What if I get my period at the pool?

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?

I’ve been invited to a bunch of pool parties this summer. What if I have my period? I’m scared of tampons.

Tampons can be super scary at first. But, if you want to swim during your period, tampons are a must.

Wigged out about the possibility of toxic shock syndrome? “The risk is extremely small, especially if you don’t keep a tampon in for more than several hours at a time,” says gynecologist Dr. Janet Rubin.

Dr. Rubin suggests trying a slender tampon on a day of full flow sometime before the first pool party. So by the time bikini season rolls around, you’ll be a pro.

Hi I think I got my first period today. I have 2 qs
How can I tell my mum
And
Is it ok to use tampons on ur first period cause I'm going to a bday party tomorrow and it's a pool party if I can how do u insert them.(ps I tried looking for the instructions but the box that I found at home was already opened and I can't ask my mum cause she's off at the store. Thanks in advance Smile :p

Hey girlie,

Just go for it! There's no good way to tell mom that it's started - it'll feel awkward and kinda uncomfy to tell her something so personal, so just take a deep breath and say it: "Hey mom? I think I got my period." She's had a first period before too, so she knows how you feel! <3 And you can definitely use a tampon on your first period if you and mom are comfortable with it. Take a deep breath, relax your muscles, and try reading these GL guides for some more tips. And don't be scared to ask mom for her guidance! You still have some time to practice Smile

Mod Mod Mod, please!
I really think I'm going to get my period soon, and so does my Mom. I have a couple questions, tho! I do competitive swimming, but I stopped doing it this summer, and I'm going to start again in August... will that delay my period even more? Also, I sort of PMS without a period! My discharge gets really heavy, I get mood swings, and cramps, and all of that. but still no period! Does that mean that I will get my period sooner? Thanks!

Hey girl,

Being active can delay your period, and discharge can mean your period is coming. But I can't predict when your period will happen, so the best option is to explain your symptoms to a doc to get professional advice!

Hey there! Okay so i stated my period like 6ish months ago and sometimes my periods come like every 2 or 3 weeks but sometimes they are normal and come like every month. Is this normal since im new to my period? thankss

Hey girl, sometimes it takes your body a little bit to regulate. I would talk to your doctor if it makes you uncomfy, just to be sure!

k I know this is completely unrelated 2 the post but my friend has been acting weird lately. her dad was arrested about a year ago, and since then she's been different. she showed up 2 school with a cut on her leg and told this sketchy sounding story about how she had duct tape round her ankle randomly and she cut it off with a butter knife. recently she told me she was going 2 die at 21 and she's been asking really morbid questions. what should I do? I'm really worried

Hey girlie,

Personally, I would talk to someone about what she's been saying. Whether it's one of your parents, a school counselor, a trusted teacher, your school nurse...WHOEVER... tell them what she's been saying and how bad/dangerous it sounds. Tell them you're concerned and you want to make sure she isn't alone in all of this. She's clearly going through some tough times and she's probably saying these things to get a reaction from people. But you can't take a chance and just shrug it off - tell someone just in case she's in a really bad place. That way, someone can help her with a more positive outlook on life! <3

I'm 13, I weigh ((weight omitted by mod)) lbs, I have a TON of pubic hair, and I get so much discharge, and I wear a 34A bra. Will I get my period soon? Also, I was wondering, I get PMS symptoms without the period! When my Mom get's her period, I get really cranky, mood-swingy-ish, and sometimes I get cramps. Does this mean I will get my period sooner? Also, I am a competitive swimmer, but I haven't really been going... I am going back in August. Does being active really delay your period? And how long? Sorry this is so long Laughing Thanks!

Hey girlie,

Unfortunately, there's no way to predict exactly when you'll get your period. Even your doctor can't guarantee when you'll get it! But it sounds like you are going through puberty normally and you're on your way! Girls get their period at all different ages, so try not to compare to other friends/family members or even worry that you haven't gotten it yet. You sound totally healthy! If you have any further questions though, chat with your doc for more info Smile It's totally possible for you to have mood swings right now even without your period - your hormones are going crazy since you're going through puberty, so "PMS" symptoms can happen. As for being active, usually it's mostly changes in your lifestyle (diet, sleep patterns, stress, weight) that can delay/speed up your period. But everyone's body is different and it won't delay it by a LOT (not months or years). Usually, it's just a few days each month Smile
