Pay attention to what's going on—for example the Olympics are on right now. Ask what his fave event and athlete are. Or, bring up specific stuff that's pretty huge ("Did you see U.S.A.'s big win over Canada? What did you think of Ryan Miller? What do you think is gonna happen in the finals?"). Pretty much everyone's excited about the big games, so you'll probably get to talkin'.
Other topics? The weather (cuh-razy snowstorm in your area? Ask him what he did on his snow day), sports stuff (always a guy fave!) or any upcoming concerts or movies (maybe you guys could go together). For now, steer clear of really serious convos on topics like politics, religion and war. It's awesome that you have your own opinion, but keep your initial chit-chats light and fun.
