A Cheery (But Totally Tough) Workout

You don’t have to shake pom-poms to take a cue from the spirit squad.
 
We chatted up author and former pro cheerleader Lindsay Brin about the best moves for toning up all over. Perform each move for a minute and do the whole circuit twice.

PLIÉ to PASSÉ
Start standing with heels together, toes turned out. Tuck your butt under, and keep your abs tight with your shoulders relaxed. Bend your knees and immediately straighten your right leg. Bend your left leg and place your left foot near your right knee. Perform 1 minute on each side.

TRICEP DIP

Sit on the floor. Place palms directly under your shoulders with feet on the floor. Raise your butt off the ground (you’ll be in a table-like position). Bend your elbows to lower down until your butt almost touches the ground. Straighten back up to start.

FOOTBALL PUSH-UP 
Use chalk or a piece of string to make a line 5 feet long on the ground. Start in a push-up position, with your nose, waist and feet over the line and your hands wider than your shoulders. Bend elbows and lower to the ground. Push yourself up. Walk hands to one side of the line. Repeat push-up, then walk hands to starting position. Alternate sides.

KNEE BRIDGE
Start on your back with your knees bent and heels close to your butt. Keep knees hip-width apart and arms by your side, with hands on the floor. Squeeze your knees together and lift your butt off the mat. Slowly return back to start. Lower knees to the sides, keeping the edges of your feet on the ground. Slowly return to start and repeat from the beginning.

HURDLERS 
Start in a push-up position. Bend one knee up to your stomach. Clench your abs and keep the rest of your body tight. Slowly return your foot back to start. Switch.

TACKLE
Start in a push-up position. Quickly bring both knees into your chest. Jump back out to your starting position. Do as many as you can, as fast as you can, keeping your heart rate up.

MOD Hey, ummm I need some abs excersises that are fast and easy, (maybe some I can just do in front of the TV?) and please either write them down or write down a link to one the pages on your site. MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD I'm not overweight, but i would love a flat belly. Right now i don't exercise at all. I feel stupid just exercising by myself or running around town. I can't run fast or far or do sports. My friends are all on track, but i can't do nearly what they do and it's already into the season. I really don't want to got to a sports center, but i need a way to work out without feeling awkward or dying. HELP thanx =-D

 

Hey girl!
The key to sticking to exercise is to find something you DO enjoy.  If you feel embarassed working out in public, there are lots of exercises you can do in the comfort of your own room!  GL has great ones in the mag every month, and you can also just turn up the tunes and dance for a great workout!  Also, think about activities you can do with your buds - swimming, bowling, and riding bikes are fun summer activities that are also great for your bod!  xoxo

I am a cheerleader and we do all of theese things! LOL except the first one....O and the tricep dips(we call em pregnant ladies) and we ceer at YMCA! LOL so we have everybody at the YMCA staring at us as we do em lol

Mod:
I've decided to stop procrastinating and have chosen to start working out (my motivation is a super cute guy ) and I want to work on my tummy, legs and arms. I'm gonna be doing this all inmy room bcuz I want it to be a surprise. So I'm using this work out DVD (I did 10 minutes of it last night (it was my legs mostly) and OMG my knees hurt lol and I can feel it today) and aside from that idk what I can do in such a sma space. Do u have any tips on what I can do ?

Good for you!!  That's great to hear that you've committed to getting healthy and fit.  Stick to it, even though it might hurt a little right now... that's just your body getting stronger in response to the hard work you've made it do Smile  Try searching through our G-Life section for a whole host of work-out ideas that fit with what you want to achieve (http://www.girlslife.com/category/workouts.aspx)...they can all pretty much be done in smaller spaces!  And don't worry about size or # of pounds that you want to lose - just keep going until you feel healthy and confident with your size! <3

MODMODMOD!!!
i joined track a month ago. in that same month i have GAINED 9 pounds!!! i think it's b/c of how ive been eating... well, NONE of my pants fit me!!! ahhh i have nothing to wear. how do i lose that weight really fast? Or at least make my legs a little smaller so i can squeeze into my jeans again?! please help!




Hey girl!

Since your putting your body through some sudden exercise, you've probably been getting extra hungry these days. So even though you wanna eat all the time and extra good stuff, you have to remember to keep a balanced diet because of all the calories your burning and the muscles you're working. So eat lots of fruits and veggies, plus protein and calcium!
