I don't want to be "daddy's little girl" anymore!

Check these out, too...

  • My dad started smoking...again
  • My mom read my diary without permission!
  • 7 things to say (and do) to keep your parents from worrying about you
  • What to do when your parents are worried about something big
  • My dad is sexually abusing me. How can I tell my mom?
I know I shouldn't be bothered by being "daddy's little girl," but it really annoys me when my dad treats me like a little kid instead of an 11 year old.

He still calls me his "Gracie Baby." When I tell my mom about issues with boys teasing me, I try to convince her not to tell my dad. He'll say "Just tell him that if he messes with my Gracie Baby then he's messing with me!" It just makes me really uncomfortable.

One time when I was harassed, he asked for the last name of the boy. I had to lie to him and tell him I didn't know because I was worried he would go and "teach that boy a lesson." UGHHH! HELP!

Hey chica,

I totally know how you feel about being daddy’s little girl. It’s a tough spot to get out of because, well, he is your dad and he thinks he's helping. Although the whole sitch won’t turn around in a blink of an eye, you can definitely get it moving with a couple simple steps.

Prove yourself

First of all, show him that you’re not a little girl. What are some things you do that make you mature and able to handle some things on your own?

Let him know that you can deal with the teasing on your own or with some help... from people other than him. Now, this doesn’t mean you should just block him off from knowing about your life. Whenever the topic comes up, tell him that there is no need for him to "teach someone a lesson."

Let him know that you got your teacher to help you out or you confronted those guys on your own. He’ll get that he doesn’t have to step in every time.

Have a heart to heart

If those subtle moves don’t do the trick, it’s time to have a dad-to-daughter talking sesh. There a reason he’s being protective of you all the time and it’s because he cares. And since he cares about you, he’s probably gonna want to hear what you have to say… about anything!

So just sit him down and let him know what’s been bothering you. Of course, there’s no need to make him feel guilty. Make sure to show that you appreciate that he cares.

But clearly tell him that you’re uncomfortable when he takes it too far and that you are growing up… in a way that will make him proud.

He'll probably always be a protective father, and it will be hard for him to let go sometimes. But showing him that you can deal with things in a grown up way might help him think of you more like an 11 year old than a 5 year old.

MOD MOD MOD
My mom knows that i'm going through puberty and stuff, and I think she tells my dad everything that I'm going through! Like breast growth, and periods and stuff, but I don't want my dad to know! That just makes it awkward between us! And i've even talked to my mom about it and nothings working!! Please help!!!!!

Hey chickie,

The only thing you can do is tell your mom exactly how hurt you feel when she shares your private issues with your dad.  Tell her that you trust her because she's a woman and has gone through all the same stuff, but you don't want your dad to hear about it all.  Maybe strike a deal with her - she can tell him about the bigger things {like your first period or your choice to try tampons maybe - even though that sounds horribly awkward too}, but she shouldn't fill him in about everything. But also understand where she's coming from.  She's experiencing these changes along with you and your dad is the person she shares her life with - she wants him to know what she's going through and what you're going through too.  All you can do is be honest about how you feel and try to put yourself in her shoes at the same time.  You'll get through it! <3

No offense, but this made my crack up. ^_^ You just gotta put yourself in your Dad's shoes. He doesn't wanna lose his little girl. Just think about it. You wouldn't want to either, as annoying as it is to admit.

Just put up with it for a little while longer, he'll porbably come to terms with it on his own pretty soon. If I can give a bit of advice, don't date... it'd kill him. XD

I think that u girls should luv u'r dad and let him do wat he wants to prove that he luvs ya. My Dad died 2 months before I was born so I never got to meet him. Than my Mom remarried and I got a step-dad when I was 5 they split up when I was about 7. So he's the only Dad I really know and it's not like I go over to his house every weekend either I have no communication wit him at all. I just saw him yesterday and I always get nervous around him I still love him as a Dad I just can't say it. So let u'r Dad show that he luvs u and b glad that u have a Dad.
