Awesome Summer Styles for Thick Hair

Dying for a new, fab ‘do to sizzle through summer? We’ve got the low-down on three great summer styles for all hair lengths and textures. Read on for tips and tricks to transform your tresses!

Long, Textured Curls
Works on Way long locks that let ya rock your natural texture.

The Trick: Apply a dressing like Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey ($10, carolsdaughter.com) to lock out frizz. Work in curl cream or gel, then separate hair into sections using a comb to coat each strand. Sit under hooded dryer. When dry, starting at back, gently stretch curls out while blowing them with hot air from a hand-held dryer to loosen ‘em.

Up the Style: On days when you need a simpler style, gather hair into a high ponytail. Perfection!

Shorter, Tighter Curls
Works on If your hair is has lotsa tight curls, you can sooo do a shorter ‘do.

The Trick: If you’ve got super-tight ringlets apply Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding ($22, missjessies.com) to sopping hair (cover all strands completely). Air-dry or diffuse. Finger fluff later to get volume.

Up the Style: Add cute clips for oomph.

Sleek Side Bun
Works on Relaxed locks that are on the long side.

The Trick: Start with dry hair. Use a comb to make a deep side part. Brush hair into a low side pony, keeping a few pieces out in front. Secure with an elastic. Twist hair into a bun and hold with another elastic. Using a curling iron with a 1-inch barrel, create corkscrew spirals, framing your face. Finish by misting with spray.

Up the Style: Wrap a scarf around your add for a splash of awesome color.

MOD MOD MOD: I have super thick (thick enough for four people, not even joking), super curly and dry/frizzy. No matter how I style it before it dries it is ALWAYS poofy. every day I put it into a side braid and its getting old. I went to get it cut but all they did was butcher it! its down to my bra strap in the back with "long" layers and I have no idea how to style it with out it getting frizzy. I don't like blow dryers or rollers because they do nothing! HELP?!

The best thing to do would be to use a shampoo and conditioner every other day or every two days, so your hair stays moisturized and soft without overdrying it. You can try mixing up your look by throwing your hair into a high ponytail (and dressing it up with a cute headband), and take our frizz-fighting tips for curly-haired chicas Good luck!

don't worry about it. Most people won't even notice it. Wear tights
or leggings under your shorts and skirts. It'll hide the hair.

Hey girlie, try a bun with a headband or other cute accessory. You can do a low bun or one in the middle. You could also try a low ponytail or a french braid.

Hey girlie, your hair might be too short or too thin to pull back into a bun. Try putting your hair in a ponytail first and then wrapping your hair around the base of the ponytail and secure it with another hair tie.

Hey so my first two comments never showed up so I hope third times the charm! Right now I have medium length brown thick hair. I have long layers and side bangs also. I was wondering if you have any new style or cut ideas for it. Because everyone's hair is different- it's up to you! If you really like having side bangs, maybe you want to switch it up and try straight across bangs? Or maybe chop a few inches off to lighten up your load. But, whatever you do, make sure you feel comfortable with the end result because you'll have to live with it! Also, if you need a product, try looking around at your local drug store, or ask your hair stylist when you go in for your new 'do!

i have super poofy thick wavy/curly hair (think shaun white) that i usually straighten or put up in a bun. but this year, i'm on the swim team and we'll have about 30 min to shower, makeup, hair, etc. for school. i can straighten my bangs in that time but not all my hair. its also layered so i can't put it in a side pony without it falling out. any 5-min ideas? thanks!

Here's some advice for Samigon123. This girl at my school had super curly, short hair (like to her shoulders)- it must of been a perm, but anyway, she straightened her bangs so they were completely straight. It looked really good actually! And no one in the entire school had that hairdue, so I'd give it a try and go for it. If it doesn't work out, there are always other styles to go for. Hope this helps!

That's a tough one - I know bangs can be tricky with curly hair. It might work fine, depending on how curly your hair is. I would have a chat with your hairdresser, and see if she can help you figure out what kind of bangs would work with your hair type (for example, it might be easier with sideswept bangs).

If you have really thick curly hair, like I do, that is angled(shorter)in the front but it doesn't fit into a pony, here's a fun easy trick. Take the short(angled) part of hair and french braid or do a regular braid and ponytail it. Take the end of the braid and put it into you pony. It's a perfect way to get all the frizz back in a cute sleek way!

I have been dying to dye my hair (haha, get it?), but my parents won't let me. The color I want is only 2 shades lighter than my hair, so it's not like it's a drastic change. They keep saying I don't need to get my hair dyed; that I was given my hair color for a reason, but my mother dyes HER hair. Any ideas how I can convince them to let me do it (at a salon)? Thanks.

I bet the REAL reason for not letting you dye your hair is because it's REALLY expensive. I'm 19 and can't afford it. Your parents are right in not wanting to spend that much money. But if you suggested getting a good, easy, at-home kit, they might be more open to that.

Hey girly! Unfortunately, unless you have curly hair already, you'll probably have to use a curling iron. However, you can make it wavier by putting your hair back in a big breaid (or braided pigtails) when it's wet, and leaving it in the braid until it's dry. Voila, it'll come out with nice beachy waves

Hey girl, well there is always flaring it out with a straightener, which is adorable if you have layers. Then there is the regular pin-straight down look, which is really cute too. But you have to be careful how much you straighten your hair because it can definitely do some damage to it after a few months. So make sure you get routine trims! =] -- For foods, just make sure you stay away from the fast foods, really sugary foods, and definitely soda. Make sure you drink lots and lots of water! =]

Hey gurlie, I would definitely recommend cover-girl or mac make-up you can't go wrong with one of those two brands. I'm not sure of your skin type but liquid foundation is generally speaking more natural looking. you can wear long lasting mascara and neutral eye shadow that enhances your eyes and give you a natural look at the same time. I generally don't think blush is that necessary.

Those sound super cute! You can do so much with hair clips. But, because you have short hair, I would recommend pulling back the front of your hair (around your face) and clipping it near your ear. This way, it won't only look really cute, but also, you're hair won't be annoying you 24/7 by falling in your face!

That's an awesome thing to do for charity! It will also be a fun time to experiment with new hair. If you can't pull it back, you can still experiment with fun accessories. Headbands and cute clips are great in short hair. You could also try a few mini braids for a fun look!

Hey girl, I totally had that same prob until I started using hairspray (strong hold). Overnight curlers also really helped -- even without the spray, they stuck around much longer.

Hey girl, I'd go for low lights -- they're more of a dirty blonde and would go better with your hair color. Your hair sounds gorgeous though so really think it through before you start altering it. Chemicals can be really hard on it.

Your parents are just looking out for you. Try talking to them and telling them that your BF is a nice guy, and you'd like to be able to hang out with him more. Maybe they'd be more comfortable with it if he came over to your place while they were home so they could get to know him better.

Say it with me: BOBBY PINS! Let your layers grow out on their own {it'll look just fine if you leave them down}, but take sections of your bangs, give them a little twist as you pull them back, and secure them back with a bobby pin or two. Accessorize with a pretty hair clip to make the look really special this will definitely get you through the awkward growing-out period!

Go on picnics, the amusement park, rent movies, try new hobbies {like painting, photography, a sport}, learn how to cook each other's favorite meals, etc. Try making it a game - it's your turn to choose the activity today, but he has to choose tomorrow, then you, and so on Don't be afraid of having downtime either. No matter what, it'll be a lot of fun because you're doing it together!

I'm not entirely sure, but it's probably not a good idea. Perms put a LOT of stress on our hair as it is, so ironing it every single day could potentially leave some pretty bad damage {drying hair out, frying it, etc.}. Plus, if you got a perm for straight hair, should you need to smooth it over so often? She should probably ask her hairdresser about this one!

If you've met and had a conversation, you're good to add him on Facebook, IM him, or even text if you have his number. Try Walmart {though make sure you try them on so you can feel the quality of the material}, JCPenney, and OldNavy. OldNavy is especially good for the board shorts - just keep an open mind {like, instead of only trying on one pieces, maybe try tankinis too} and you should be able to find everything you need!

To vary up your look, try pinning up little pieces (one good way to do this is to pretend you have bangs and pull up a small section right in the middle of your head} with bobby pins. If you don't like wearing any of your hair up because it's so short though, spice up your hair with accessories. A cool headband, embellished hair clip, or sassy hat will make your outfit look even more special!

MOD: any tips/tricks to get rid of a hangover or calm it quickly?

Well, first thing is obviously not to drink so much that you get a hangover in the first place! but if you are in that situation, there are some things to try to help. Exercise {even just a brisk walk} helps increase circulation to perk you up. Chicken soup helps settle your stomach and an Advil {but not any more than that} can help with headaches. But seriously - drinking so much that you wake up with a hangover is NOT smart. Make good decisions the day before and you won't wake up with a hangover or any regrets in the morning.

Yep! There are three types of perms available these days: the tiny ringlets, loose waves, and extra body to fine hair. So you can choose the method that is right for you. But make sure you talk to your hairdresser THOROUGHLY and ask all of your questions before you get it done. Perms are a lot of stress on your hair and you want to make sure it's worth it!

1. I have a pretty bad body image. I don't do any sports but am joining marching band and lacrosse next year. I really need to work out and be more confident of my body. Why don't you sit down with your parents and ask how together you guys can work out a gym membership. Im a really good crocheter (crochet is like knitting) so i've started selling hats and scarfs and gloves to my friends and i want to expand my business. i know of a website where you can create your own website for free and you can even sell stuff on it. i've signed us for a free website before and it's really cool and it works but the problem is, i'm afraid that 1) no one will find the website and i won't sell anything and 2) no one will trust that i'll send them the product and they'll think i'll just take their money. any advice?

I have really thick hair too. Everytime I get my hair cut the hairstylist says "Your hair is SO thick!" Mine is pretty straight though.

i really need your help...im really scared..you see, i took some REALLY wrong videos and pictures on my phone...i deleted them, and i've stopped doing it, but they were so bad to where if i was caught i would probably get fined..i was wondering if it would be considered "sexting"...i didnt send them to anyone, and there deleted and gone forever, but its on my conscience...please help thank you

Hey babe, 1) You can get bikinis or tankinis that have shorts or skirts instead of a regular bottom - and they're totally in right now too! You can also get a cute boyshort style bottom to a bikini or tankini. There are also retro style one pieces that have the same effect, though those tend to be more expensive. 2) Make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen, water, and maybe a snack to keep yourself safe from the sun, hydrated and energized! You could also bring a frisbee or a ball to play a game on the beach. 3) Tough question, haha! I think it's a tie between Tigger and Roo.

MOD MOD Okay so currently i share an itunes with my sister. She has had it forever, always gets itunes free songs, and has a ton of songs on her itunes. She recently went to college. The itunes account is so big that i am unable to access it at home without being at risk of crashing my computers tiny hard drive. Because of this, i can only update my ipod only a few times a year. Plus, my sister doesn't have a lot of the songs i like. When i tell her she should buy some of them, she tells me its a waste of her computer space and money. This disappoints me. do you think i should start my own itunes so when i get a new ipod i can branch out on my own, or do you think it is a waste? Thank you so much!

Hey babe, you can download iTunes for free, so I think it's not a problem at all to get your own set up, especially if you and your sis have different tastes.

Hey babe, I don't think it would hurt her feelings to let her know that it upsets you and to ask - politely, of course - if she could just talk about him a little less around you. She knew that you and he had a history before she started dating him, I assume, so she shouldn't be surprised that it's difficult for you. I think she'll understand if you just talk to her about it.

I have crazy thick hair, but it's not at all curly or wavy. It just stays straight, so if I wanted my hair to be curly it would take me about 2 hours, but I might try the side bun thing.

Hey babe, Yes it can. The heat isn't good for your hair. Most of what you do to your hair causes damage - pulling it back in a pony tail, using styling products, blow drying, straightening, curling... You can help minimize the damage by using restorative shampoos and conditioners and eating plenty of healthy fruits and veggies that will give your hair lots of vitamins and keep it strong.
