Land Your Dream Job This Summer!

 
Big career dreams? Use this summer to get your perf headstart. Whether you’re looking to be an actress, scientist or just want to have fun, GL’s got three things to try that will help you explore what you want to do.

Volunteering
Help others and build leadership skills. From running a summer camp to working at a local soup kitchen, giving others a hand can help you out too.

Try to volunteer at places that focus on things you’re interested in: a dance summer camp if you like performing, a library if you just love books, and so on. Be sure to ask any questions you have while working, these people have made a living doing the things you’re interested in. They can def give you ideas on what kind of job opportunities you’ll have someday and better yet, how to improve your craft.

P.S. Volunteering also gives you a li’l work experience so that you can pad up your resume!

Job Shadowing
Get a behind-the-scenes look at what truly goes on at your dream job. Ask a parent, relative or close neighbor who works in a field of your interest and if you cand “shadow” them for a day on the job.

Use your big day to learn about the kind of things they do, meet the people they work with and ask lots of questions. The big plus? You get to bond with that special someone too! So talk to your parents about going into work with them; some schools even excuse the absence if your parents send a note in explaining your motives.

Camp Exploration
Join different camps and activities this summer in areas you’re curious about. Like singing? Do a music camp. Way into science? Find a space camp or one that focuses on biology or chemistry experiments! By exploring your interests, not only will you have a lot of fun, meet new people who like the same things as you do and get to learn new skills, but you may find something you’d love to have a job in someday.

While college and work are years down the road, the biggest career stars are the ones who find what they truly love doing and pursue it—and there’s no better time to start than now!

hey! Just prioritize and don't let your job get in the way of your schoolwork. That should be number one. Take stock of your free time and decide ahead of time when you'll do homework. Then you won't rush at the last minute Smile

A chance at which thing? There are certainly volunteer opportunities, and it never hurts to ask for an experience at a company you might want to work for someday- it shows true initiative! Most jobs require an interview so that the boss or manager can get to know you and see if you'd be a good fit for the company.

You don't need to be in California to pursue acting! With school coming up soon, try out for school plays, and join the drama club! There are hundreds of opportunities around you, you just gotta find them!

Try to approach them at a time when they aren't busy or distracted.  Just explain to them exactly what's been going on for you, and what you would like from them (someone to talk to, help finding a counselor, etc.).  Parents love it when we share with them, so as long as you are honest I'm sure they will be more than happy to talk with you.

Hmm, I'm not exactly sure what's going on.  Empathy, which means being able to identify or experience other people's feelings, can be a good thing - it can help you understand your friends, and be more able to help them.  But if it's making you sick, it might be good to talk to someone about it.  Talk to an adult you trust - a parent, aunt, teacher, counselor - about what you're experiencing.  Hang in there, girl!

I would want to volunteer somewhere that involves animals since I want to be a veterinarian or a vet tech when I am older. Where do you think is a good idea? Like an animal shelter or groomer or something?

 

I'm sure animal shelters are always looking for volunteers!  A groomer would give you experience and could also probably use a help.  But if you're having trouble finding something, let your neighbors know you would love to pet-sit while they're on vacation or take care of their pets while they're at work.

Hey girl, I think one of the other mods answered your Q, but let me see if I can help!  Usually people take internships when they're in college, but it's possible to start in high school, too.  If there's a journalism teacher (or school counselor) at your school, I would talk to them about it.  You could also call up the station you're interested in working at and ask!

Hey girl, I would suggest taking a babysitting course so that you can do that. It's a good way to make a lot of money. You could try asking your parents if you can have a yard sale and you could sell some of your old things that you don't need anymore to make some cash.

Do I just walk in and ask the clerk for an application?? and my friend said that I would need a work permit because im oly 15. Where do I get one??




Go for it! You just walk in, and ask for a job application! There are so many great summer jobs- snow ball stands, pools, and the list goes on! If you are looking for a work permit, ask your parents.  It differs in every state, but I'm sure your parents might know where to get a permit. It's super easy, and typically you just need your birth certificate, and proof of employment.

Hey babe, You still have plenty of time to decide! Try to get a feel for both of the jobs you're considering. See if you can shadow a teacher or a pediatrician or volunteer. The more you know about both choices the easier it'll be to make your decision.

MOD MOD Ok i need help. my hair is always really greasy. i take showers every other day and sometimes everyday but i don't understand why the greasyness isn't going away. my hair wasn't this greasy when i was 9 or 10 but now it's super greasy and i have no idea what to do. will it ever go back to normal? and i have gotten my period already so do you think it has to do with puberty or something? i'm 12 thanks!!

Rest up, girlie!  Even if you are feeling better tonight, odds are you still have a bug or whatever you have in you.  Make sure to drink lots of fluids and sleep sleep sleep!  Plus, you don't want to get your friends sick too!  Then they won't be able to hang out when you're all better!

A Month ago I believe i got my period and I was to embarresed to tell my mom so I took my sis's pantyliner (Thats was all I needed cuz it was so lite) for 2 days and that's it. Its been over a month and nothing. I didnt have any cramps, moody and all the over signs.

ok, so my bf is leaving this year, so we decided to get each other a gift to remember us by. He got me this amazing bracelet, and i know it costed him A LOT of money, around 800 dollars. I´m going to buy him his gift tomorrow, and i don´t want to end up short. He likes the michigan state football team, and i know he wants the new x-box, should i get it for him, or would that be too much?? Thank you sooo much!!




The new X-Box might be a little much! I would go with a fun Michigan State Football jersey or something.  Because you know that he loves Michigan State, it will show him that you're paying attention, and really understand what he likes! Maybe you shouldn't spend all of your money on one thing, but rather get him a bunch of cute little things- like a Michigan State jersey, a Michigan State flag, or something else you think he might like!

Ok so i like this guy but he defreiended me from facebook after a huge rumor went around that he liked me. oh and i've had a bunch of his guy friends come up to me telling me that he likes me. (then why would he defriend me?) What should i do? what does this mean? how does he feel? sorry for so many questions...




Hey girl,

If you really like him and think it is worth risking showing that you like him, then talk to him/ask politely about the rumor. There isn't really another way to know for sure how he feels, but it can be confusing to have others speaking for him and more accurate to just talk to the source. I know that can be intimidating, so you might have to wait and see what happens.

okay, so i really need money this summer because for father's day and my mom's bday. but i can't do any regular summer jobs!
babysitting i can't do because there was a cpr class spicificlly for babysitting and it was all full.
i can't do pet sitting because there is already
someone in my neighborhood who does and nobody
really goes on vacation and/or has pets. i can't
do lawn care because i don't even know how to
use a lawnmower and my parents would think that
it's "dangerous".
i can't sell crafts or jelwery
because i don't have any supplies and my mom wont
let me sell on the street alone and she won't want
to watch me. i can't have a garage sale because
my parents would think it's too much of a mess.
and i'm too young to get a real job. i just don't
know what to do this summer for money, but i dont
want to just get my usual allowance, or ask to do
"extra" for my mom for extra cash. i want to do a
real job, but i don't know how or what to do!

Hey girl, why not try tutoring? If you're a good student, there are tons of kids out there who might need a little extra help with reading and math and who have parents who may be willing to pay you a bit.

Hey girl, most jobs entitle you to have to be 16 or older. But try talking to your parents about doing chores around the house (including yard work, laundry, doing the dishes, etc.) or try starting to dog walk or baby sitting more. Good luck. =]

MOD! hey. i had 2 questions:
1. i think that a lot of boys are really cute, and nice, and i really like them a lot. but, i just don't know: how do i know if i LIKE them, and dont just think that they are like cute and all? i just don't know how to tell the difference!
2. i have kinda big inner thighs. im on a super intense swim team, and i do tons of workouts, but my inner thighs are really big. it embarrasses me. what kinds of workouts can i do? i'm not looking for any other part of my body to be skinnier, but this really bothers me! thanx!




Hey girl, 1. The difference between just thinking a guy is cute and actually liking a guy is actually kinda easy. You just want to be around him because of more than just his looks, personality is included in this. 2. I'm also an athlete so I know where you're coming from. But when I want to have a gargae sale picking out the toys i want to get ride of is hard for me because most of them is from loveones that has past way from me. Hey babe,

It's really tough to give stuff away because we remember who gave them to us, what special occasion we got them for, all of the fun we've had with the toys... I could go on because I definitely hear ya!  But think of the kids who will be SO HAPPY to get those stuffed animals and dolls!  There are a lot of people who can't afford to buy toys at full price in toy stores, but at cheaper garage sale prices, they can get something special to play with.  Personally, making someone happy who otherwise wouldn't have been able to get a fun toy is a big incentive Smile remember that you don't have to give away EVERYTHING either - you are definitely allowed to keep the most precious toys that you have, but you don't need them all!

Hey girl,

That's super tough - this is definitely a lesson that one bad move can affect our reputations forever.  If this really bothers you, try sitting down with your friend and writing a letter to her mom.  Just be honest: tell her you know she's concerned because of your mistake, but that isn't who you are and you really regret it.  Promise her that stealing/lying isn't something you do and you would never try to influence your friend to do it, either.  Make sure she knows you respect both her and her daughter - that's important, too.  Just get your feelings out and try to show her that you did slip up this one time, but you learned your lesson and you're someone who can be trusted.  It's going to take a lot of proving yourself in order to convince her, but it's worth it if you really love your friend and want to be seen as trustworthy by her mom.
