What if I get my period at the pool?

I’ve been invited to a bunch of pool parties this summer. What if I have my period? I’m scared of tampons.

Tampons can be super scary at first. But, if you want to swim during your period, tampons are a must.

Wigged out about the possibility of toxic shock syndrome? “The risk is extremely small, especially if you don’t keep a tampon in for more than several hours at a time,” says gynecologist Dr. Janet Rubin.

Dr. Rubin suggests trying a slender tampon on a day of full flow sometime before the first pool party. So by the time bikini season rolls around, you’ll be a pro.

I'm 13, turning 14 on January 1st, and I haven't gotten my period yet. I know there's nothing wrong with that, but I was thinking that my weight might affect that: (BTW my mom didn't get hers til she was like 14/15 - but IDK) I am about 5 ft 1/2" and I weigh about 98 lbs... IDK if that's healthy weight/underweight, whatever... But yeah - I STILL don't have my period, but sometimes I get pretty heavy discharge...

Hey girly, you're right there is nothing wrong with not getting your period yet. And while we don't always get ours around the same time our mother did, I think in this case you prob will. As for your weight, I'm no doc but I think that sounds about right. As long as your eating correctly and staying active you're probably perfectly healthy. If your concerned about your weight, ask a doctor at your next visit or bring it up to your mom. But don't be in a hurry to get your period, enjoy not having it while you can!

Mod mod mod. okay so when I am on my period it burns when I pee and it still burns a little when im finished. Can you tell me why this happens to me and what I can do about it thanks

Hey girly, this could happen for tons of reasons. For example,  tt could be a bacterial infection or a UT or you could just be dehydrated,  Drink lots of cranberry juice during your period and keep it clean down there and don't be afraid to talk to a doc or your mom.

MOD MOD MOD I just started my period a few months ago, and it hasn't been irregular, but it does come SUPER early. And it also is heavy, and it feels awful. Is there anyways I can just ignore that, or is it just gonna be like that every month?

Hey snapapplez101, it may get better over the months. Sometimes the symptoms and lengths of periods change as we get older. Xoxo

I'm on my second period EVER and its been super irregular (which I know is normal this early on) I bled for like 2 days very light, then it stopped for like a day but then came back the next day light. Then all day today it wasn't there (This is Day 6) but then came back light at around 2. Now I'm not bleeding but I have a beach thing tomorrow at 11:30 and I'm afraid it might start again during it and if its not there before I leave I won't know whether to use a tampon because I know its not good to if your not on your period but Im also afraid it'll start up again WHILE im at the beach! And I don't think I'll be able to find a bathroom! HELP!!!!

Hey chica! It's normal for light periods to go away and come back.  If you're planning on hitting the water, bring a tampon and right before you go in, head to the bathroom and check to see if your period has started.  If it has, put the tampon in, but if not, swim without worrying about it! It's your period is super light, you won't have to worry about bleeding a lot before you realize it's happening! xoxo

I'm confused,a few months ago I started to get really bad cramps and then when we were in Mexico I think I may have gotten my period but I'm not sure. Nothing has happened since then but I am a competitive swimmer and I swim 5 times a week. What if I get my period at the pool and why hasn't anything happened for months?

Hey girl,

Even if you got your period at the pool, you would definitely still know. You're probably fine, but if you're worried about your symptoms and irregularity it never hurts to talk to a doc!

so ive been getting cramps lower on my stomach and on my lower back. ive also been getting more discharge. I told my mom and she said that my period might be coming soon. is this true? also i want to have a emergency kit at school for periods in case and any other accident such as rips in my tights or something, what should i include in the kit. Thanks so much

hey! those are some symptoms so your mom could be right, just wait and see. In the kit I think you should have  some pads or tampons if you use them, some panty liners, a fresh pair of undies, tide to go, and maybe keep a sweater in your locker in case you need to hid a stain. good luck!

Hey cali princess, you should take it out whenever you feel you need a new one. So if you even wore it for 2 hours and it's soaked take it out. TSS is cause when you wear a tampon for longer than 24 hours. Hope this helps! Xoxo

How long should you keep a tampon in? The box says up to eight hours, but I'm not sure. And can you please explain how you can get TSS? Lynae P.

I am 15 and I have had my period since I was 13.. I have issues with using tampons. I have tried several times, and I can never get it in right, or all the way. Is there such thing as having too small of a vagina, or is it something else? I am very worried about this. Thanks for the help

Hey girlie,

There IS such a thing, but chances are you don't have it - more likely, your muscles just probably haven't adjusted to the tampon yet! I know it's frustrating because you've been trying for so long, but you have to relax EVERY muscle down there so you can slide the tampon in, then give it some time before your bod is totally used to the feeling. Check out this article for more help on finally getting the tampon to work for you Smile Hang in there!

Hi!
I just got my first period at the begining of this month (like the 1st of August or something..) and I asked my mom how long her period happens, so i could kinda make a prediction. But now I have these little brown clotty things on my pad that don't look at all like my period. It's my first time so I have no idea if it'll be a regular thing or not.....it's been going for 10-ish days now! Only 5 of them were my period.
HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

Hey girl! That stuff is totally normal.  Sometimes your period lingers (which is annoying), but if it goes on for much longer, you might wanna talk to your mom.  xoxo

So the past two morning I have woke up with re spots in my undies but that is all for the day. And a while before this I have had super heavy discharge. And I have had cramps. And I have a problem I don't know if my period is coming or not and I a few days I am going on a road trip with my family for a few days and I know how to use tampons and pads and all that but I haven't had my period yet. And we are going to this FGIANT water park for over a day and I don't know. What should I do? Being a pad and tampon and extras or just wait? Please help

Hey girlie, Sounds like your period is on the way, so if I were you I would pack a handfull of tampons (about 2 or 3 for every day you'll be gone) and the same amount of pads.  Pack them in a ziploc, so you'll know where to find them if you need them.  xoxo

MOD MOD MOD one more thing its my 6th day when im going to the pool party on saturday and im just wondering do i have to keep in the tampon on fro a while or whatever i dont know how it goes Tong Smile
thank you so much

No problem, girlie. Smile That's good that it's your 6th day 'cause hopefully your flow will be a li'l lighter by then. But even if not, the cold water of the pool tends to halt the flow for a little while. So if you're in the water for a while, you shouldn't have to worry too much about checkin' your tampon. Typically, I'd check to see if you need to change it every 2 hours, just to be on the safe side. But you might be able to get away with just changing it every 4 hours, if your flow is light enough.

thanks so much!! Smile

Hey girl, if you've got a tampon for the pool, you should be all set. Some things to keep in mind, though, are: 1) Change your tampon when you're done swimming for sure. 2) It's a good idea to use a pantiliner with a tampon (when you're not in the pool), just in case there's some overflow. So if you're hangin' out for a while in your swimsuit before you actually get in the water, you might wanna wear a pantiliner and just make a quick trip to the bathroom to take it off right before you get in the water.

Hey girl! Tampons just take some getting used to.  Make sure you're using light tampons (they are the thinnest) and wear them for awhile.  At first, it's a little uncomfortable, but after awhile you get used to it.  Trust me, a little bit of discomfort at the beginning is worth the convenience of tampons! xoxo

How can I tell my mum
And
Is it ok to use tampons on ur first period cause I'm going to a bday party tomorrow and it's a pool party if I can how do u insert them.(ps I tried looking for the instructions but the box that I found at home was already opened and I can't ask my mum cause she's off at the store. Thanks in advance Smile :p

Hey girlie,

Just go for it! There's no good way to tell mom that it's started - it'll feel awkward and kinda uncomfy to tell her something so personal, so just take a deep breath and say it: "Hey mom? I think I got my period." She's had a first period before too, so she knows how you feel! <3 And you can definitely use a tampon on your first period if you and mom are comfortable with it. Take a deep breath, relax your muscles, and try reading these GL guides for some more tips. And don't be scared to ask mom for her guidance! You still have some time to practice Smile

Mod Mod Mod, please!
I really think I'm going to get my period soon, and so does my Mom. I have a couple questions, tho! I do competitive swimming, but I stopped doing it this summer, and I'm going to start again in August... will that delay my period even more? Also, I sort of PMS without a period! My discharge gets really heavy, I get mood swings, and cramps, and all of that. but still no period! Does that mean that I will get my period sooner? Thanks!

Hey girl,

Being active can delay your period, and discharge can mean your period is coming. But I can't predict when your period will happen, so the best option is to explain your symptoms to a doc to get professional advice!

k I know this is completely unrelated 2 the post but my friend has been acting weird lately. her dad was arrested about a year ago, and since then she's been different. she showed up 2 school with a cut on her leg and told this sketchy sounding story about how she had duct tape round her ankle randomly and she cut it off with a butter knife. recently she told me she was going 2 die at 21 and she's been asking really morbid questions. what should I do? I'm really worried

Hey girlie,

Personally, I would talk to someone about what she's been saying. Whether it's one of your parents, a school counselor, a trusted teacher, your school nurse...WHOEVER... tell them what she's been saying and how bad/dangerous it sounds. Tell them you're concerned and you want to make sure she isn't alone in all of this. She's clearly going through some tough times and she's probably saying these things to get a reaction from people. But you can't take a chance and just shrug it off - tell someone just in case she's in a really bad place. That way, someone can help her with a more positive outlook on life! <3

I'm 13, I weigh ((weight omitted by mod)) lbs, I have a TON of pubic hair, and I get so much discharge, and I wear a 34A bra. Will I get my period soon? Also, I was wondering, I get PMS symptoms without the period! When my Mom get's her period, I get really cranky, mood-swingy-ish, and sometimes I get cramps. Does this mean I will get my period sooner? Also, I am a competitive swimmer, but I haven't really been going... I am going back in August. Does being active really delay your period? And how long? Sorry this is so long Laughing Thanks!

Hey girlie,

Unfortunately, there's no way to predict exactly when you'll get your period. Even your doctor can't guarantee when you'll get it! But it sounds like you are going through puberty normally and you're on your way! Girls get their period at all different ages, so try not to compare to other friends/family members or even worry that you haven't gotten it yet. You sound totally healthy! If you have any further questions though, chat with your doc for more info Smile It's totally possible for you to have mood swings right now even without your period - your hormones are going crazy since you're going through puberty, so "PMS" symptoms can happen. As for being active, usually it's mostly changes in your lifestyle (diet, sleep patterns, stress, weight) that can delay/speed up your period. But everyone's body is different and it won't delay it by a LOT (not months or years). Usually, it's just a few days each month Smile

So this weekend my period will probably be a little heavier so will lights be enough? Or will they leak? Im really worried because i dont like bigger ones!

Hey girl,

Unfortunately they don't really make pads specifically for sports (like they do with tampons), but there are definitely certain brands that work better for athletes! But we recommend Always Infinity pads because they are thin and also protect against leaks, or Stayfree pads with thermocontrol technology - they help keep you dry and cool, even while you're sweating with a heavy period Smile It also REALLY helps if you wear a tight pair of shorts (like spandex) on top of your undies but under your gym shorts - it helps keep the pad in place so you get less leaks!

My mom told me that when your on your period you can still get in the pool without using a tampon because the water somehow stops the flow. She said that she even tried it and it worked! Is what she said true? Smile

Hey girl,

Unfortunately, that isn't true Frown Check out this article:

http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/07/30/005-period-advice.aspx

It might seem like your period slows down in water, but it only seems like that at first. You might get lucky and make it without a tampon, but you could also have a major accident/mess in the water if you skip the tampon. I definitely wouldn't do it!

My period is coming every 2 weeks. Is that something to be worried about? Also I play basketball and my mom told me i should use tampons and i've tried but it hurts, any advice?

Hey girl!

Don't be worried, but make sure to let your mom know about its frequent appearances so that she can keep watch just in case she needs to talk to the doctor. You should be fine though. Tampons are super easy once you get the hold of them and I would definitely recommend them if you feel comfortable. If you apply  it correctly, they don't hurt. Ask your mom for help and also check out this link for tips:

But now I'm kind of worried because its been like two weeks since I should have gotten it and I havent..its like I skipped June entirely. Is this something to worry about?

Hey girlie,

Nope, nothing to worry about! It's common for periods to be irregular sometimes, especially during the first few years of getting your period. However, if you continue to miss periods, see your doc. It can be a sign that your body isn't healthy and you need to change your diet!

MOD MOD Okay so I got my very first period in May. It was around the 10th-20th (not exactly those amount of days, just somewhere in between that) and in July, I had my period from the 15th-20th. So in August, I was prepared and stuff to have it around the 10th-20th or so but I never had it. But now, it's the beginning of September, and I have my period. I got it about August 31st. Does that mean that' when I'll have my period next month, or was this whole thing just a weird mistake or something?!

Hey girlie, your period can take up to a year to regulate itself. And also remember that your cycle is 28 days and not a full month so it won't be on the same dates each month.

Hey girl, If you're planning to swim while you're on your period, you will need to wear a tampon, otherwise you'll have to sit out.  GL has some articles like this:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx that can give you the DL on tampons.  But I really encourage you to talk to your stepmom about it.  Believe it or not, she probably is aware that you're growing up, and she would certainly be more than happy to help you through this challenge of growing up.

Hey girl, unfortch, panty liners will get soggy and gross in the water so I don't think its a good idea to wear one. If your period is light, I think it would be okay to swim if you have a dark colored bathing siut, just go to the bathroom and check often.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD!
I just turned 12, I'm going into 6th grade. I'm the only one of my friends who have my period. I hate every part of periods. Headaches, cramps, not being able to swim (Scared of Tampons, tried to try them, ugh!), boobs feeling like they'll fall off, I HATE IT! MY friends are all blabber mouths and I keep in touch often and they ask why I'm so mature acting and moody. If I told them that I had my period, they would understand. Even if they promised not to tell anybody about my period, she would tell her BFF, then her BFF and on and on. I haven't told them so far, but scared to do much around then. Help!
P.S. I was on my period at one of my friend's b-day parties, she lives down the street and we had a water balloon fight and then we rode our bikes down to my house and we all jumped in my pool, and I think they might of found the pad that I wore! Help again!

Hey girl, It's normal to feel embarrassed about your period but try to think about it this way- yes you may be the first one of your friends to get it, but when they get their periods they're going to come running to you for advice and tips because you'll be the pro! Periods take a little while to get used to, and the thought of using tampons could be scary or difficult in the beginning.  With time your friends will catch up to you, but for now if you don't feel comfortable telling them, you don't have to.  When you feel yourself starting to get moody, try reminding yourself why you feel this way. If you remind yourself that you're just PMSing, then it can help prevent you from acting out and behaving in a moody way around your friends. Good luck, hang in there.

When your trying to put in a tampon, you have to remember to relax! Stressing yourself out is going to make it a lot harder to put in! If you can't get the tampon in, I wouldn't suggest wearing pads in the ocean, because then they will act like a wet diaper- not good.  So, give the tampons another try and hopefully you'll have more luck!

Usually when the blood is a darker color, it means that it might be a blood clot.  Don't freak out! It happens to everyone.  Because you get your period only once a month, there is build up in side of you, which might cause these clots.  If it really bugs you, you can definitely ask your doctor about it and they will be able to give you a better explanation! And, no! It's our job to answer your questions!

Hey girl, there are a lot of different pieces of skin around that area and the opening is kind of deep in there, near the bottom kind of towards your butt. I would recommend finding the spot with your finger first and then putting the tampon there rather than guessing with the tampon. You could also use a mirror to see if that helps you. Then, once you do that, make sure you are relaxed and kind of squatting a little, then push the plastic part of the tampon in as far as you can while still holding onto it (I would recommend plastic over cardboard, but if using cardboard you would do the same), push it in with the other plastic part, and it should feel like it's in the right spot. It will probably hurt a little at first, but that feeling goes away once you use them a few times or so.

Hey girly! I wouldn't worry about it too much. After all, this is your first period, so I'm sure it's going to be irregular for some time. Also, your family history (like your mom and sisters' flows) probably is having an effect on yours. As for tampons, I've heard that the Kotex ones are good. I personally use tampax pearl, but I'm sure they're all good!

Hey girl,

Yes, a tampon can break it if you haven't already broken it. Remember though that a lot of things can do it - sex is the "main" way that people think of it breaking, but it can also be from stuff like bike riding, cheerleading, horseback riding, etc.

Hey girl, you're right, you can't force your friend to do anything. But just be supportive, and tell her it's not scary or hard to do once she gets more comfortable with it. Just keep recommending she gets more comfortable with them, but she doesn't have to use tampons the whole time at camp if she doesn't want to. It's just easier in certain situations. Good luck!

Hey girl,

Do you feel comfortable trying them?  Have you tried tampons in the past?  Start with light or normal sized tampons first to get used to using them {inserting them, the feel of them once they're in, taking them out}, then move to super if you need them on your heavy days. But remember to use the lowest absorbancy necessary to reduce your risk of TSS! Ultimately, it's a personal decision whether or not you should use tampons... it's up to you!

MOD I am not as much scared to insert a tampon as too remove one. It seems so weird pulling something like that out of my vagina. I don't want fear to stop me from taking it out ands getting TSS. How does it feel? Should I be worried?

Hey chickie,

No, you shouldn't be worried!  The first time you pull it out, you might experience a tiny bit of discomfort because it has absorbed liquid from your period and has grown a bit in size.  But when you keep your muscles relaxed and you take deep, calming breaths, it doesn't feel as bad!  And the more you do it, the easier it is and the "less weird" it feels, promise Smile tampons are so much more comfy in my opinion, so it's worth the discomfort at first to get used to it!

3. my period is still kinda irregular, and usually it starts on the same day but sometimes not. if it starts, i usually dont notice it till about mid-day bcuz it takes a while to get going in the morning. is it ok to wear a thin tampon and put it on in the morning on the day it is suppossed to start, even if i dont see any blood yet? p.s. i would just put a pad on but we will be swimming and hiking and itll b rlly uncomfortable.
thx in advance u MODS r great!!!!

If your tampon leaks, it probably just means your flow is heavy, and the tampon can't absorb it all (not a big deal!) That's why tampon has all different types- light, regular, super...you've got it all! And don't worry about your camping trip- just bring like a little ziploc baggie with you, and everytime you go to the bathroom, wrap your tampon and pads with toilet paper, just so no one sees what your doing! Don't let mother nature get in your way of fun- you can still swim, hike, and have fun at camp with your period!

Hey girl, when you use tampons you don't have to take them out to pee because the pee is coming from a slightly different place. However you should change your tampons at least every 4-6 hours, or more often if you have a heavy flow. Vanessa J.

Yep, no worries girl! You are completely normal. Our periods can be pretty irregular for the first year or so of having them.

Is it as hard as it looks to put a tampon in? My friend, who's been wearing tampons for like two-ish years says when u do it for the first time, you need to be at home. is this true? I'm going to camp in a few days so i need to know. thank you!

Hey girlie, Using a tampon isn't really a big deal. You might be more comfortable trying it at home the first time. read this! http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx

i was just wondering what the best way to remove hair down there was b/c i have allergic reactions to waxing and hair removal creams don't work efficiently and shaving gives me major razor burn and its hard to wear a bathing suit without removing the hair any tips...?

Hey girly, It seems like you've tried out all your options. I think that if you're sensitive to waxing or hair removal creams, shaving is def the way to go. Trim the hair short before you shave it, and make sure you're using a new razor -- there's less chance of you getting razor burn that way. Also use a ton of shaving cream (try a kind made for sensitive skin). Good luck!

I don't know what I'll do if I do get my period then. I know I could sit out but then everyones going to be asking me why I'm not in the pool. Help me please.

Hey girl if you sit out you don't have to tell everyone that you have your period.  When your friends ask, just say you don't feel well or have a stomachache or somethin.  But you can also try swimming with a pad.

MOD!
I'm 16 and I found out my sister (will be a sophomore in college next year) was anorexic and bulimic for 2 years during high school. She also told me that she smokes weed, hookah, and cigarettes. And on top of that she told me that she's had sex before when just a year ago she was completely against sex before marriage. I feel like I don't know who she is anymore. I found out she's been smoking cigarettes since spring and she told me that she would quit before summer is over but last night I smelled smoke on her and I told her and all she said was "So? I don't care." I know that it's not my problem, but I don't think she realizes how much it affects me. I'm having to hide all these secrets from my parents, too. The only thing I want is for her to stop smoking (cancer already runs in our family). Help please. Thanks.

Hey babe, I'm sorry your sister has changed so much.  If she doesn't "grow out" of these habits soon, you need to tell your parents.  She's doing a lot of unhealthy things, and some are even illegal.  She will be more likely to change if your parents are involved since they have more power.

Okay so I've had my period for almost two years and it's been normal for a while. I was telling my mom how bad it was yesterday and she said it wasn't normal for my age. It's about 35 days between the start of each which is torture near the end. And then it lasts for 7 days, with the first 5 keeping me in so so so much pain, tylanol doesn't even help! Is this normal? If not, what should I do?

MOD!! I started my period last november and I don't get it every month yet but i've probably gotten it 6 times. (Today starts my 6th) Well it's really light ALL the time and I don't know why it would b like that. I told my Mom about it and she doesn't seem conserned but idk what to think. I was also wondering what's a good brand/kind of pad that's good for light periods. I use regular flow pads cuz thats all we have (bc i have a sister and thats what she always needs) but I don't like wearing bulky regular flow pads when I don't need them. Also I've tried just using pantie liners but it doesn't cover enough space in my underwear so it leaves a mess. Sorry 1 more thing. What's an excuse I can tell my brother when I can't go swimming with him. I really don't feel like explaining the whole period thing to him. Thanks!

Hey chica! Don't worry. Everyone's flow is different, so it's totally normal to have a light flow. As you get older, it might increase, or change some. As for pads, you could try Always Ultra Thins Smile

I'm going to camp for a month this summer and i'm eventually going to get my period sometime during it. At my camp we have to attend the swimming lessons everyday and i can't really do that while i have my period. I'm not afraid of tampons or anything but i can't use them at all! I've tried over 6 times and it's like they just aren't meant for me. And I've also tried different kinds like the slimmer ones and the teen beginner ones. Is there any other way that I can swim during my period without a tampon? Or is there some sort of solution?
Thanks

I don't think there's really much way to swim without a tampon- maybe you're tensing up too much when you try to put it in — if you don't give it a big enough spot by tensing your muscles (because you're nervous) then there isn't enough space. Maybe you could talk to a counselor and see if there's something else you could do during the swimming lessons that day.

and one time she told me that tampons were typically for high school girls and that's the average age to start, is this true?

I don't know if there's an average age but I don't think most girls use tampons right away after they get their periods just because it's kind of new and different. It's probably different for every girl, though.

you guys are all a bunch of biased moderators. you don't say it like it is, you choose your side and broadcast it on the web. you are all like "edward left her in a depressed state" and if you read the book you know that he had to, because it was best for her. and you guys are basing who you like by the picture in the magazine, and not the attitude in the book. and this isn't the only situation where you guys have been known to be such biased moderators. i remember back during the election, you were ALL for obama, not even listening to the politics of these things. you just went "well he is young and all my friends are going to vote for him". has anyone ever told you that young is not always good? young means no experience. he was in the senate seat for what? a year? (if that). seriously, look at the facts before you post it for people to base there opinions. you do know that your decisions actually effect people, right? well, if you don't, you are going to need a serious brain adjustment.

Hey girl, I'm not really sure what you mean by some of your complaints, but I'm sorry you feel this way. Remember, moderators don't write the articles, we are just here to help you girls and answer your questions. I'm sorry you think we're biased, but we're individual people who do have opinions. We do know you girls listen to what we write, so we do check our facts and make sure what we say isn't hurtful or will harm anyone. We're here for you girls so I'm sorry to have disappointed you, but we'll keep trying to do better.

When I wear normal tampons I can only leave them in for two hours at a time before they start leaking, am I doing something wrong? How long should I be able to leave one in for?

Hey! Everyone's different so for you maybe 2 hours is your limit. As long as it doesn't hurt you aren't doing anything wrong Smile

okayy this might be kinda long..
so 1) im like really lonely. i dont have a whole lot of friends. on my cheer team we all get along but im..different from all them. idkk how to explain it but it feels like i never quite fit in with them. i feel like i have to prove myself 'cool' enough to hang out with them which i dont want. i have a couple good friends but they go to different schools and im always so busy that we cant really hang out a whole lot. 2) i feel sometimes like my family doesnt really appreciate me. i do everything around my house. i clean the whole house frequently i keep it clean i cook sometimes i do everything my parents ask. like..i feel like i do everything and nobody appreciates it. they say "ohh it looks so good in here.... but u forgot to clean the windows." or something like that. and they leave things dirty assuming that im gonna pick up after them..which i will but still dont want them to expect me to do it. and so i just dont know how to tell them that. and 3) according to my family im like..boring. they basically tell me all the time that i dont have enough fun and that all i do is study and work and stuff. which is true i guess. but i dont mind it. so it bothers me that they care so much and i dont. like the other day my parents made me go to this party that i knew i wouldnt fit in at. and i went and i didnt fit in (shocker) so like i just want them to accept me the way i am. they tell me to be myself and then when i am they try to get me like everyone else. soo..i just dont kno how to tell them that either i guess...anyways. help!!! sorry its so long(:

Hey! 1) I think you should ask your close friends when they can hang out. Communicate about your schedules and maybe you guys can organize a weekly or monthly meeting time to hang out and catch up. That should help with the lonliness until you make more friends. To do that just  keep putting yourself out there to people at school, it may get frustrating, but it'll pay off eventually. 2) Just stop doing as much around the house. Your family will notice the difference and if they say something just calmly tell them that you didn't feel appreciated for the helpful things you did around the house. 3) If your family keeps pressuring you into social situations you don't want to be in, tell them that you might be interested one day, but for now you like to study and that's just who you are. Let them know that your hard work will pay off in school and in life and remind them that they want you to be yourself, and that's what you're doing. Hope this helps!

Thanks!

Hey! Yes you can put a tampon in, that would solve your problem and be 100% effective. Also when you're underwater it often stops or slows your flow. Good luck!

Mod Mod Mod~ So I was going through my office supplies and stuff, to organize and also find some stuff to throw out. I was openining a little box that had mini highliters in it and I broke my nail. Like, REALLY bad. I've it happen before where it was low, but this is the worst it has ever been. I'm wearing a bandaid right now so that I don't have to look at it and so that nothing gets into it, but I can't leave the bandaid on forever. Is there anything I can get that will help the nail grow faster?

Gosh, I'm so sorry!  I'm sure that really hurt, and it's a pain to deal with.  I don't know of any treatments that truly work to make the nail grow faster.  For now, cleaning it off and covering with a band-aid is the best.  And it sounds crazy, but making sure you eat nutritious foods - including a good amount of protein - will help make sure your nails are strong and healthy.

Hey girl!  I know what you mean - it's fun to relax, but you also want to have some summer adventures!  Even if you don't have a lot of BFFs, you can still call up the Fs that you do know to have some fun.  Think about what kinds of things you'd like to do before you move - like going to your favorite places in town.  If your buds are all busy, you can always ask the fam to go with you.

My once "best friend" all of a sudden stopped talking to me and my family all together. I actually don't mind it because she is selfish and rude. However, now she is bringing my mother into the mess by saying that she treated her wrong when she did nothing. How do I set this girl straight? She's intent on ruining everything.

That's awful! Mostly I would just ignore her, but if you want, you can defend your mom with a quick sentence and don't get into a fight or anything like that. Don't raise your voice and remain the stronger person. It doesn't seem like this girl is worth your time anymore based on all the things she has done.

Thanks sooo much (: now i know what i need to do at the beach Smile

I definitely like going in the ocean, and maybe you could bring a boogie board, because that's really fun! You could bring a towel to lay out on the beach and bring an issue of GL (the new issue comes out July 13!) or a book to read. You could go for a walk or run. Or, you could dig a hole in the sand, build some kind of cool sand sculpture or get together a game of volleyball (even if ya don't have a net.) You could also bring a frisbee or badminton/tennis rackets. Have fun!

Though TSS is rare, it may be under reported. Philip Tierno Jr., chief of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University Medical Center and a leading authority on tampon health risks writes in his recent book, The Secret Life of Germs:
“the number of current cases of TSS is underreported, perhaps significantly so. In 1989, only 45 cases of menstrual TSS were reported to the CDC. But to be reported to the CDC, an incidence of TSS must meet what is called a strict case definition...For every case I see that meets the CDC’s strict case criteria, I see five or more that fit the clinical bill.”
Dr. Tierno notes that over the past 30 years he has never seen a single case of TSS resulting from the use of a pure cotton tampon.
Organic cotton tampons, like those made by Seventh Generation, contain 100% pure cotton grown without pesticides and not bleached with chlorine. Vanessa J.

Maybe since you're not that close, you could try to become better friends with him first and get to know him. You don't want to risk a good friendship by asking him out now, especially since you would feel crushed, but maybe you can try to hang out and then he might start seeing you as a friend and maybe a crush too! Summer's here, and me and my friends go swimming all the time. I'm nervous about wearing bikinis. I know this sounds silly, but I have a bit of a flabby stomach, not too much, but it's not flat. A lot of my friends are skinny and wear bikinis all the time. I think I could wear one, but I would be nervous about what other people think. Should I still wear a bikini?

You should only wear one if you would feel comfortable.  If you think you'd spend the whole time hiding your stomach or crossing your arms, don't.  But if you stand up straight and confidently, who cares what anyone else thinks?  Plus, good posture can make you look a little leaner.

Hey your flow tends to slow when you're in the water, but don't go without any protection at all.  If you have a light period, you might be fine with a light pad or pantyliner.  But if you think you're ready to try tampons have your mom pick some up for at night when you're out of the water.

You shouldnt be scared of tampons. It does take some practice but they are better than pads and you really need to start using them if you want to swim on your period.

You dont loose your virginity from using them and talk to a friend if you need to. But you can also go online and see demonstrations on how to insert them. You should only practice with a tampon if you are your period. But I recommend,

1. Doing it in front of a mirror a few times. It seems strange but you can see how they go in and how to place your fingers.
2. Use lubricant like KY Jelly or Astroglide on the end to help them glide in easier. Where I get my lubricant they sell it with the tampons now so you dont have to go to the condom aisle.
3. Buy the slender ones first, they go in easier.
4. Talk to friends on how they started.

We all had to start somewhere. And I havent been using them for very long but it seems like I have, so you pick up on how to do it very fast.

Hey girl, the best weight for each individual is based on their age as well as their height. It'd be best to talk to your doctor to make sure you're on track.  Or try calculating your Body Mass index (BMI), 97.6 may be slightly underweight, but it's best to check your BMI for guess-timate!

Hey girl! It's worth trying to use a tampon, and once you're comfortable using them you can hardly feel them. It may be uncomfortable for the first couple times, but it's worth it so that way you'll be able to swim freely without worrying about leaking or having an embarrassing sitch at the pool.

Hey! can youu help me? i have a really bad sunburn so i have been putting aleo vera on it. but its getting all goopy and layer-y on my skin. do youu know anyway to get all of the old aleo off without it hurting bad? thanks!

Sure, try wetting a soft washcloth with warm or cool water (whichever feels best on the burn) and gently wiping you skin. You could also use a little soap, but the wet washcloth will probably get most of it off. Good luck, hope the burn gets better soon!

MODMODMODMODMOD!
ok, so i moved to a new city 3 years ago. today me and my family are going to see our old friends who used to be my BFF (boy and a girl). i'm really nervous because i don't know what to talk to them about! we've all changed so much, and i don't know how to be comfortable around them. HELP!

Hey girl, it might be kind of different at first because you're right, you've all probably changed a lot. But maybe try bringing up old memories or things you did together. Reminiscing about the fun you had is something you all have in common, and that will start other conversations. Good luck!

Hey girl, definitely try to go the lake, that sounds fun! But if that falls through read a good book, start a project at home, or see if you can hang out with a friend. Good luck!

im on my period, a couple days ago it stopped, came back yesterday, stopped for like 12 hours, and now im spotting. is this normal for it to stop and come back again?? thanks!

Hey girl, if you've recently begun your period (like in the last year or so) it's totally normal for that sort of irregularity. Eventually your body will get used to have a regular monthly period, but it might take a little while.

i have a few things, okay one: i just got a blackberry curve yesterday. i wanted the purple one sooo bad, but theyre werent any available. i wanted to just have them order it, but then the sales man kept saying that it was bad cuz it was soo bright you couldnt read the keys easily, but i looked at the one in the show area and it was fine!! how can i convince my mom to let me go back and trade in my black one for the purple one? theyre the same phone, just different colors.. is it even possible to trade them in? i got a pink cover for it but i dont like the way the covers feel! and 2: im going to target/walmart on friday, what colors are really in for clothes? and what kinds of clothes are really in? IM also thinking about getting jewlery and a purse. what styles are in for jewlery, clothes, and purses? are there any MUST HAVE items that i should get? thanks!

Hey girl, you might start to like having the black phone with pink case. But if you're really insistent on getting a purple one you could ask your mom if you could try to exchange it. I have no idea if you can do that or not, but it seems possible. For shopping get bright colors for the summer, and good neutrals too (like whites and pale tans). Check out the GL site's Style section for lots of new looks that are in right now. Good luck!

i absolutly refuse to use tampons. is that normal?

Hey, it's totally okay to prefer pads over tampons. But sometimes you might need to use a tampon, like if you're in the water. You don't have to rush into using them, but you might want to try them out eventually so you're prepared if you need to use one.

MOD MOD MOD ok i have to Q's:
1). I sent a question into bod like last month and iit was never answered. Why is that?
2). I just got my hair sut and it looks uber cuuuute! where are some places to get pretty, wide head bands for under $15?
Thanks xox

Hey girl, I'm sorry, I don't know why your question wasn't answered. It could've been a computer mix up if you asked a moderator. For the head bands I would look in Target. Good luck!

Hey girly, I think the best thing you can do is just be confident in your soccer skills! And remember that no one is judging you as much as you think they are!
