Imagine you’re on MySpace and meet a totally cool guy who says he’s your age, lives nearby and has tons of things in common with you. Would you let him into your life—or remember that he’s a complete stranger?

Now, with a few keystrokes, you can reach out to the world. So if you’re going to tangle with the Web, you have to protect yourself from potential risks. And there are plenty.

The most dangerous areas on the Web are probably your faves: chatrooms, blogs and IMs. But, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), that’s where at least one in five kids, ages 10 through 17, receive sexual solicitations every year. Still, most teens think, “How unsafe could it be if I’m sitting online, with my mom and dad in the next room?” Uh, very.

Say you’re hanging out on a social networking site, like Facebook, Friendster, Twitter or MySpace, where you can blog, chat, IM and exchange photos. You think you’re just finger-yappin’ away with another teen but, in reality, you could be talking to—gulp!—one of the many child predators on teen sites looking for his next victim.

Danielle Yates, communications director for The Internet Education Foundation, explains, “Teens just don’t realize the 14-year-old they’re supposedly talking to could just as easily be a 40-year-old man.” Since anyone over 14 can log on to MySpace (while Facebook only requires you to be 13), who knows who’s really out there?

You might think, “But those are teen sites, so only kids use them.” And that’s exactly why predators log on—so they can get tons of information about you. Yikes! Think about it: in your member profile, at a bare minimum, you probably have your name, city and age. Most teens, though, add much more, like hobbies, birthdate, e-mail address, photos, names of friends and daily journal entries.

And why not? If you’re trying to make friends online, you figure you have to describe who you are, right? Problem is, creeps may be reading all about you and could easily track you through your info. Detective Frank Dannahey of the Rocky Hill Police Department in Middletown, Conn., is an expert in online child predators: “Kids think they’re safe on these sites because they’re very naive and trusting. That’s a nice quality, but for going online, it’s not a good thing.”

Staca Urie, manager of Outreach for Netsmartz, explains, “Many teens have a lack of awareness of the magnitude of the Internet—that it really is the World Wide Web. They figure if there are millions of profiles and blogs out there, ‘Who is actually going to see mine?’ But nobody is safe.”

Shockingly, Detective Dannahey has found that most teens using MySpace do not know everyone on their “friends list,” which allows a visitor full access to personal info.

Teens think victimization happens to other kids and that it would never happen to them. “But if a bad guy you meet online finds out where you are and flies or drives for hours to meet you, he’s not going home without getting what he wants—even if he has to force you,” says the detective.

Many girls think sites like MySpace have a strict screening process so sickos can’t log on…right? “They’re doing all they can, like removing inappropriate material but, unfortunately, there’s no way to keep them all off. It’s up to every girl to protect herself online. Nobody else can ensure her safety, not even the police,” says Dannahey.

Wouldn’t it be obvious, though, if you were talking to someone who had evil intentions? Not always. “These guys are good at it. They will be really nice and offer gifts, then casually ask for your address to send the gifts—and kids give it out. That’s the ‘grooming process’ where they put you in a comfort zone so you trust them enough that they can eventually commit a crime against you,” the detective explains. Another clue you’re chatting with a predator is if he asks questions like, “Are you home alone?” or, “Where are your parents right now?”

To pedophiles, going online to find potential victims is “not their hobby—it’s their life,” says Urie, adding, “It’s something they are serious, vigorous and persistent about. They spend hours a day developing an online persona that will appeal to a child.” And the more info you’ve put on your personal page, blogs, surveys or chatrooms, the more info they have to make you trust them online.

It’s impossible to know how many online predators exist, but Dannahey says there are more than the police can go after. What they do know is that they are usually white males from age 26 to over 40. “Online solicitations knows no boundaries,” says Detective Dannahey. “I don’t care if you’re from a rural or urban community, rich or poor. They’re looking for vulnerable kids. “Unfortunately, these crimes are usually not reported because, once kids are sexually assaulted after meeting with a stranger, they are so embarrassed and humiliated that they feel they really screwed up and their parents will kill them. What may be even scarier is that some of these guys don’t even contact you online. They just look at your personal page, and figure out who you are and where to find you.”

Despite the dangers, Dannahey is a supporter of kids using the Internet. “If you prohibit kids from using MySpace, they’ll find a more secretive way to do it. That would be even more dangerous.”

“These sites bring a lot of benefits to children,” adds Yates, “like experiencing new ways to socialize, gather information and use technology. Recently, a school shooting was actually thwarted by kids on MySpace who heard about the event that was to occur and announced it online. As a result, the information got to the proper authorities and the shooting was prevented. So a lot of good can come out of using these sites.”

Urie whole-heartedly agrees, “There is a safe way to use these sites. You just need to know how to be smart about it.”

So how do you stay smart while surfing? If you have a scary encounter online, you should immediately tell your parents, teacher or other trusted adult. Here are some rules to remember from our experts:

Never give out info. Not your real name, address, phone number, e-mail address, birthdate, school, or names of family or friends. Some sites encourage you to post certain info, but the less info that is out there in cyberspace, the less likely you’ll be harmed in any way.

Don’t offer personal details. No description of what you look like, extracurricular activities, or specifics about where you are going, when and with whom. If you do, you’re giving a predator a map of where to find you.

Never send or post photos of yourself. Your friends know what you look like, why risk revealing your identity?

Don’t answer messages from strangers. It will only encourage them. Ignore them, and they will disappear.

Never agree to meet someone you’ve met online. No excuses!

We’ll say it again: Tell your folks if you get a message that makes you uneasy. Protect yourself from being a victim. Safety in numbers, babe.

IF YOU’VE HAD A BAD CYBER ENCOUNTER...
Tell a trusted adult immediately so she or he can report it to the police and to the website’s administrators. You can also go to missingkids.com, the website for the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children, and fill out their “CyberTipline” form. The form will then be forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further investigation.

Okay so my friend let's call her jenny went onto a website she wasn't supposed to and she chatted with people on it, she lied about her last name, her city and her age. But her brother told the truth (her brother also had an account)so she was afraid that they might find her. And me & our teacher are trying to comfort her, but she's still paranoid about the situation. She needs to get rid of two accounts on two different websites, and she needs someone else to do it for her. And i'm most certainly NOT. :/ So now she needs help to do all of this.

Is there any way she can delete it, or is she not allowed to go on to delete it? It's unsafe to chat for her to chat with people she doesn't know online. You shouldn't have to get involved, but maybe you can have her tell her parents and say she won't go back on it and she could ask them to delete her accounts. She could also talk to the teacher about her problem and see if she could help delete it. Or, maybe she, the parents and the teacher could all delete it. If it's a bad site, maybe the teacher or parents can help him get rid of his account also.

Hey girl,

One of the risks of the internet is that stuff like this can happen with people you don't know. But it's ok!  First off, go onto the Skype website and learn how to block people. Once you know how to protect yourself, you won't have to be afraid to sign onto Skype again. You also know now that you actually can get requests from strangers, so you also know not to accept it if you don't know the person. Instead, block the person before even letting them connect and keep yourself safe Smile

Mod, she said she wants to tell her parents, but she wouldn't know how. So how should she tell them?

Hey girl, tell her just to talk a deep breath and tell her parents what happened. She did the right thing by removing her personal information, but she can let her parents know that she initially did give personal information away and that makes her nervous. I'm sure it won't amount to anything, there is so much stuff out there on the internet it would be unlikely someone had found the information. But talking to her parents will probably make her feel better. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. So if anything, i'm sure they would track each other down or something... And now she's going back to paranoia thinking that they'll team up, and search for her. :/ Grrrrrr! Hey girlie, if she took all her info off the site, I think she should just leave it as it is. If she didn't leave any personal info on there, it's fine if she doesn't go on it again -- in fact it's probably best! She can also see if she can get the site to delete her account!

MOD MOD MOD I've been pretty insecure lately about my body. My weight is actually perfect for my age/height and I am very happy with it but lately my stomach just looks huge. Some days it's nice and flat but then other days I look like I'm pregnant! I'm not sure if it has to do with the fact that I eat a lot, or maybe I have to improve my posture or something, I don't know. Lately I've been trying to stop eating random snacks like I always used to, and it's kind of helping but still some days I don't like the way my stomach looks. I don't want to take things too far because I don't want anorexia... but what should I do?

Hey chica, junk food can totally make you feel bloaty and unattractive. Eating fruits and veggies and drinking lots of water will make you look flatter than if you eat junk. And you'll feel like you look better too Smile

I used to have a Twitter account that was totally public and ANYONE could see it. I had over 100 followers and there were only maybe 5 that i KNEW for a fact were real. There was this one person though... I don't remember their twitter name. They asked me weird questions and ALWAYS responded to my tweets. Once, I checked their profile, and every one of their tweets was them talking to other girls. They changed their picture multiple times and it was never the same person. And whenever I posted a picture of myself they'd comment telling me how pretty I am. This person scared me for a long time. I ended up deleting my twitter (for other reasons) and now I have a Twitter account where my tweets are protected and only the people I approve of can follow me. I once went to see if that creepy person was still around but their account had been deleted. I'm very lucky that I didn't give out personal info about myself, this person was probably a predator whose identity had been discovered by one of the hundreds of girls he spoke to daily.

I think whatever god she believes in would probably want to keep her safe and keep her away from them. There's also probably no possible way for these people to find her anyway since she didn't give them any personal information. Even though she's off of the site she seems to want to still be connected to it in someway. That's something that she's going to have to work out for herself, not something you can help her with.

She cussed and stuff because she knew that would TOTALLY trick them into knowing she was a teen. (She isn't.) I'm telling her she did the right thing. Because in my eyes, i think it wasn't her really saying those things, it was like her common sense, or subconsious telling her to. Thats why she cussed. I think she did the right thing by cussing, and then she stopped cussing, and she's actually a better person now since she stopped going on there.. I can't even imagine her guilt. I'm telling her the psat is nothing, because yesterday was just yesterday. Its not the present... But she's STILL guilty and regretful. Ugh! She's so stubborn! Foot

Hey girlie, remind her that her reasons for her were to be someone she's not, not because she's a bad person. She's off the site now and it's over so there's not really much else she can do. Her safety is what's most important.

Okay so Jenny (my friend i talked about it my other comment a few comments down) has stopped going on it. I talked to her about it, and now she's regretful and very guilty. She's afraid that they might find her. Her mind sometimes tries to pray for them to find her, but she tries to make herself think about something else but sometimes she ends up thinking about what she said on there. (She cussed and was just not exactly appropriate on there) and now she's just SUPER regretful and guilty... How can I help her, or how can she help herself in this situation?... She also told me she hasn't been on there in six months. I told her they would've found her by now, but she still regrets and stuff... SO how can i help her, how can she help herself?

I'm not 100% sure what you're saying, but I'll try my best to answer! I think you're friend did the right thing by staying away from cyberspace.  But I'm kind of confused as to why she was cursing online? Sometimes, although you really want to help your friend out, sometimes they kind of just have to learn for themselves because they don't want to listen.  Make sure your friend knows how much you care about her, and her safety, and after that, there isn't much you can do!

Mod, I have a question. I'm kind of worried about my friend, she's only ten turning eleven. Let's call her Jenny. So Jenny goes on a website where you can do just about anything. Talk to people, give out your number, put up pictures, and all of that stuff. Now that I read this article, I'm scared for her. She uses a fake name on the website, lied about where she lives, and ied about her best friends's names, and her age. So I'm paranoid now, but since she lied a lot, would she be safe? And I'm not sure if she still goes on that website, but I'm just wondering.

Hey girlie, those kinds of websites can be dangerous.  She should be fine if she made everything up, but if you're worried that she's still using it talk to an adult who can talk to her about it.

some opf this is true. but not for all websites. like msn and facebook both let you choose your friends. so if you invite someone you don't know it's your own falt.

also on facebook they have safety settings on the sites too so you can make only your your frinheds can see it. plus you can even make some stuff not visble to people in your contacts too.

if your responsilble this sites aren't that bad.

Hey girls-
most of you are saying things about GL not being safe, these are some reasons it is:
1) mods do a great job to make sure all you post is completely safe that you don't post personal stuff
2) when you blow up profile pictures they are blurry, the odds of someone being able to recognize you are very low.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
also, a lot of you are saying you are careful- you may be but if a smart predator were to find you, they could trace your internet.
some tips about safety:
~if you have a web cam, cover it up with something, if someone hacks into it then they could see you doing whatever
~just because someone has pictures of themselves doesn't mean they are real (they could just find pictures to match their online description)
~maybe change a few letters in your last name and tell your true friends your facebook name.
~just because you facebook isn't supposed to be publicly viewable doesn't mean it is, people can hack past it!
NOTE: this isn't to scare you girls, you all need to be careful even on GL mods may not be able to always catch everything!
Smile happy internet surfing!
Hey babe, the key is self love and positive self talk.  It's important to have support when you're struggling with accepting yourself completely as you are.  You do not need to change. You are AWESOME exactly as you are.  Try making a list of all your accomplishments, talents, and things you are proud of.  Make a list of things you like about yourself.  It sounds weird, but it can help!  Another way to boost your confidence- try fun exercise....like Salsa dancing or Bike riding with a friend.  Do things that you feel good doing...it's not healthy to slave away on a treadmill or in the gym...that's no fun!  If you feel really low and need support, http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/08/04/HELP!2.aspx
This is a help hot line for all girls who need support in their lives.  Hang in there babe, you are strong for admitting what's going on and seeking help before things get too low.
ok so there is this site i go on a lot and its sort of like face book. i met this really nice guy on it and hes like a year older than me and i no he is not some creepy old guy because i have seen pictures of him and stuff. we have been like really good friends for a few months now and he lives like a few minutes away from me and its like on the beach. he wants to meet me someday and since he lives close to the beach i thought that if i ever did that it could be in like the summer and my family would go with me and his family too. is that a good idea or should i just never meet him in person?
Hey girl, meeting someone you met online could potentially be a very dangerous situation. Sure he has photos as a guy your age, but he could honestly be anyone. I would not go and meet him, there are WAY too many risks. You could try talking to your parents about it, but never meet this person without an adult. Even bringing you best girl friends with you could put you, and your friends, in danger. I know it may seem paranoid to think this guy is harmful, but this sort of stuff happens all the time. Good luck!
MOD? I think Twitter was designed for stalkers or something.... it encourages you to post exactly what you're doing and when, (most people I know do) and you can "follow" people-- so you know exactly what people are doing, when they're doing it! Why would they make such a silly, dangerous site?
Hey girly, sure, posting exactly what you're doing can be creepy. However, that's not all that Twitter is. Twitter is great to get news from. CNN posts breaking news on there, as do other major networks. Rather than waiting to see something on the tv, it's like a live news feed.
Eh, people tend to freak out about the internet. Like Chatroulette and Omegle are two of my favorite websites, you can video chat with random strangers it's so fun! Talking to random people, sure there was some creepers, but it really isn't a big deal at all. You all just hear stories or like 1 creeper and it makes you think everyone online is a creeper, but that's not true.
And facebook especially... there's NOTHING wrong with it. I mean, you can find out a lot about a person fro their page, but just don't add people you don't know, simple as that.
The internet can be scary, but don't think too hard about it. It really is not that big a deal.
ON facebook, there is a guy who added me as a friend. His profile said he went to my school and moved away last month. He is friends with over 50 of my friends, all of which that are boys and girls in my grade. I'm wondering if I know him but just can't recall his name or something. Should I accept his friend request?
Hey girl,
Usually, I never accept friend requests with people I don't recognize.  It's always possible (though unlikely) he could have created a fake account and friended all those people to make it look real.  But if you don't remember him, why would you want to be friends with him anyway?  There's no reason you need to keep in touch with someone you don't even know!  I'd ignore it for sure.
O_O and there are times when you meet somebody and they're actually who they are but how do you know? i have a friend who made a friend online and he's just who he appears to be, it's really nice. xD but over the summer i made a friend and .. we exchange emails and stuff and he seems really nice but i dunno if it's for real or not. of course i dont tell him anything, he only knows my name but is it still bad to make friends online?
Hey girlie,
Welcome to gl! If you want a moderator to answer your question, type MOD at the top of your post. moderators (like me) read every single post before it goes up on the website, so we will see the MOD and answer your question! You never know who you are talking to on line! While it is definitely possible for someone to be telling the truth online, be on the safe side and never give out personal info! Remember, even if people tell the truth about who they are, everyone acts differently online the only true relationship is in person!
