I'm scared to get a physical for sports!

Check these out, too...

  • Please make my nose stop bleeding!
  • Will my yeast infection go away by itself?
  • Why do I wet my undies after I go to the bathroom?
  • My throat's all phlegm-y!
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
Athletes at my school say you have to go to the doctor to get a physical. I don’t know what I would have to do. I heard you might have to take off some layers of clothes for the doctor, and that makes me uncomfortable. What is a physical and should I be nervous?

Hey girly! It’s totally normal to feel a li’l nervous about your first physical. After all, who really likes going to the doc anyways? But the truth is, there’s no need to fret!

What is it?

Physicals sound a bit scarier than they really are. A physical is actually just a check-up.  Usually, teens have an annual physical just so the doc can make sure you’re healthy and everything is developing right on schedule. When you go in, they’ll prob measure your height and weight, check your senses and breathing and see if you’ve had any recent health issues. No biggie!

Why do you need it for sports?

To join sports teams, a lot of athletes need to get physicals so the coaches can know they’re in tip-top health and OK to play. If a person’s having problems breathing, the coaches need to know about it…pronto! It’s all a matter of precaution. It may seem a tad overboard, but no one---the athletes, the doctors and the coaches--wants any serious health-related problemos.

Should you be nervous?

As you’ve heard, sometimes the doctor will ask you to remove some clothing to make sure you’re developing normally. It can be kinda awk, but the doc usually just takes a quick peek and it’s over. Now even though it would NEVER be OK for someone else to ask you to do that, this is an exception. Your doc is just checking up on you and making sure you’re healthy. If it makes you feel better, your mom can stay in the room with you. While you may feel a bit awk about it, there’s no reason to feel really nervous.  It’s just another part of the check-up, and it’ll be over before you know it ☺

You’ll be just fine, girl, no worries. Best wishes and good luck with sports!

~Kristen Y. <3

what exactly does the doctor do to you when you get a breast exam!!!???

Hey girlie,

The doctor feels around your breasts to make sure there aren't any abnormal bumps (aka cancerous bumps)

At my most recent physical my male doctor asked me in depth questions about my "monthly cycle" (as he referred to it).
The worst part? They required my dad to stay in the exam room the entire time since I am under 18 years old!!

If at all possible, beg your mom to take you to your phsical!!

Hey girl,

This might be a good time to talk to your mom or guardian about switching to a female doctor. A lot of people do this as they start going through puberty. Even if you don't switch, keep in mind a physical's purpose--to make sure you're healthy.

MOD! What do they do to your vagina? Do they look at it for a long time or something?

Hey girl,

If you have to go to the gynecologist and start getting these types of exams, here's what you can expect... basically, there are two types of exams that your doctor will do: a breast and a pelvic.  For the breast exam, you just lie back on the chair and lift your arms (she'll tell you what to do, so don't worry about not knowing) while she makes sure your breast tissue is all "normal" by touching it.  For the pelvic exam, your doctor will basically look inside "down there" to make sure everything looks ok, and will probably take a sample of tissue (just like they do if you might have strep throat - it's a quick swab) for a Pap Test.  It's all really quick and as long as you relax, it won't feel any worse than just a little uncomfy.  It's weird to think about, but it isn't anything to be scared of!

mod mod mod,
after you piriod, you dont have to go to the gyno right, that just after you do *it

Hey girl, you can go to a gyn in your late teens, whether you're doing it or not. Your primary care doctor will tell you when the right time is though.

I said that they understood & i juist kept my clothes on. trust me, they can`t force u to. it`s not like they`re gonna rip your clothes off if you don`t do it. they can`t legally force u to. trust me.

I have a personal opinion on something, and i want to share it. On the side of my screen, there's an GL ad saying like, "Be a model...or just look like one." Models don't really have a certain look. They are just regular girls like us, with enhancement. Every girl is like a model in their own way, and you are kind of telling them they don't like a model already. Every girl is beautiful in her own way! Lauren C.

Mod! Okay when I was seven and went to the doctors for my checkup the doctor made m lay down and spread out my legs and he looked at my "lady parts" It's not like I had started puberty or anything. Now he does it every year, why? It makes me extremely uncomfortable since he's a guy, but I dont want to be mean and ask for a new doctor.

Hey chica! That seems a bit odd to me. I would mention it to your mom or dad, and ask if you could maybe you could switch to a woman doctor. It's not mean at all.

dear moderater, i think i've had a physical. i'm in 6 grade. i went to the doc and first he checked weight and height.the i had to take off all my clothes exept undies and bra.my doc opened up my bra and was feeling my boobs to see how tender they were. the she put my bra back into place and made me slightly take off my undies and felt down there. it was creepsville. when is the next time i will have to get a physical?

Hey chica! Not all physicals are that extensive. It all depends on the doc. If you join a sports team you might have to get a physical, or when you go to high school possibly.

omg i was kinda nervous for my first physical too! its not bad at all so you have nothing to worry about. you do have to take off all of your clothes (except your bra and undies) but you get to wear a hospital gown. your doc will poke your stomach, back, and reflexes. then you can get back into your clothes and she will check your eyes, ears, and blood pressure. thats basically it! it takes less then 15 minutes. my doctor is a guy and even with him it wasnt that uncomfortable! good luck! xoxo <3

Hey girlie, Doctors have to check a lot of parts of your body that might feel awkward, but you should always speak up if a doctor does something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Also, especially since you're only eleven, your doctor should keep your parents in the room while they examine you!

Hey girly! Blood tests are nothing to sweat about. They'll prick your arm with a needle, and it barely even hurts. Plus, the test is super quick, so you're not in pain. To calm yourself, I'd say definately don't look at the needle. Try having a conversation with one of your parents, or the nurse while they're taking blood so that you're not thinking about it. It'll be over before you know it.

MOD MOD MOD plz 2 questions Can girls get abs like guys can?? You know, like the hot guy stick out kind?? A six-pack?!?! I've been wondering this for a long time now! And-What is the best acne product to use? I use Neutregena and have acne on the top of my cheeks and on my chin. I wash my face before I go to bed and in the morning and also use once a day use this treatment pad things. both my cleanser/scrub and treatment pads have saliyc (idk how to spell it) acid in it. But the acne is still there. what should I do?? Please Help!

Thank You

Hey babe, Yes, girls can get six packs. They don't look exactly the same because a man's body is shaped differently than a woman's, but you can see all six ab muscles clearly. As for acne products, it reall varies based on your skin. It sounds like you might be doing a little too much right now. Try cutting out one of the products you've been using and see if that helps. Also, try not to touch your face so much. Sometimes it's the oil from your hands that makes your face break out.

Hey girl, it's hard to say. Unfortunately there's no way to predict exactly when your first period will come, but breaking out and cramps tend to be signs of PMS. I'd have pads ready just in case.

Hey girl, explain to your mom how uncomfortable it makes you feel and hopefully she will see that you mean it, and make you different appointments. If she still won't, just remember that we're all girls and all go through the same thing, and your family of all people won't judge you. Also, doctors are totally used to this sort of thing and don't think anything of it, so no need to sweat it!

I know I already asked this, but I REALLY can't find any suits! I like swimdresses too.
I know it's not the right season, but I really want a bathing suit. I'm like the girl in "Bathing Suit Styles For a Flat Chested Femme" except I DON'T like bathing suits that are padded a lot; I feel uncomfortable in bathing suits that make my chest look bigger than it really is. If I go to the junior's section, the bathing suits are are too skimpy and too "supportive" and if I go to the kid's section, they obviously do not have support. For my last bathing suit, I had to go to the woman's section that had a bathing suit that is WAY too padded! Help me please! Thank you!

Hey girl, that sounds pretty tough. Maybe you could search google for the exact type that you want. I am not sure where to suggest specifically. I know it can be tough to find the one that fits you just right.

MOD MOD MOD MOD PLEASE MOD MOD
Ok so a couple years ago i started my period when i was 11 and it continued for about a year and a half, but all of a sudden it stopped for the past six months i havnt had it. Im not really athletic at all (but still skinny) and well i dont know should i be worried? Is something wrong with me?

Hey girl, it can definitely be normal for periods to be irregular like that, but the six month gap is def worth talking to your mom about at least just to be on the safe side.

MOD, MOD, MOD! I am going into sixth grade next year and i really want to go to a really nice private school... but the only problem is... my mom said that, that school is way to much money. And even if i did get a scholar ship to that school, it would be around $9,000-$11,000, and we still cant afford it. How do i help my family make a lot more money? what is a good job for my mom, that pays good? HELP!!!

Hey girl,
The best thing you can do is to talk to your mom about ways that you can save money, and see if that would help.  If it doesn't work out to go to that school though, remember it's not so much about where you go as what you make of the experience!  Any school can be great if you make the most of it.  xoxo

MOD MOD MOD!!!! For the current GL issue, on page 24 it gives you a guide for bras and undies right? well I fit under the "Im buying my first bra" category because i don't need big bras even though I already have one, though it's not really good at support. I really like the bras they showed, but when I looked online for the website, they weren't there! Where can I find them! Thanks very much! you mods are the best!!!! Smile

Hey girl,
Gosh, I'm sorry, but I don't have my mag with me today so I can't check the links myself!  It could be that the stores are out of those particular styles, but they might have something similar if you search around.  Also, if you head into a department or undies store, they will help you find a style that works for you (and you can always bring your mag to show them what kind you're looking for!).  xoxo

Hey girl,
I know how you feel - I was nervous when I had to get my first physical too.  It's mostly just like your average check-up (and no, they won't have to pull your period out).  It can feel a little awkward or uncomfortable, but remember, your doc does this all the time, and they just want you to be healthy!  Check out this article for a more detailed explanation:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/04/09/what-is-a-physical.aspx.  Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD!! What are good acne fighters, besides Neutrogena? I know Neutrogena is really good, but it doesn't work for me. Please tell me some other brands, like does Clean and Clear work? Thank you so much!

Hey girl!  I'm not sure about specific brands, but I know there are two important things to look for in an acne product:  salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide.  Most acne products have one or the other, and it will let you know on the label.  You may want to test out products with both, and see what works better for your skin.  The best way to figure out how to fight acne is to see a doc or dermatologist - they can let you know what's right for your skin.

Hey girlie,

First off, take a deep breath!  Shots are scary but they're over before you know it.  When you're waiting, think forward to something else you have planned that day.  Are you getting lunch at your fave restaurant?  Do you have a friend coming over?  Will you get to watch a favorite TV show that night?  Just keep focusing on this happy thought, even while you're sitting getting your shot.  Turn your face away and keep thinking GOOD THINGS.  I promise it will help!  And don't sweat about the physical.  You most likely will keep your undies on.  (Even if you don't though, everyone gets hair down there.  It's nothing to be embarrassed about!)

ok sorry to bug u again but a while ago i asked a mod how to get my mom to convince my mom to let me were tampons and the mod gave great advice witch was to get some good info about tampons and then present it to my mom witch i did but now my mom wasa all angry with me now and i dont no why... i sorta feel bad for asking now because she is all mad and stuff... so should i just tell her never mind so she wont be mad any more (well at least not this mad..) ?!?!?! or should i just let her be mad for a little while??? cuz i really want to start wearing them because last summer i had to sit out every time we went to the pool and i was on my period.. and my dad got a better job than he had so my mom wants to take a little vacation and i dont want to have to worry about my period... so i was just wondering what i should do?!?!?!
THANKZ SO MUCH!!! :p

Hey girlie,

Try giving your mom some time to cool off, then calmly ask her WHY she got mad.  Let her explain her feelings and make sure you emphasize that you really want to know why.  You can try asking why she's so against tampons - it'll help a lot to put yourself in her shoes and try to understand where she's coming from, I'll bet!  And she'll appreciate that you took the time to see things from her point-of-view.  But once you know why she feels this way, you can start to figure out how to win her over.

We kind of all wonder about what boys go through during puberty to, I used to wonder more but now since I know more I just wonder about half as much. Its normal to wonder about that to, they dont get periods but they do have other things happen. They get hair like us and their voices change along with their other body parts. I think if you havent gone over it in school you will.

But I do wish gl had more stuff about it, so it wouldnt be so mysterious.

Hey girl, I think you're talking about a Pap Smear, and while they can seem very nerve wracking, they really aren't all that bad. There is no need to be embarassed. Doctors are professionals, and they've seen it all. It might seem weird to take your clothes off in front of a stranger, but doctors deal with it all day long. After you have your first one, it won't be as bad.

I've had a physical a few times already for school sports. At my doctor, it's really simple. They just weigh you and measure your height, and then he checked my back (I didn't have to take my shirt off) and my knee and throat and ears and breathing and stuff and it was really simple. I also answered questions on a survey on a piece of paper before I went in, and then he asked me a few questions when I got into the room.

So if your physical is like the past experiences I've had, you don't have anything to worry about. (:

Don't worry, at my physical I only had to pee in a cup and get my vision tested and my blood pressure checked. I didn't have to take any part of clothing off, or have my blood drawn (which is the worst!). But if you're really uncomfortable about letting a doctor check you, you should get a female doctor and not a male one.

Hey chica, oily skin sucks! I have the same problem sometimes. It's natural for skin to get shiner throughout the day. I think that happens to everyone, regardless if you have oily skin or not. Make sure to carry some oil-control powder makeup with you for touch-ups throughout the day (I love L'Oreal and Cover Girl ones). That always works for me!

don't worry about it. i already had my physical. its like a regular check up but without the shots. you only get your blood drawn to see if you are alright to play sports.

its just your doctor, you should not feel uncomfortable. they are just checking up on, and making sure you're okay. there's no need to worry at all. everyone gets them.
