Fortune Telling Sleepover

Check these out, too...

  • 100 ways to have a blast this winter
  • Cupid cuties sleepover
  • Sleep like a zombie slumber party
  • 100 secrets to a super sleepover
  • Classic '90s teen movie marathon sleepover

No one knows for sure what the future holds, but you and your BFFs can have a lot of fun trying to figure it out.

We’ve got some tips for hosting a fortune telling slumber party that’ll have you and you girlies making predictions way past bedtime!

Setting the Mood

Transform your house into a mysterious fortune teller’s den with the help of lighting and decorations. Turn the lights low and use lots of candles. The flickering on the walls will be totally cool and super-spooky! Use scarves or any light fabric to cover tables and add a pretty touch to the windows. You can even drape one over a lampshade to make some colorful but dim light (just make sure the fabric is flame retardant and OK to use near something hot!). Hit up the dollar store for streamers and balloons in dark hues like black, navy blue or purple. Scatter teensy moons and stars or sparkles that'll glitter in the mysterious glow.

Dress the Part

Don’t forget to decorate yourselves, too! Get inspired by the gypsy look and have your guests get all decked out in funky garb and makeup. Some of our style suggestions? Try layers, flowing skirts, airy blouses, lots of gems 'n' jewelry, bandanas, scarves…maybe even an eye patch to really seal the deal!

Stellar Snacks

It’s not a party without some food, so set up a table with a crystal ball as the centerpiece. Any sort of white or transparent ball will work fine. Use cookie cutters in the shape of stars and moons for everything from little sandwiches to Jello jigglers. Make a big batch of punch and set it up in a mysterious cauldron. What's for dessert? Fortune cookies, of course!

Seeing the Future

For a fun activity, have your guests make and decorate their own paper fortuneteller or their very own crystal balls. You can put them to good use at the party and have them as a fun souvenir, too. For a real trip to the other side, whip out a Ouija board to summon spirits. Get a few fraidy cats in the bunch? Try calling out to the spirits of funny, make-believe characters. If you can hear me SpongeBob Squarepants, make the TV turn on and off one time!

Other neat ideas? Pick up a pack of tarot cards at a local store and take turns playing fortune teller to each friend. Or, buy a book of horoscopes, read ‘em out loud and try to make predictions based on what the ‘scopes say. Slip some homemade fortunes or predictions into balloons Have each guest pick and pop one for a fun surprise!

Dancing in the Rain

I fought back tears as I waved goodbye to my parents and younger brother. Sadness and desperation was extremely evident on their faces. I knew going away and leaving them was for the best, but the thing is, I had no desire to go. All I wanted was to have a loving family and a storybook ending. Why did this happen to me anyway? What had led me to make this frantic decision to save us all? Maybe if I hadn’t known more than I should, this wouldn’t be happening.
Many years ago, on a rainy August day, I had been bored. My mind wasn’t at ease, and all I could do was replace my thoughts with something more positive and upbeat. I had decided to go on the internet to play these silly games that were meant to “entertain” you. I don’t know how, but somewhere along the line I ended up playing this game where you had to use telekinesis to solve puzzles. Then and there, I made this vow to learn and practice supernatural abilities. I wasn’t sure why I wanted to yet; nevertheless, I had figured they would come in handy. I do believe that’s where it all started.
After about a few years of dabbling in practically every ability that existed, even ones no one has ever heard of, I met this group of people who could do what I did. They understood me, and talking to them relaxed me. I was fifteen at the time, and I didn’t have a sense of danger, so when they offered me to join their group, I accepted, gratified someone appreciated the things I was capable of doing.
I stayed with the clan for two long years, almost three. I honestly had thought they were people with good intentions, the type of people that want to assist me and others. I soon discovered this theory was wrong days before my eighteenth birthday. They had told me that as soon as someone in their clan reached adulthood, they automatically learned the clan’s greatest secret, their powers were significantly increased, and would serve a much finer purpose. You can tell why I would be thrilled, all of it really sounded amazing and delightful!
On the day of my birthday, my power wasn’t enhanced, I’m pretty sure it would’ve been, that is, if I’d accepted to do the job they wanted me to. The job everyone there did: to do horrible things to people.
Criminals, delinquents, terrorists, people who commit suicide, others who hurt themselves and others, weren’t born like this. In fact, no one was. I learned these people were immortal, that were there since the Earth was created, since man first stepped onto the land. Before they created misery, everything was beautiful and perfect and there was no despair in the world. Death existed, but people rejoiced when a loved one died because they well knew they were on their way to a better place, (and a place better than Earth at that time just had to be great)! The clan had created all of this despair upon the Earth. The Earth went from a peaceful place to a dreadful nightmare. Natural disasters, killing, racism, sadness, anger, revenge, and even more things took place. Luckily, some peacefulness still stayed intact. I guess that’s what makes everyone’s life bearable.
They had wanted me to be a part of them. I was supposed to control people’s minds to do such ghastly things. I was required to use my increased power over the elements to make tsunamis, earthquake, tornadoes, volcano explosions, things like that. I also would’ve earned the ability to control human emotions, the thing is I didn’t want to make people feel sad and horrified and afraid.
The reason why I’m crying for my family right now is because the clan had threatened to make them suffer. Not kill them; however they would make their lives impossible to live happily. The other choice was for me to have my memory erased. I wouldn’t be able to recall the group; I wouldn’t be able to remember that I could do much more things other people cannot do. Even if I wanted to relearn them by the same incident happening again, my mind would be blocked so I won’t be able to learn any new powers. I had chosen the second one with fear and agony.
Right now I’m on my way to where we all used to hang out. There I’ll forget the most precious quality about me forever and I’ll never be able to acquire it back.
Before facing total memory loss I am going to record what I learned out of this: sadness and despair, misfortune and disease, death and betrayal, none of these things can be avoided. The best you can do is try to make everything seem better and work towards a better world. Like a great friend of mine once said, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass by, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain”. She was right.
