I think I'm fat...

I'm worried about my weight. I went to my doctor for a physical and she said I was at a good weight, but I still think I'm fat. I have low self-esteem. Even my dad makes comments about by tummy! My sister is skinnier than me and I don't know what to do!

Sometimes I think about puking...on purpose. I know I shouldn't because of later effects and it's bad for you etc., but I still think about it! Girls at my school are skinnier than me and I hate it. How can I stop thinking these things?

Hey girl!

Beauty should never be based on your weight. I'm sure you're perfect and pretty just the way you are. Remember that your true gorgeousness comes from stuff ya can't physically see—like your smarts, your amazing singing voice or your ability to be a great friend. Here's how to get happy and feel confident about yourself.

Stop the self-esteem bashing

Tell your dad you don’t like it when he makes comments about your tummy. He might just be joking, but still, if he's hurting you, you need to let him know. If you don't feel comfy talking to your pops yourself, approach your mom or an aunt or older sibling who can relay the message.

Quit comparing

If your doc said that you're a healthy weight...then you are! There are always going to be girls who are skinnier than you (and I know, because I’m no stick thin gal myself). Everyone (especially girls!) comes in different shapes and size, so embrace your uniqueness. You are only going to drive yourself crazy if you constantly compare yourself to other girls, so don’t! Base your self-esteem on your accomplishments—like scoring the lead in a play, getting straight As or leading your school's food drive—not your physical appearance.

Make plans

It seems like you're super-concerned about your weight, but you need to be more concerned about your health. Purging food and starving yourself can cause fatal problems in the future (not to mention the mental toll it will take on you), so it’s important to steer clear of doing anything dangerous to lose a few pounds. Make sure your diet is well-balanced and filled with protein, fruits and veggies. Exercise regularly doing something you like to do, whether that’s running, playing soccer or dancing to your iPod. When you live a healthy lifestyle, you will feel healthy and one hundred times better about yourself. For more safe, fun tips on getting healthy, head to G-Life. And if you still feel badly about your weight, please head to a guidance counselor or trusted adult to talk about it ASAP.

C'mon get happy

The most important thing you can do to get rid of your negative thoughts is to think positive. Every time you start comparing yourself, stop, breathe and tell yourself two positive things about yourself (like how you aced your history exam or how close you are to getting a personal best in your track event). Listen to your doc about your weight, and remember, skinny doesn’t equal beautiful. The prettiest girls are the happiest girls, so keep your chin up.

Xoxo,
Liz

MOD MOD! Okay, so what is bloating and how is it caused? When I looked it up online the description matched me...my tummy is big and I KNOW I'm not pregnant [I've never done it] and I don't have a lot of fat anywhere else but my tummy. The solutions to bloating online were all for really old people [make sure your dentures are in correctly! What?] so is it possible that I'm a little bloated for whatever reason or what? How do I get skinnier and be healthier? I don't want to risk my life by starving myself, but my best friend lost 20 pounds in a week from doing it...then she started eating again and shes fine. I don't want to do that but I want to be skinny. What should I do?

Hey girl!  Bloating can happen for lots of reasons.  Sometimes PMS causes it, or eating lots of salty foods - basically, it means your bod is holding some extra water.  Drinking lots of water can help.  I totally understand not wanting to starve yourself - it's important to take care of your body!  As long as you are eating a variety of nutritious foods, and doing some physical activity you enjoy, you should be at a weight that's good for your bod.

MOD!
okay so, i'm 11 almost 12 and im about 118 poundd and im 4'11" to 5'. i have zero confidence and a really low self esteem. ever since i was about 4, my family members would call me fat, chubby, big or even obese. in school, a lot of people would joke me and be mean. i never had more than 5 friends before 3rd grade. now; i'm in 5th grade. im still called fat, and it really hurts my feelings when people even dont say it directly. i do have a thicker skin and can tolerate it from some people easier.

Hey girl, you need to believe in yourself. It doesn't matter what people at school say or think.  People who bully are just insecure with themselves and feel the need to make other people feel badly about themselves because they're unhappy inside.  You're not fat.  You are beautiful just the way you are.  We all have different body shapes and sizes! Embrace what you have!  Try talking to a guidance counselor at school or a trusted adult about how you're feeing and get some advice for combatting the bullies. Stay confident and true to who you are. good luck!

MOD MOD MOD
My friend has always been very tall and skinny.
We used to joke about it with her and she wouldn't brag about her skinniness or anything but she did accept it.
About six months ago she started complaining that she was fat. At first we thought she was kidding, but then we realized she was serious. We've been telling her that that's ridiculous, her weight is really healthy but now she's starting to obsess over huge diet plans and we're worried she may be getting anorexic. I'm really scared about this! How can we help her without ruining our friendship?

I suggest you and close friends of hers sit her down and talk to her about it. Ask her why she thinks shes so fat. If you all talk to her you may be able to switch her thinking. Good luck! xoxo kerra

MOD MOD MOD: The last sentence of this article is "The prettiest girls are the happiest girls..." Are you saying that you have to be pretty to be happy? It must be an innocent mistake but you may want to check it out and fix it because it could give girls, like me, the wrong idea. Okay, that's all I had to say. Keep being radical! Smile

Hey babe, I think what Liz is means is that the happiest girls are the prettiest girls, not that being pretty makes them happy but being happy makes them pretty... which is really true in my experience! I know girls who have great bodies and perfect hair, but I don't think of them as pretty because they're so negative and unhappy all the time. A smile is always the number one thing guys notice about you!

xoxo Allie
