Do you need to see a gynecologist?

Check these out, too...

  • Please make my nose stop bleeding!
  • Will my yeast infection go away by itself?
  • Why do I wet my undies after I go to the bathroom?
  • My throat's all phlegm-y!
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
Find out now…

Lotsa girls are wary of the gyno. But Dr. Endrika Hinton, a gynecologist at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, says, “You can see a gynecologist any time you’re having problems, but go on a routine basis starting at age 16. This doesn’t mean you have to have a pelvic exam, especially if you are not sexually active.”

So do you need to go? If you answer yes to one or more of these questions, it’s time to make an appointment.

Are you having sex or thinking about it?

Are you over 16 and don’t have your period?

Is your period preventing you from doing what you want to do (super-painful, too heavy, etc.)?

Have you missed your period for more than four months in a row?

Do you have symptoms that could mean a vaginal infection (itching, off-color discharge, odor, etc.)?

Have stuff you want to discuss with a gyno?

MODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMOMODMODMODMODMODMOD Is it possible to NOT have your period? And when does your period stop? My sisters both had their periods around 11-12 years old, and I am almost 12, should I expect it?

Hey girl. Your period can come at anytime, but if it doesn't come by 16 then you should see a doc. It is possible to have very irregular periods, but healthy women have them. Your period will stop somewhere after you are 45-50 years old.

Ugh I am one of the only three girls in my grade who does not have boobs. Literally everyone else has boobs and you are probably wondering how I know this, but it's like everyone else does and you began to realize it. People have told me I had a pretty face but I'm flat so thats why guys don't go out with me. And I know this is true.
Why don't I have boobs ? My mom and sister got boobs at twelve and thirteen, and I'm turning thirteen in April. Why me ?

Hey girlie. If guys are dating you because of your boob size, then trust me, those are not the boys you want to be dating anyway. Is you physical appearance the only thing that matters? Absolutely not! You want someone who likes you for you. Your personality, your thoughts, your morals and values--that is what matters. Trust me, I understand. I have never had big boobs but honestly, I've always liked having small boobs. Girls with bigger boobs have to deal with so many inappropriate comments from boys and have to worry that guys are only attracted to boobs than them. So flaunt what you have--LOVE YOUR BODY. There is nothing more beautiful than the belief that you are beautiful. Some things you cannot change so you just go with it. Confidence is key. ; )

MODMODMOD! What do they do during a pelvic exam? How do you put in a tampon. Doesn't it hurt sticking it up there? Also, when will I get my period? Ive been having discharge since February, not really having bad acne, and im starting tog get bigger boobs where theres a bump under the breast. Plz help! When will I get my period?

Hey girlie, for tampon advice go here http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/10/08/How-To-Use-Tampon.aspx. There's no way to tell when you'll get your period so if you think you're having signs just be prepared. During a pelvic exam they just take a few swabs and check to make sure everything looks okay down there. They're uncomfortable, but they're quick and painless.

hey! well you really only need to go to a gynocologist sometime after you start your period. Check out odor eliminating products from the drugstore like Vagisil to nix the smell. good luck!

MODMODMOD my periods late and i was reg. at first.. ?

Hey girly girl! If you're not having sex, then you most likely have nothing to worry about. Periods can be irregular for the first few years, and even after for some girls. If you've been more active lately, are stressed, or are eating poorly, then that can all factor into your period. However, if you are sexually active and are late, then you could be preggers.

MOD MOD MOD ok so my friend just got her period and i am really jealous and deressed i thought i would be first. How can i stop being sad and jealous. Also i know you cant really tell for sure but so you think i am going to get my period soon? I have had boobs for 2 years hair in all the plces for at least 2 years and discharge for over a year. I have cramps a back ache a lot of zits mood swings and craving. Do you think i am close to my period how close. Im almost 4 and weigh around 87-90 pounds is that enough. I have very smakk clums of brown stuff (blood maybe) with dried up flakes. Of bloodish stuff with a couple tiny but noticeable red spots. Os that spotting? Please answer! Pleas erase everything up to here. Thanks

Hey girlie, to stop being jealous and depressed just remember that people grow and mature at different times and no one can control when and how fast they mature. You have to accept that and be patient. It sounds like your period is coming soon.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!
I was wondering if you dont go to the gynecologist for a pelvic exam them what do you go for? Also what is the difference between your regular doctor and a gynecologist?

Hey girlie, the gynecologist focuses on your private area. While a regular doctor can answer standard questions, a gynecologist has the tools to look closer at things. The main reason for going is a pelvic exam, but if you have a problem that doesn't require one you could have a visit without one.

Hey girlie,

I don't think it's all that weird Smile Just because the hosts of a party are in high school doesn't mean you have to be a certain age to go, especially if it's a bigger party where lots of people were invited. My high school actually went from 7th grade-12th grade so some of our high school parties had 11 and 12 year olds at them too!

Hey girl, you might want to check out this article about PMS:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/07/23/Banish-PMS-Forever.aspx.  Headaches can be a sign of PMS, but I'm not sure about diarrhea - it's definitely not as common.  The good news is, if it is, then it will be over once your period stops!  I would definitely check in with a doc though if it keeps up, or if PMS symptoms keep you from doing everyday activities.  xoxo

beccalou14, You only have to see a gyn for those reasons or if you mom wants you to go. If you are going to start having sex or even just thinking about it you should go and if there are any problems down there that is another reason. One thing I learned is that you go to the gyn for stuff like birth control but if its just a physical for sports you can go to a regular doctor but they still may want to look down there.

People who I know who have gone says it isnt that bad, and the worst part was worrying about it.

Hey girl,

Just keep a pad and a change of underwear in your backpack/locker/desk, in case you head to the bathroom and notice you've started!  That way, you'll know you're prepared for anything Smile if you need more time to clean up and deal with your first day of your period, just head to the nurse's office. okay so im 15, healthy and i started my period when i was 11. Its been fairly regular and im on my third day now.
So i just took a shower and while i was in there i bled a little but as usual, but then this blood clot came out and it was like 4 inches long. I usually get little ones in my pad but this was huge. After it i felt sick and a little pain below my waist. but that might just be because i saw this giant blood clot.
so is this normal?? plz help. Im not very close with my mom, we don't talk about this stuff so i dont wanna bring it up if its not a problem.
THANK YOU!!!

Blood clots are totally normal- not matter how big.  If you are having huge blood clots frequently, you might want to make a doctors appointment just to make sure that everything is ok! And than pain in your stomach, was probably just from seeing the blood clot- I mean, they are pretty gross...

I think if you wear a panty liner in a pool it might unstick itself if it gets saturated with water. If you don't think the discharge would be noticeable or if it's very light, you might be OK without anything. I have heard you aren't supposed to wear a tampon for just discharge, though.

Hey girl, it could've been the beginning of your period, just a really light one. I wouldn't be nervous about it. But if you are, you could always ask you mom if you need to see a doctor. When I clicked your profile, it says "not publicly visible," which means its probably something with the privacy settings. When you sign in online, click "my profile," it's the list next to the photo of the newest issue, then you should be able to fix it and edit your profile.

Hey girly, your back pain is probably just cramps, and nothing to worry about! If it's really really bad though, you might want to talk to a doc about it! A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in treating women!

Hey girlie, there is nothing you can do but wait it out, it'll stop itching. The only way to trim is with scissors or a razor and I think you're going to have the same result.

Hey girl, there's really nothing to be afraid of about the gynecologist. It's a little awkward to go, but it's totally fine and all women have to start eventually going. You usually don't go to see a gyno until you're in your late teens, but it's nothing to worry about or stress over, I promise. If you're still concerned talk to your mom about how you're feeling. I don''t wanna use one and my mom doesn't use them so i don't really wanna ask for one either. Thanks!

Hey! It's best to wear a tampon when you swim but if you really don't want to, a small panty liner works fine. When you're in water it often stops or slows the flow but it's better to be safe than sorry! Good luck!

My period is about to end, I think it stopped because there is no blood on the pad. Is it safe to wear a tampon just incase? Or should I just wear a thin pantyliner?

Just go with a pantyliner.  It can be really painful to put in and take out a tampon when you don't have your period because the blood acts as a lubricant to make it slide in more smoothly.

Hey girl, taking a tampon out can be uncomfortable, but the key is to relax your muscles as best as you can. Take deep breathes and don't clench up. If it is stuck, you may not have had your flow heavy enough to easily take it out. Talk to your mom or a trusted adult to seek help as soon as possible.  For more info on your flow..check this out: http://www.girlslife.com/hub/periods-period.aspx

Yeah, the gyno does look down there and do a quick exam if you go for a check-up. It's not pleasant, but it's really short and they are really used to doing that to a bunch of girls every day.

Hey girl! Most females don't go to the gyno until they are 17 or 18. Unless you are having serious issues with your period, you probably don't have to go. Remember, it takes periods a year or so to regulate so some may be longer than others.

Hey girlie,

You could, but you could also have discharge for up to two years before you even get your period!  It's a sign that it's coming, but NOT that it's coming very soon.  Just make sure you're prepared - bring pads and tampons on the trip with you, just in case.  There are instructions in every tampon box on how to put one in and we also have advice on that too:

 http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx

Just remember to relax!  But don't worry over the next two weeks about getting your period - just having discharge for a little while doesn't automatically spell "period time."  And plus, if you get it, you'll be prepared!

If you go to the gyno, they probably will just talk to you about what's going on with your body because your only 13.  They most likely will not do an actual exam.  Usually, they just want to make sure everything is normal with your developing bod!

If you're willing to try a tampon, I would recommend it because it makes getting your period A LOT easier.  But if you're not ready yet, no fear!  You can wear a pad in a bathing suit, just change it right after you hop out.

today I finally mastered getting a tampon in!! I was very excited that I got the "light" one in because I have tried sooo many times and failed. I also had a physical at the doctor today and I was glad that I wouldn't have to be uncomfortable in a pad while I was there. But instead of be comfortable, my tampon leaked!!! It was nerve-racking enough to be at the doctor, and then to have to put in another tampon from my moms purse that was "super" in was hurendous!!! I was freaking out in the bathroom because I couldn't get the bigger one in right and I was crying!! To top that all off, I had to give a urine sample in a cup for them to test! I couldn't do it because I was psyching myself out!! I need to try tampons again but this was a bad experience. I want to be able to go swimming and enjoy my summer- period or no period!! Please help me overcome my fear and try using perhaps a "regular" or "super" tampon. Thank you so much!!!!

Hey girly, That does sound like a bad experience! The good news is that if you did it one time, you can definitely do it again. Try using lite ones for awhile just until you get used to it, and wear a pantyliner with it if you're worried about leaks. Using a regular one will be easier than a super!

Does the gyno ask a lot of questions when it comes to your bf and what you have done with him or are doing with him sexually? Because one of my friends said that they all did that but then one said they dont ask questions like that.
And if they do, do they ask them when your mom is in the room?

Hey girl, all doctors are different but generally speaking they do ask you a lot of question about your sexual history because it is important to their exam. I believe your parent does not have to be in the room if you don't want them to be in there.

Hey! Sitting down does slow the flow, but it should start up again after you stand for a while. Everyone has a different flow so yours might just be lighter. You shouldn't worry about it, you'll become more used to it in the next few months, then you'll know what to expect.

Hey! Yeah, it's true, but don't worry. Doctors are very good at what they do and you are their first priority. You'll just experience a little pressure and, honestly, it's not the most comfortable thing it the world. Just think of it like getting a shot: waiting's the worst, but then it's over.

What happens during a guyno appointment? Like what do they do??

A gyno just wants to make sure everything is doing what it's supposed to do.  They could be checking that your period is regular, that your developing correctly (boobs, hair, and all), hormones...they just want to check that everything is OK.  At the appointment, they will just do a full body exam.  They usually ask you to take all of your clothes off, and wear a hospital gown- which might be super awkward at first, but they're doctors- IT'S THEIR JOB! Think about if you need to pay a visit to the gyno, and if so, don't be nervous, they are there to help!

MOD MOD MOD Whenever I ask my dad for spending money when i am going away with the church for the weekend, I ask for 20 dollars and he gives me 50. I know this might be weird, but I always want to give him money back because I will only waste it on junk, but he won't let me. I feel really bad about taking his money all the time, but he doesn't seem to care. I know he is supposed to give me money and all, but I still feel bad. Why do I always feel bad? Is this normal? XOXO, Selena

Hey girl, That's not bad that you feel bad - it shows you are responsible, and care about spending your dad's money wisely!  If you've offered to give it back and he says keep it, that's totally fine.  Maybe you could think about having a place to save money in your room (or open a savings account), and when you get money, put a bit of it away in savings.  That might help you feel like you aren't wasting it all on "junk."  xoxo

I really do not want to get it again unexpectantly after school starts. Also, I absolutely hated wearing pads, is it okay to use tampons even if you are not going swimming and its only your second? thx!

Hey girl,

Well a flow is supposed to last around four days and come every 28 (this is how long a cycle lasts).  But, when a girl first gets her period, it can def be random and unpredictable.  That's totes normal, though, so it's important not to stress about it!  XOXO

My mom got her period when she was 8.I am 12 and haven't gotten it yet. Should I see a gynecologist?

Hey girl, you could try seeing a gynecologist if you're concerned about it and have gone through other signs of puberty (developed chest, hair under your arms and down there, mood swings, acne, etc).  I would also try and find out how old your aunts were.  If the rest of the females in your family got theres at a later age, then your mom may just be a rarity.  Plus, our mothers' age is just a good guesstimate- it's not 100% accurate.

Hey girl, honestly, my mom does the same thing. I think for bod stuff you should still talk to her and ask she not tell anyone else. If she does, remember, it's just her friend and chances are, she's talking about her daughter too. For stuff like guys? Try a trusted aunt, sibling or a friend's mom. Do you know how to put in a tampon?  If you do, then you're good to go!  If you wear pads, you can still go, but be careful.  Don't skip out on wearing one.  Just wear shorts over your bathing suit bottoms and figure out a way for the pad not to show.  You can either stay out of the water and still have fun, or wear your shorts in the water, too.

Because you just recently got your period, it is irregular because your body is still getting used to all of these changes.  Plus, you play sports which can change your cycles because of how active you are.  Don't be nervous, your period will become more regular once your body gets used to all of these changes!

so I'm kinda tired of wearing pads to bed and I want to wear a tampon to bed so I don't have to worry about the blood getting on my underwear.... So, if I go to bed at like 10-10:30 and wake up at 8 in the morn (11hrs) will I b fine and not get TSS? I know it's okay to wear tampons to bed but I want reassurance ..... Isn't it that u shouldn't wear it for longer than 15 hrs?

Hey girl, I think you should talk to your mom and find out what time frame she feels is safe for you. Typically to be safe it should not be left in for more than eight hours.

(p.s both my parents started puberty late at 14)

Hey babe,

Sometimes, people who have a low body weight/small frame do start puberty slower than others in the "average" range.  But usually this has to be pretty drastic - I really wouldn't worry about your situation!  Girls mature anywhere from 9-16 years old really, so you still have plenty of time for it to happen.  You know your body is starting off normal with the discharge, so just relax and let it happen naturally.  If you're worried, you can always chat with your doctor about it to put your mind at ease Smile

Hey girl, Every body is different, even within the same family.  As long as your doc says you're healthy, and you are showing other signs of development, there's probably nothing "wrong" with you.  You might grow more in the future, but for now, try not to compare to others, and remember your body is beautiful, no matter what your bra size!

Hey girl, I know this situation could potentially be awkward but don't let it get to you. Lets assume the worst case scenario and she was at a sleepover and they were pulling a prank on you, the fact is they're all girls and if they haven't gotten their period they will soon so it's really not that funny or interesting of a prank. I'd stay confident and brush it off. If those girls are so mean to do something like that they really have too much time on their hands and aren't cool at all. Relax, you were honest and tried to help her out, maybe she really needed your advice. Stay cool and confident you'll be totes fine! Good Luck!

is discharge a bad thing? why does it happen?

Hey girlie,

Nope, discharge is NOT a bad thing.  In fact, it's totally normal!  And it isn't just a pre-period thing - you can get a little discharge anytime!  We actually get it because of secretions from glands in our vagina/cervix, so it happens to almost every girl.  The only time you have to be worried is if your discharge isn't clear, white or creamy yellow.  If it's any other color or ends up being especially smelly, you should let someone know.

I've tried Nair but it doesn't work well for me. How much should be there before i shave??

Hey girlie,

As long as you go slow, use a good shave gel, and use a new razor, you most likely won't cut yourself.  I shave my underarms every day, even when it's just little stubble!  Shaving takes a little while to get used to (so if you cut yourself, don't get discouraged - I still cut my legs every so often!), but I think you'll be fine whenever you decide to try it!

Unlike the other girls i know that are allowed, my hair is very very, VERY dark, long and thick which for me is more noticable and embarassing. But no matter how much i ask, begg or try to convince her, she keeps saying no. Help !

Hey girl!  Explain how you're really responsible, and that you realize when you shave your hair will grow back thicker, but you would feel more comfortable in your skin and you're mature enough to keep up with the shaving once you start. Let her know how embarrassed you are, and make sure to keep your cool, stay calm, and try not to sound whine-y when you talk with her.   If you sound more mature and sure of yourself, you'll sound more responsible and she'll be more likely to agree. 1.I'm Going on an overnight tour on the 10th of june. My period Usaually comes on the 17th. My friend told me it comes a few days earlier and were jumping in water so will i have ot wear a tampon
2.Oh I have hair down there and when i wear a swimming suit you can see it what do i do?

Hey girl! I would keep an extra one in your bag, but I wouldn't wear it unless you have your period. So be prepared with the necessary products if you do get it on your trip. Also, you can get a self waxing kit that may be the best solution. If you feel comfortable asking your mom, then definitely do that. You can buy the self waxing at any drugstore.

1.I have been getting a lot of discharge latley I have been getting it for almost 2 years. Will it stop when my period starts? When will it stop?
2.My mom told me I can't have a tampon until I'm 16,but when I swim I have to wear them.Do they hurt getting them in there? Is it uncomfterable?
I am 12 and need answers!

Hey girl, it would probably be better to ask a doctor that one, I'm not really sure. Sorry. As for the second question. No, it should not hurt. We have a few articles on this website telling you how to use them and addressing a few other problems. Maybe this will help: http://www.girlslife.com/hub/periods-period.aspx

I have discharge everyday and I am starting to get tons of pimples ( I dont know if that is puberty or cause Im sweating from all the heat.) My Mom got her perid when she was 14 and my sister did when she was my age (12) also if Im about to go swimming and I get my period for the first time, is it okay to use a tampon???

Don't worry. That is completely normal for a teenage girl going through puberty. Yes, you can totally wear tampons when you're swimming.

Hey girl, she means that the day your period starts in the month put a mark on your calender. Then mark each day you have it until your period stops that month. Then next month, or whenever you next get your period, mark it again on your calender.

Hey girl, every woman has their own preference, so try them and see which you like better. The plastic and cardboard material is just the applicator, and it won't stay in your body so either material won't harm you. Just see what you like best! Good luck!

So now I decided to try waxing “down there” but before I am going to I heard that you get red or bumps down there for a few days after you wax it. Is that true? If so how long does the redness or bumps last and is there a certain cream or something for the bumps/redness because I have seen a cream for them in places like Rite Aid. Should I get the cream? Thanks for your help I really appreciate it! Smile

Hey girl, yeah the bumps are annoying. - i would try neosporin or eucerin. they help a lot with irritated skin.

Hey Girl!

There is no set time for a girl to get her period.  Some girls get it at 9 some get it at 15! If you want to feel somewhat prepared, talk to one of your sisters or your mom about how you would like to buy pads and be ready for it.  Also, ask them what they experienced the first time they got their period.  It's not awkward==every girl has to go through this Smile Good luck!!

Hey girl!  I know physicals can be way nerve-wracking, but it helps if you remember that your doc has done lots of them before, so he'll be totally cool.  This article explains what the physical is like:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/04/09/what-is-a-physical.aspx.  You could check with your mom, but I don't think you need to cancel.  And even if you feel awkward, it should be okay around your bf - there is no way they will be able to tell, so if you just act calm, it should be alright!  xoxo

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD!!! Sorry, just remembered another question. I have had my period for about 6 months, and the shortest it has been is 8 days. The thing is, it's only been that short once. Usually it is 10-13 days long!!! Is this normal? It was 13 days for two or three months in a row, then it came late, and now idk how long it will be, but I've already been on it for 8 days!! Is thirteen days normal when you haven't had it for over a year yet? Thank you so much for your help! Love, PhotographyGirl

According to this article:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/07/23/003-Period-Advice.aspx, about 2 to 8 days is normal for a period.  Still, it can be different for everybody, so I would definitely check in with your doc.  They can double-check that everything is a-okay.

Hey babe,

That basically means that the dog is on their period, so to speak - it's "that time of the month" where they can get pregnant with puppies.  It only happens like twice a year, but most dogs start it after about 6 months of age.  And nope, if your dog is fixed she won't go into heat or have any puppies Smile

And do you think I might get my period soon?

Hey Girl, sounds like you're growing into a healthy young lady! I'm not sure if you're going through puberty but it sure sounds like that could possibly whats going on. Every girl get's their period at different times; your period is very personal and is an experience that each girl has to deal with as an individual. Some girl will develop early than others. It's a process that nobody can truly predict but that is truly unique and different for each person so you're not wierd if you get it early or late. Good Luck!

This morning I woke up (apparently at 6 because my dads' eyes were open and he told us when we were all awake) with excruciating pain on my right side. It felt like forever but probably was only 5 min. It wouldn't go away, I have never hurt like this before. I couldn't stand or anything. Even laying there was extremely painful. I haven't told my parents because they're kinda mad at me right now. Do you know what that was? I'm not sure but I don't think that was cramps. Thank you!

Hey girl, no worries some young girls feel pain when they insert a tampon. Every girl's body is different so using tampons will feel differently for each girl. But if you feel pain while wearing a tampon that could mean you're inserting it incorrectly, and not that your body does something different. Here's some information about how to avoid pain with tampons: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx . Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD! I heard once that some things start and stop when you get your period. Like your perscription for glasses/contacts stop changing so much if you wear them and your breasts grow faster and then basically stop. I also heard you don't grow much taller. Is it all true?

Hey, Girl! Sorry for the “stock” message. We’re psyched you’re here but since this is a super busy time, mods aren’t able to answer personal advice or contest questions. We’re approving your comments now so the girls can start offering feedback right away! If you still have questions, please come back, we’re happy to help…or just let the other chicas answer now! MOD MOD MOD!!!! This is going to sound really weird because everyone always tells me I don't want my period, but now I'm getting nervous I never will and if I don't i can't have a child, right? I'm 14 and my mom AND my sis got their periods when they were 12, I'm actually about to turn 15! It's really awkward because whenever I ask my mom she just says, "it still hasn't happened, well don't worry too much I'm sure its fine." Is it every going to come, do I need medicine or something?

Hey babe, go to the doctor to make sure everything is okay.  Girls who are very active or have low body fat indexes may have a harder time getting their periods.  Don't worry! Your doctor will be able to help you understand what's going on.  You will get it eventually Smile

Getting our periods is one of the biggest days in our whole life. Its one of those things we all go through just at different times and it shouldnt be a negative thing but I know it changes everything, it did for me.

And NO!, using tampons doesnt cause us to loose our virginity. And its not a stupid question like some people think, because using tampons do cause us to insert things and be more aware of what is going on down there, but its still not the same as having sex.

Hey girl! Count 28 days from when you last had your period. That should be a good "predictor" of when your period will come next. Of course, it's not always accurate but it should give you an idea. Hope that helps!

Hey girl! A good way to predict when your next period will come is to count 28 days from when you last got your period. Your next period should come around then, give or take a few days. And it's completely normal for all those things to happen when your period comes!

Hey girl,

It depends what the situation looks like. If it is just discolored for a day or two, I don't think it is anything too serious. However, if it continues like this you should at least call your doctor's office and see what they say. They're the medical experts so they'll tell you exactly what to do and if you need to come in.

I told my best friend when we walking home from school and she looked at me like I was an alien. What do I do! Reply before I call 911!

Hey girl,

Calling 911 isn't necessary at all, so don't worry. But yellow or green colored discharge is abnormal, so you should visit your doctor. So try getting an appointment sometime this week to see if they can check you out, but don't call 911...it isn't too serious!

Hey girl,

From what I know, they usually say you should start seeing a gynecologist when you turn 18 (unless you begin being sexually active before that). But if you are not, 18 would be a good time to begin going.

Hey babe, I know what you mean.  Have you seen the movie "mean girls", it's a part of schools and cliques- having the popular girl and the little group that follow her around. It doesn't make much sense, but it does go away when people mature and grow up.  You're more mature than the others who still don't realize how ridiculous it is to worship someone bases on their looks/popularity.

Hey girl,

Most likely, the doctor will just take a look "down there" for any inflammation or abnormal discharge.  She will also probably take a sample to test whether or not it's a yeast infection.  It's nothing to worry about!  It'll feel weird at first to have someone seeing/touching between your legs, but it'll be over super quick.

MODMODMOD I started having the signs of getting my period (over and under eating, mood swings, etc) when I was 9, I'm 11 now. Should I be getting my period? I know most people get it around 12 but I started having the signs around 9 and all (I think I just repeated that twice! haha)

hey girl! check out our periods- period section there's TONS of info, but all girls are different. Development of hair and breasts are also some signs to watch for, but it might take a few years even after those signs!

What happens if you don't get your period by the time you are 16 or 17. All of these periods, period pages say you are supposed to see a gynecologist. What does the gynecologist do though if you don't get it by 16 or 17?

Hey babe! This happened personally for me, and the gynecologist can help find out the reasoning for why you haven't gotten your period.  Often they can give you medicine to help you get your period or suggest alternatives like gaining weight or going on the pill (our bodies may not be getting our periods because they lack hormones and the pill contains these hormones).  Doctors know best!

Mod mod mod Someone said if you use a tampon you lose your virginity. Is that true?

Hey girl, some people feel that a girl is no longer pure if she uses a tampon, but that is an extremely old fashioned thought. Lots of people use tampons, and the only way to lose your virginity is to have sex. Tampons have nothing to do with it.

MOD MOD-- Hey mods! I was just wondering if there is any danger in putting in a tampon if you haven't gotten your period yet. I just want to learn how to do it before I get it so I am prepared. Thanks

Hey girl! It isn't really a good idea to wear a tampon if you don't need to just yet. I know you want to practice, but experts don't really recommend wearing a tampon if you don't have your period yet.

poohbearbee, Its never to young to go but usually you only need to start going to the gyno when you start getting problems down there or you are planning on starting to have sex and get on birth control. Other than that we can still go the regular doctor until then. I have friends going to the gynecologist for all of the reasons so I get to hear what they go through.

K so my period has been totally irregular!! I got my first period November 24, 2009. I missed december, and got it on january 4. Then i got one Febuary fourth, and one the last week in Febuary. I didn't ever get one in march, and i havn't gotten one so far in April. Is this normal? I am a bit freaked that something is wrong with me!
Thanks so much,

Hey girl, it is normal for it to be really irregular when you first get it. If it continues like this for too long you could always talk to a doctor.

So I asked my mom if I could try tampons and she was like "absolutly not". Do you know why she may have said no? And do you have any tips on getting rid of cramps??? Thanks!!!!

Hey chica,
Hmm, I'm not exactly sure why she said no.  The only way to find out is to ask her!  Ibuprofen and heat pads are great ways to relieve some of the pain from cramps.  Believe it or not, exercise helps too!

If your period is still irregular, is it normal for it to start a week and a half late, last 9 days, and then get brown discharge and cramps (like normal a few days before a period starts again) 8 days later???? Thanks! Smile

Hey girlie,

This sounds like your period is all over the place!  Some months are more irregular than others due to stress or diet changes, but just keep an eye on it.  It should straighten out after this month and be somewhat "normal" again next month.  If it acts funny again, try calling up your doc and asking about it just to be safe Smile

MOD! I've had my period for about 2 years and its fairly regular with maybe a week or two of deviation sometimes. But this month its been about 6 or 7 weeks since my last period. Is that normal?

Hey babe,

It's normal for our periods to be irregular all the time, especially when they are first starting (yes, even 2 years is "just starting" - you'll have your period for decades!).  Usually, we have about 4 weeks in between periods... so, if it goes past 8 or 9 weeks (like, you've skipped two periods), I would just call up your doc to be safe.

Hey girl, first of all, take a deep breath. Your friend didn't mean to hurt you; she was just nervous. Also know a period isn't worth losing a friendship over and it doesn't matter when your period starts. Every girl is different and there is no magic time or age your period has to start to be normal. Have a heart-to-heart with this guy. He gave you his e-mail because you asked for it and you're friends -- nothing more. That said, it's way uncool he spread your personal business around like that and made judgements. Remember, this guy knows less about periods than you. Have a talk with him and explain that honestly, you did get your period but it's a personal thing and completely normal. Ask him as a friend to please respect your privacy.

It's pretty normal to get clear-ish discharge before your period, and it's also pretty normal to not have it all the time.  As long as you are healthy, neither of those things should affect when you get your period.  xoxo

Hey girl,
You're right - the experts say clear-ish discharge usually comes about 6 months to a year before a girl gets her period.  Of course, every bod is different, so it might work a little differently for some girls.  If you're having any concerns, I would check with your doc - they can let you know what's normal.  xoxo

I keep getting this white-colored stuff in my panties and I don't know what it means. It smells weird and my mom said it was just discharge and to not worry about it...but...is my period close behind the white-stuff? Please help! Thanks!

hey girl! It might just be discharge or it could mean that you are getting your period soon so just be ready,

ugh I'm really scared!!! Today I tried tampons for the first time and I did it twice. The 1st one was bad because it didn't go in fully (like 2/3 was hanging out) then it got painful to take it out. I did it again like 2 seconds later and it went in really far but not far enough. It hurt sooo badly that I started crying and had to asks my mom wat to do (sooo embarrassing)!!! Now I'm really scared because I want to try them again. It's the 1st day of my period (I read on a gl article that The first few days of ur period are the best for tampons because you produce a type of lube for them to go in). Would it be best to clean my self before I put the tampon in or after when I'm all dry? (sorry that's gross!!) also do you have to wear a panti liner with a tampon?? Thanks!!!

hey girl! You can wear a panti liner with a tampon just to be safe and you could clean before you try again.

I ask my mom what she thought and she said it was gonna be irregualer 4 like 2years. I have discarge and it smells wierd and some times it's white and has a little yellow sometimes,(ewwwww) and idk but I'm freaked out. I'm scared because my period is irregular!!!! Please asmswer this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm freaked out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey girly, it's totally normal, like your ma said, to be irregular. And discharge is totally normal too. So, you can relax now, there's nothing wrong with being irregular. If you really truly are worried, then make an appointment with the doc, or school nurse.  Smile

Yeah it sounds like youre going to get it very soon, so be prepared. Aslo about the discharge, yellows nota very normal color. I suggest you see if it persists and then tell your doctor about it if it does. Good luck! xoxo kerra

My last period was Feb. 26 through March 3. Last week Tuesday (March 23rd) through Thursday (Marh 25th) I had cramps. On Friday I think I started my period, but I don't know. I has been mostly brown discharge with little amounts of blood here and there. Do you think this was my period?

Hey girl,

That was most likely your period. Sometimes periods can be heavy one month and very light the next, so it sounds like you just had one month that was a little less than normal, but it shouldn't be any need to worry. If for some reason you have any other problems, it's best to check with your doctor!

MOD MOD MOD******* I have had my period 7 mos, alomst 8, and summer is coming up. I'm really nervous to try tampons but I feel like I'll be really missing out on the awesome summertime! I'm also really nervous because I am going to a Girl Scout day camp this summer which involves a lot of swimming, and according to my menstrual calendar, I'll have "it" that week. =[ Can you please help me with this "situation" (and no, I'm not talking about Jersey shore! haha)?? Please, if you wouldn't mind, don't post a link for me to follow. =] I'd like a real answer. =]]] Thanks!!

Hey girl!  I know it can be really difficult to try tampons for the first time.  It's just going to take some practice and getting used to, so give yourself some time to do that on a day when you're on your period but not going to be swimming or being active.  I know you don't want a link, but sometimes it can be really helpful to read up (or ask a doc) for some tips on doing it the right way!  Best of luck, xoxo

I did miss any, but now i havent had it for a month, im kind of worried. my friend is a little more comfortable talking to her mom about her period. but im not, but my friend said i might get my period 2 times next month. will that possibly happen? cause im afraid it wont!

Hey chicky!
From what I know, it's pretty normal to be irregular the first year you get your period.  Also, things like stress or exercise can sometimes make you miss a month.  Still, if you're worried, I would definitely talk to an adult you trust (even your friend's mom!) or a doc.  They can double check to make sure everything is a-oh-kay.  Good luck!

Hey girlie,

You don't have to tell him if you don't want to.  Instead, why don't you try NOT to be cranky?  Just because we have the tendency to become emotional or annoyed before our periods doesn't mean we HAVE to be that way!  Next time you're feeling yourself getting really cranky, remember what he told you and try to put on a happy face.  It can be as simple as not snapping at him once when you normally would.  Gradually, you'll get better at it!

Hey girlie,

Do you have a coat room? You can leave pads in your backpack and then run to grab one before you hit the bathroom.  Or you can always ask your school nurse if you can leave some there - it might be out of the way, but if you can't keep them in your pocket there are definitely still options!

Ok so here are my questioms: how can i stop comparing myself to my besties 2: how can i ask my mom to go to voctoriaa secret and buy me bigger pretty non cheap bras

Hey girl, its natural to compare yourself with other people. Just don't worry too much about it when you do, everyone is different. Just ask you mom if she'll go with you to Victoria's Secret to get some new bras because you hear they last longer and you need a bigger size. If she doesnt want to go with you, maybe you can go with some friends and buy one on your own.

Is this a sign that I'll be getting my period soon? If so, how long do you think it will be approximately?

Hey girl! Those are def signs of a period coming! It's really hard to tell when exactly your period's coming - every girl is different and your body's changing! I'm sorry I don't have a definite answer for you: experts say that a lot of girls get their period at 12 years old. Since you're still young, it could be totally normal. During the young teen years, bodies are changing like crazy! So still give it some time, your period will most likely come when it's ready. If you ever experience really abnormal discharge though, it's best to see a doctor!

It's totally natural for a girl's period to be irregular, especially when you're first starting to get it.  But it's true that you should generally get your period every single month.  If it goes on for more than this one month, then you and your mom might wanna get it checked out just to play safe Smile

I would say about half of the people I know who are going to the gyno are seeing one because they are having sex and the other half because they are having problems 'down there'. And I kind of agree that even if you are thinking about starting to have sex that you should see the gyno but its not always easy to get to one. I know I should be seeing one soon and I also know if my dad found out he would give me another long speech.

MOD
How do I bring it up to my mom that I want to go see a doctor because I'm 15 and have had period signs, but no period. I am perfectly comfortable bringing it up to my friends, but how do I ask my mom?

Just let her know that you are worried about your period. She will understand because she knows a lot about periods. Good luck! xoxo kerra

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Ok I've been developing breasts since 6th grade and now im in 7th and i've had discharge since 5th grade. I get cramps down there all the time, is my period gonna start? And also my mom said that as soon as i started my period shes making me go to a gyenocologist and get a test for uterus cancer is this necissary?

It does sound like you have a lot of signs of your period. So be prepared for it. Also i think you going to the doctor is a good idea becasue you can never be too careful when it comes to cancer. Good luck! xoxo kerra

Hey mod!! Please answer! Smile
Okay so today I was sitting in class and all of a sudden it felt like there were knives stabbing me in my lower stomach. It felt almost like muscle spasms or something! It hurt so bad and it was worse when I bent over. But within a few minutes it went away, and It hasn't happened since. Are these period cramps? I don't have my period, (I'm 13) and I've never had them before, but they haven't happened since then. Also, the last few days I have been having TERRIBLE discharge. It was sooo gross! Does this mean my period is close?
I know you don't know when my period will start but does those stomach pains sound like period crampS? If so, how long before your first period do those usually start??
XOXO MUCH LOVE! <3

Those all seem like signs of your period. So i would get pads and tampons to prepare for your period. Good luck! xoxo kerra

K so at first, my period was normal, but now it has gotten weird. The first two times i got it in November and December, the flow was really heavy and were exactly a month apart, and lasted a week. The very next month in January the flow was extremely light and was almost like spotting, it lasted for about 4 days. I had two periods in February, which were both extremely light like January. Is this normal?? I am kinda freaked out because my period isn't as heavy.
Thanks MOD,
Selena

It is normal for a period to not be regular, especially when you first get it. I would ask your doctor if you are really concerned though.

Okay well i saw the docter the other day and she said am underweight. Well she told me i had to eat a least 6 times a day. Not full meals. Like apples and stuff like that. Its very hard because i dont really eat snacks and stuff exepe lunch.

My sister has problems with that too. Just try to work little snacks into your day. I'm sure it won't be that hard to adjust, especially if it is a food that you like. Try smaller servings at first to get you used to it and then you can eat more once you are used to having more meals.

MOD MOD MOD MOD I answered "yes" to one of these questions but, I have had itching down there since I can remember. I never knew what caused it to itch but, I have to have a special kind of soap to wash with. Sometimes, I have to go take a bath just because it hurts/itchs.

Hey girl,
If you're really concerned and if it continues to bother you, go ahead and talk to your mom about seeing a gynocologist.  Even if nothing is wrong, there's no harm in getting a check up and making sure!  good luck<3

Hey girl,

Women in their 40s and 50s and older should be tested for breast cancer.  But you can still learn how to give yourself a self-exam to check for breast cancer.  Ask your gyno about this and any other concerns that you have.  good luck

**********MODDDDDD************
My parents are out of town for a few weeks, so I am staying with my grandparents. I just started my period (not for the first time...I've been getting periods for 4 years now) while I was sleeping about and hour ago. It kinda...got all over my underwear and my pajama pants and my sheets. My grandpa is sleeping, but my grandma is up cooking. her and i are really close, but we've never talked about my period before, even though i've had it for quite a while. so this whole thing is just really embarrassing for me. should i just go ahead and tell her what happened and ask her to help me get the blood out? i'm cramping horribly bad right now, and flowing really heavy. i really just want her to pour me a hot bath and give me some tylenol or somethingfor my cramps. and pretty soon, i'm going to need her to take me to the store to get more pads and tampons. i know she used to get her period too, but talking about it just makes me feel weird. like it's still a taboo subject or something. what should i do? and what should i tell her? because even if i do the laundary myself, she's going to want to know what i'm doing and what happened. i just really don't want her to tell my grandpa. what should i do or say????
PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey girl, don't sweat it. Periods happen to everyone and you can't help what happened. Just let her know what's up and she'll help you from there. You can ask she doesn't tell your grandpa if you're super uncomfy about it too.

Hey girl, here's my advice: right now, take a deep breath, take it easy and one day at a time. Wait to see what the test says and evaluate your options from there. Nothing is ever worth hurting yourself over and believe me, there are definitely solutions out there that can work for you. Continue talking to your counselor and remember to use protection next time -- it's super important. If the test comes out positive, you will need to tell your mom. Trust me when I say she wants help you and she cares. While she may be mad originally, she needs to know to support you and help you make the best choice for your future.

MOD MOD MOD

Hey girl,
I know it can feel super-awkward, but you should at least talk to a parent or trusted adult about the sitch.  The good news is, if you go to a doc, they really only want to help you.  They are totally used to that kind of Q, and will make the process as pain-free as possible!

MOD MOD MOD!

Hey girl,
I'm not an expert in that area, but I would definitely talk to an adult (like your mom or aunt) who's been through it or a doc - they can let you know what it's like.  But it's nothing to worry about - docs always want you to feel comfortable.

If you need advice, ask me, leave a comment on my pro. About ANYTHING, anytime, anywhere, send the message on. I am also starting a club it is where girls petition to prevent animal neglect and cruelty. It breaks my heart. If you want to join, leave a comment on my profile saying "SAVE THE DOGS AND CATS" My actual club is called "Club Save The Animals" so write club save the animals on my pro. Also, tell me an animal story or how you want to make a change. I will give you more club details as a comment on your profile if you join.

Hey girl,
I'm sorry you came across that - I'm sure that was distressing.  However, it is your mom's personal business, so if you don't want to talk to her about it, then you can probably rest assured that it's alright.  If you're still feeling freaked, find another safe adult you can talk to.

MOD What is the average weight for a girl to start her period? My friend weighed 95 pounds when she got hers, and she said you need to have enough weight to bleed. I weigh 98 pounds. Is that about right?

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD I am 15 years old, weigh 98 pounds, and I have had discharge for about a year and a half, I have had hair 'down there' for about 2 yers, and have had breast development for about 2 years. So, all I keep asking myself is where is my period?

hey girl! our bodies develop and different rates for every person. Those are in fact warning signs, but they don't mean you are abnormally late getting your period. If you are nervous about why you haven't gotten your period, it is totally ok to ask your doctor. believe me, they've heard it all before!

Hey girl, I know it's scary at first, but I would just try it and if it makes you really uncomfortable just continue using pads. Check this page out, I think it'll help! =] http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx

Hey girl, it's completely normal. Some people get it everyday, and some people hardly get it at all. You should only go to a doctor if it's changing color or making you uncomfortable or itchy.

MOD I'm 15 and don't have my period, do I need to see a gyno?

Hey girl,

Every girl gets their period at a different stages of their teenage years.  But if you're really worried, you should go see a gynocologist.  There's no harm in it.  If you don't get your period by age 16, then you should definitely go see a gyno.

MODMODMOD How do i start a conversation leading up to telling my bff i got my period. I mean excact word and everything.

Hey girl,

If you and your BFF are really close, then you shouldn't be scared to tell her you got your period.  You can start off by asking her if she got hers, and from there the conversation will flow more easily.  With that conversation starter, you'll feel more comfortable letting her know that you got yours.  Best of luck Smile
