




Hey girlie,

These are all questions for your doctor, not us mods. We can help with lots of different things, but we're not professionals and are not trained in medicine! Try writing down all your questions and bringing them to the doctor. Chances are, your period is still naturally irregular for some reason and just not coming every month like it should. But you REALLY need to listen to your doctor and follow her orders. If she puts you on the pill, you need to take it every day. (Get mom on board to remind you, or write it on your calendar/set an alarm so you don't forget.) If she decides you'll be ok going off the pill, you can. But you shouldn't make choices like that on your own without consulting her. Doctors come up with plans to treat the health issues you're having - going against them defeats the whole purpose of going to the doctor in the first place! <3

I no what discharge is. I have been getting it since 4th grade, and I'm in 7th now. But today it was different, it odorless, clumpy and sticky. Is that okay? I don't have my period.




Hey Chica,

There are lots of different kinds of discharge, and as long as it's odorless, you shouldn't have a problem. It probably means you're getting your period soon, but if you're still worried, think about seeing your doc.

What is discharge like?! Because i sometimes get clear,really thin,kinda sticky stuff(like if you touch it and lift your finger the undie comes up tiny eensy weensie bit) in my undies?! Yep, that clear sticky stuff is discharge! You always get it, but it varies in "flow" from day to day just like a period. Sometimes it's not there at all, sometimes it feels heavy and like it's come out a lot, and sometimes it dries up on your underwear without you even noticing. You're totally normal babe - don't stress! Smile

Ive had my period for 4 months now and have only had it three times. the most previous time, was really heavy. It seeped through my pad, underwear pants and onto my bed. After that, I only had a very minimal amount. Will it always be like this? Is it just catching up because i missed one month?




Your period will be "out of wack" for a year or two after you first get it Smile

Hey babe! Just because your mom got her at some point doesn't mean your body is the same. Just relax, it will come soon enough and when it does, after a while of having it, your going to wish it didn't. Many other factors come into play, such as color and smell in order to determine if it's normal or not. I suggest talking to your doctor.

i have had dicharge since halfway through grade six and i noticed brest buds early grade 5. i started growing pubic hair down there near the end of grade 6 but i still dont have armpit hair. im in grade 8 and i havent got my period yet. my mom got hers at 11 and our growth has kinda been the same [comparing to when she was my age]up till when i was halfway through grade 7[when i got my growth spurt and grew from 4'8- 5'1 1/2}. since then i have growen 2 inches. my docter says it[my period] should have come like a year or more ago but they arent that worried because my growth has mantianed a stedy pace. recently [since last wendsday or more] i have been, very moody [depressed , crying, happy to angery really fast etc.] a headache that only goes away after having advil, exesive farting, breasts got slightly bigger, iregular sleeping habits [on monday i slept from 10pm-2 pm the next day then had a nap from 3-4pm, walking up in the middle of the night etc] is my periord coming soon?

hi, im 14 years old, gr. 9 in canada. I got discharge the first time in august 2010, and im confused, will i get my period soon??? im a late bloomer already, and even 3 doctors were a bit surprised about how i dont have my period yet. my 2 family doctors, and my dermatologist. All my friends got it a few years ago, they all have big bra sizes, while i dont even fit into a 34 AA. I try to wear a pushup bra, but that doesnt really help with boosting my self esteem. Im almost 6 feet(im tall)and most girls say i have a nice body, but the fact that im kind of flat doesnt help. Should i just stop whining and wait, or should i go see a genecologist? my mom got her first period when she was 15, but i know everyone is different. Also back to the discharge, some of my friends only had it for a few months or weeks, is more than a few months.does it relate to getting the period earlier or later?Many guys r stupid cuz they dont find me attractive because of how im kinda flat. please try to help :]

Dont fret! We all get white liquid in our underwear from time to time. Thats how your body cleans itself down there. However if it happens often it may be a sign youre gonna get your period. Just be prepared with pads and tampons for whatever Smile xoxo kerra

Hey girlie, tell her what a problem it is for you and you're not sure if it's normal. Help her understand your discomfort. You can also try pantyliners instead of pads that will do the same thing, but they're thinner and more comfortable.

Hey everyone! I'm twelve, and I have discharge every now and then. About once a month. I read a puberty book my mom gave me, and i've read this website, and i'm not really scared of it. Sure, sometimes it can be a tad annoying, but if you don't want to tell your mom or you don't want to wear a panty liner, you could even fold a sheet of toilet paper into a square and put it in your underwear. But, I would suggest talking to your mom for the best decision, she went through the same thing!

Mod i need help im embarrassed to ask since it seems like a lot younger girls ask questions like this, but i am 16 and very tiny like skinny, my best friends are all bigger like built wise and they all started their periods quite a while ago, i haven't had mine yet!. is it because i'm so little? I am tall though, have hair in those places, and alot of discharge, i usually never get pimples, but recently have and on another article it says you get a few pimples right before your period. My mom started when she was like 14 and im 16 already and have yet to have it. I feel so un-normal. My friends say good for me because it sucks, but i don't feel like it's a good thing. should i see a gyno? Plus it's weird to talk to my mom because it's just too awkward. Help please..

Hey girl, 16 is later than some people, but maybe because you're so skinny, yours will probably be a little later. If you're skinny because you're not eating enough, then you could start eating more (healthy foods), but if you're eating a regular amount, I guess it's just your metabolism. I think there's probably not a problem -- everyone gets their period at a different age -- but it might be a good idea to ask your gyno or regular doctor just in case.

Theres no exact average for this kinda thing. It can happen anywhere from 5th grade to 9th grade. So its mostly middle school age and early high school age that girls get their period. Good luck! xoxo kerra

Everyone's body is different. There are a variety of different things that come with puberty, and some may get their period before some stages while some may get it after — you never really know. Ask your doctor if you have questions.

You could be spotting. Not everyone gets cramps. I wouldn't worry, it is normal to get when going through puberty.

Hey girlie,

There is nothing wrong with you, based on what you've told me!  Discharge isn't always consistently heavy or light, so no worries on that one - it changes all the time.  Just keep a look-out for your period and I'm sure it'll come soon.  But don't be discouraged if it doesn't - I remember having a few "false alarms" before my first one came Smile it's all natural and you'll be fine!

Sometimes your flow and things change normally, so it is probably just fine.  If it starts to come back with a smell, color change, or burning sensation, then you should see a doc, because it might be an infection.  If you have more worries, I would check with a parent or doc - they can help you make sure everything is a-okay!  xoxo

Hey girly, usually discharge is one of the first signs that you're period is on its way, so I wouldn't be surprised if you did get it soon. However, everyone is different, so, it's tough to say when it'll happen. Might as well take some pads in your backpack or purse just to be on the safe side in case it comes while you're in school.

Hey girl, the thing about discharge is that it really is different for everyone. I'm sorry you're having such a rough time, but I would reccommend wearing dark underwear on days you think it might be bad, and also wearing thin panty liners.

Hey girl, be sure to wear a bra in general (a sports bra is ok if you're more comfortable with it) -- I'd talk to your mom and make sure you're fitted for the right size bra -- it makes all the difference. As for the white stuff? That's discharge and it's totes natural.

Hey babe! Your cycle may have switched to the week after and there's no way to tell 100% if it will go back to how it was or if it has switched for good.  If you want to start having more of an idea when you will get it, you could ask your parents about going to the doctor to regulate your body.

i got my discharge everyday for 2 years before my period as well. btw Lilsugarcutie618, i never got cramps with my first period either, and i was never moody. i didn't notice at all. and to answer ur question, u might have gotten ur period and missed out on it for a number of reasons (one being that u're not eating enough healthy food). or maybe u can ask ur mother for help. sorry if this didn't help. hope it does.

No worries, there are training bras for girls who may not need a bra, but choose to wear one anyway.  They come in pretty colors and can usually be found at most stores (even Kohls or Target).  It's cool that you want to talk to your mom more about these things! She may not be pressing any issues because she doesn't want to make you feel uncomfortable, or she may not know that you think about them! Try opening the conversation between the two of you, she'll probably be happy that you did! If you let her know you're curious, she'll be more likely to be open and share her advice and suggestions.

Hey girl! When you change your body cycle it could mess everything up. Sudden changes in your daily routine MAY affect your period, but not so much keep it from ever coming... You still have time, don't rush it! All girls are different, even mom and daughter. Try to get more sleep though, then it might come sooner!

Hey girlfriend, nope periods aren't scary at all. They're a good thing actually. Periods help your bod get rid of the waste in your system. All that happens is blood exits your vagina, and you wear a pad to collect the blood. During your period you might get head or stomach aches, but nothing too serious. 2. 6 months to a year before a girl gets her first period, her body will start to produce that discharge.  Both clear and milky are normal - sometimes thicker discharge comes around the time a girl ovulates, which means your period could be on its way.  But the only way you'll know for sure is once you actually GET it...so sit tight and don't rush it! Hey girl, pads aren't that bad, trust me. I'd go with pads for your first period and switch over to tampons after. I use pads and believe me, you don't notice them after a while -- especially if you don't think about it.

Hey chicky, yup that's discharge. You usually get white discharge before your period and because of your belly pains, I think your period is on its way. So get prepared with some pads and medicine for your tummy. Smile

Hey girlfriend, yup you're completely normal. Discharge is usually clearish, white or yellow. You should be okay unless it's clumpy like cottage cheese because if it is, you could have an infection. But you're fine girl! Smile

1. Yes you can get pads in many different sizes.  They normally come in pantyliners (which are super thin), ultra-thin, regular, super, and overnights.  You can use whichever you feel comfy with!

 

2. As long as you're responsible and careful about changing your tampon regularly, they're safe to use at any age.

Hey babes, signs of your period are irritability, cramps and headaches. These symptons comes one or two days before your period so if you have been having them for years, it probably isnt PMS and youre just nervous about getting your period., xo JANA

I don't believe it when they say your period comes within the year you get discharge. I've had it since i was like 5 years old. My mom told me that it was normal and that every girl had it. I still haven't got my period, even if I've had discharge for years!

Sorry about not responding!  We really do try to get to everyone, but we're only human Smile  To answer your question, that could be a sign of a period, but it could just be your body changing.  You'll only be able to know for sure if you do get your period.  If it continues, try asking your mom or giving your doc a call.

It's normal to get discharge in between your periods that is white, off-white, or clear. But if you think it's really bad, you might want to check with your doctor! They will be able to tell you if what you're experiencing is normal, and they will be able to help you if it's not.
