I'm scared to get a physical for sports!

Check these out, too...

  • Please make my nose stop bleeding!
  • Will my yeast infection go away by itself?
  • Why do I wet my undies after I go to the bathroom?
  • My throat's all phlegm-y!
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
Athletes at my school say you have to go to the doctor to get a physical. I don’t know what I would have to do. I heard you might have to take off some layers of clothes for the doctor, and that makes me uncomfortable. What is a physical and should I be nervous?

Hey girly! It’s totally normal to feel a li’l nervous about your first physical. After all, who really likes going to the doc anyways? But the truth is, there’s no need to fret!

What is it?

Physicals sound a bit scarier than they really are. A physical is actually just a check-up.  Usually, teens have an annual physical just so the doc can make sure you’re healthy and everything is developing right on schedule. When you go in, they’ll prob measure your height and weight, check your senses and breathing and see if you’ve had any recent health issues. No biggie!

Why do you need it for sports?

To join sports teams, a lot of athletes need to get physicals so the coaches can know they’re in tip-top health and OK to play. If a person’s having problems breathing, the coaches need to know about it…pronto! It’s all a matter of precaution. It may seem a tad overboard, but no one---the athletes, the doctors and the coaches--wants any serious health-related problemos.

Should you be nervous?

As you’ve heard, sometimes the doctor will ask you to remove some clothing to make sure you’re developing normally. It can be kinda awk, but the doc usually just takes a quick peek and it’s over. Now even though it would NEVER be OK for someone else to ask you to do that, this is an exception. Your doc is just checking up on you and making sure you’re healthy. If it makes you feel better, your mom can stay in the room with you. While you may feel a bit awk about it, there’s no reason to feel really nervous.  It’s just another part of the check-up, and it’ll be over before you know it ☺

You’ll be just fine, girl, no worries. Best wishes and good luck with sports!

omg i was kinda nervous for my first physical too! its not bad at all so you have nothing to worry about. you do have to take off all of your clothes (except your bra and undies) but you get to wear a hospital gown. your doc will poke your stomach, back, and reflexes. then you can get back into your clothes and she will check your eyes, ears, and blood pressure. thats basically it! it takes less then 15 minutes. my doctor is a guy and even with him it wasnt that uncomfortable! good luck! xoxo <3

I just got a check up today. It wasn't bad at all. She asked me a bunch of questions, checked my eyes, mouth, ears, felt my stomach, listened to my heart, and all the reg. stuff. She just asked questions about my "." she didn't have to look or check it out. I didn't have to take off any clothes. I am 11 though.

Physicals are nerve racking but just think... everyone has to get one so they wont even remember you after you leave

MOD!
so i have to get a physical for volleyball..;. i've had one before with a female docter but this time i have one with a male docter. I'm freaking out because it is going to be awkward! how should i calm my nerves??

Hey babe! No need to have that uncomfortable feeling. Try seeing if you can ask for a female doctor instead, a lot of girls feel the same way as you and prefer a female. You're not alone, and it's completely fine to ask!

MOD MOD MOD
i got a physical today and she was touching me wierd like on my boobs ans stuff and make me unhook my bra. it was really awkward. im 11. is this normal for my age cause it was uncomfortable.

Hey girlie, Doctors have to check a lot of parts of your body that might feel awkward, but you should always speak up if a doctor does something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Also, especially since you're only eleven, your doctor should keep your parents in the room while they examine you!
