Secrets to Major Confidence

Having killer confidence is easier said than done. Being you is hard when every classroom poster says to be unique and everything else about school screams “FIT IN!” Everywhere the same advice gets repeated like a broken record, and after a while, it sounds meaningless. Here’s why it’s not. GL’s breaking down the five biggest confidence clichés.

Be Yourself
In high school, appearance plays a huge role and can dictate the friends you make. Kids get ridiculed all the time for their fashion choices and it’s pretty much the worst. But, if you don’t participate in the gossip, you won’t care if you’re subjected to it. Rise above drama and be the girl who looks different because she puts her opinion first, not because she’s looking for attention.

Smile!
Do you ever get a concerned “What’s wrong?” in the hallway when you’re feeling fine? That’s means it might not be so bad to hitch on a grin between chemistry and algebra. You’ll be surprised at how much smiling can not only uplift your own spirits, but attract positive people. Translation? You’ll be approachable, which leads to more friends.

Reach for the Stars
A girl with goals is both motivated and driven, and other people are drawn to that. So sit down, pen in hand, and jot down three goals—one for the week, one for the month and one for the year. When you achieve smaller goals, the bigger ones become totally doable. Accomplishments are the chicken soup for the self-esteem, and if you make yourself happy first, you’ll be happier in a group.

Practice Makes Perfect
An older, wiser woman once said, “Only perfect practice makes perfect.” That’s the truth. You won’t get better at something unless you really try, and only you know if you’re putting in enough time. Gaining confidence in school is just as important as it is with friends and boys, so try, fail and then try again.

Kill ‘em with Kindness
Getting what you want in life is largely about how well you communicate with other people. The impression that other people get around you is a big factor in how they treat you. If you’re ever faced with a tough sitch, or even a not-so nice classmate, teacher, whatever, tackle it/them with as much sweetness as you can muster. You’ll be surprised at how just your ‘tude can win over the toughest opponents.

Girls who drip with confidence make it look easy, but that’s the biggest secret. They can be just as insecure as everyone else, but they know how to handle situations. You are your own worst critic, and making the leap from second guessing everything you do to sashaying through the halls is daunting. Try to make yourself happy first and other people will follow naturally.

hey girls! something that always makes me feel better is to write 'perfect' on the inside of my wrist with a heart underneath (in pen). my BF did this once, to show me he loves me and thinks i'm perfect and now i almost always have it written there ;)

Hey girl, by resting it and drinking lots of fluids: it sounds like you're recovering from something and that takes time and care.

I just saw this article last night, came back this morning and based a post from my blog to what it's said here! It's really helped me personally because I have VERY low self esteem. I'm always crawling to get others attention so someone can pay attention and care about me for a minute. I live for those moments. I know it's bad and I want to change it. I want to change a few things, quite a few things about me and me personality by New Year's......or work up to it so I'm ready to tackle even the toughest sitches by the upcoming year. Please check out my blog! I've created it for girls just like you! Type in trueblueabbi-then blogspot-then you know what's after that. ;) -Love aBBi giRL

MOD
This school year ( junior year) I really want to be more confident. I'm a bit of a bookworm and I'm kind of shy, but mostly I just don't speak when I don't have to. Only when asking questions, and stuff like that. Anyways, I realize the reason I don't enjoy high school is because I don't have any real friends in my classes, that are actually my friends. Like I may talk to someone, but when the teacher says to pick partners, they will go with their 'true' friend.

Hey girlie, it's great that you want to be more confident by the first step is believing in yourself and networking. Girls life have a ton of article regarding the getting ready for school check out this link:  http://www.girlslife.com/admin/Comment.aspx?id=1111823

During the interview theyre just going to ask you questions like your employment history and parts of your personality that make you suitable for the job. It will be a very easy interview Smile promise you. As for the outfit wear nice shorts that are not jeans, with a nice top that doesnt show any cleavage or too much skin. As long as you look a bit dressy but not too fancy youll be perfect. Good luck! xoxo kerra

"live every day to the fullest" i want to do that but im not really sure how..? thanks sorry if its weird/confusing! Smile

Hey girly girl, sometimes it's easy to get caught in a rut. I'd start limiting yourself to only spending an hour on the computer each day, and then you can free up other time to do what you want. Also, you can make a list of things you want to do, or places where you want to go, and check them off as you can Smile

Hey girl, I'm not exactly sure what your specific situation is, but maybe you could talk to your mom and try to make a timeline for the future of when you can do these things, or write things on the calendar. If you set a specific date, it is less likely that the plans will change. You could also offer to do things with her so that you both are getting something done together.

MOD MOD MOD MOD im going into high school this year, and i tried out for the JV cheer squad and made it. My only problem is that cheer is no-cut, so anyone who isn't good is on JV. I don't want to sound mean, but I dont want to look like a dork on the JV squad. How can i hav fun with cheer without being worried how i look?

Hey girl, rather than focusing on how it's no-cut, focus on the fun you're going to have this year!! Most freshmen probably are on the JV team anyway, and then you'll be able to make a bunch of new friends. Also, you've already enjoyed cheerleading, so I'm sure you'll have fun doing that, too! I was cut from JV soccer as a freshman and then I made it as a sophomore. I still didn't play much, but my favorite part was being part of the team and the fun I had with my friends. Focus on enjoying your first year of high school, and you can also work on your skills to maybe make varsity next year! Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD hey im going to a shakespeare festival tonight and i dont know what to wear. not sure if it will be hot or cold. what should i wear?

I'm not sure, but usually it's nice to wear an outfit that's a little bit dressy if you're going to a play, but you don't want to overdo it if nobody else is. Maybe you could wear a sundress or cute shirt and skirt. Bring a cardigan or cover-up if you think it might be cold. You could also ask your friends/ family members what they're wearing.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD so yesterday i was in a show and in the morning during our dress rehearsal i got my period. later during the day i got a little bit of flow but not a lot AT ALL!! then i went at nite and the show started at 6:30 and i had no flow and then it went til 9 and i was dancing around nonstop and it still had like disappeared and over nite i had no flow either. im going to my neighbors pool party today--do i still need to wear a tampon? im still rly short and small and they hurt bc they barely fit me!!!!! PLZ REPLY! -jobrosrlife

If you think it's gone, you could probably risk going without one, but bring some just in case. You could also try light tampons. However sometimes if you don't have any flow it can be really hard to put a tampon in because it's too dry.

MOD! Okay really want to try out for like three sports and if I make the tream in my school then I will be staying after school and my parents are STILL hesitant to get me a phone! HELP? any tips?!

It sounds like it would be a good idea for you to get a phone. Make sure that when you talk to them you are grown-up, respectful and polite. You could explain that it would be much easier for them to pick you up, and both of you would have to wait less often, if you were able to contact them on a phone. When I got my first phone, I got a "Tracfone," which was a Pay-as-you-go thing. Maybe they would be OK with letting you start out with a cheaper phone like that and then maybe you could move on to the kind of phone yo uwant.

Maybe you could sew on patches or buttons or something like that; or you could use the kind of buttons that are circles and have a metal thing on the back (like campaign buttons, but you could find a cute pattern).  If you're allowed to permanently paint on your backpack, you could use fabric paint or maybe acrylic paint to paint designs. You could also tie on a cute ribbon.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Whenever I wear a bikini my mom makes me feel bad. She always tells me things like "you can't put pictures of you wearing a bikini on facebook (they are when I am swimming with my friends not bad pics)" or "now you are turning into one of Katy Perry's 'California Gurls.'" It makes me feel like I am doing something wrong or naughty. I just feel most comfortable in bikinis (the one I have isn't even a string bikini). She was even the one who bought it for me. How can I not feel as bad whenever I wear my bikini?

Hey girl, I don't think she's saying you look bad in a bikini or are being wrong or naughty - I think she just doesn't want a lot of your body to be exposed online. Still feel confident when you wear your bikini and know you're not doing anything wrong, but respect her rules about not posting pictures online.

MOD I was feeling kind of unappreciated or not wanted or friendless. I have many friends and most people think I'm nice although on the quiet side. But I'm feeling like I don't have any real friends. The friends I hang out with never ask me to hang out with them except for occasions like birthdays. I'm the one that always makes the plans. If there's a movie I want to see, I'll ask them. If I want to talk to them, I'll start the conversation. I never get that friendly text from one of them that goes hey how are doing? Or hey want to go see a movie with us? Or anything. I'm the initiator of all of those. One of my so called friends texts the whole time when we hang out. She talks to me and all so it seems fine, but then she'll be texting others in the middle of it. I don't know what to do. Help please?

Hey girlie, maybe the first thing to do is start finding some new friends. If the ones you have don't appreciate you then you need to find some who will.

Hey okay today I shaved my legs with a different razor then normal and now my legs are covered in a red, itchy rash!! I took some Benadryl but right now it isn't helping much. I used bic sensitive skin with aloe. The razor I used before was bic too but it was four instead of three blades. If you can tell me how it happened and how to prevent it next time that'd be great!!

Hey girlie, if you didn't use enough water while you were shaving or any shaving cream it might have irriated your legs, especially with the extra blade. Your rash should go away on its own in a couple days. Use a shaving cream next time you shave.

MODMODMODMOD- 1.i still havent got my june july magazine yet. is it gonna come???
2. idk whether i should go darker hair or blonder. im naturally brown hair but now its like redish...im peach skin hazel eyes and freckles...thanks sooo much(((:

Hey girlie, if you haven't gotten your June/July issue and you're sure your subscription hasn't expired you should contact the subscriptions department. I think you would probably look good with lighter or darker hair. Whichever you like better is the way to go!

I am so happy that this came out, because one of my goals this year is to be confident. I used to have no confidence whatsoever, plus I'm starting high school and I'm really nervous. Smile thanks GL!

I just got this new book called Bikini Bootcamp (which was featured in GL, actually!) and I'm really excited to use it. The thing is, it comes with a meal plan but some of the meals include meat. I can't use some of the recipes because I'm a vegetarian.
Do you think the exercise plan will still have the same effects even without their meal plan to go with it? I eat pretty healthy anyway.
Thanks sooooo much! <3

Hey girlie, instead of ignoring the meal plan entirely, you can replace the meat with things like tofu. For every meat, there's a meatless substitue.

MOD!
i HATE my smile. i hate it. i only like it when its completely real, so if i smiled when i walked down the hallway people would be wondering whats wrong with me. im totally more confident when im not smiling. i want to like my smile and stuff, but i dont know how.

Hey girlie, your smile can't be that bad. And if you dislike it that much stand in front of the mirror and practice new ones until you find something that comes naturally and your comfortable with.

Being nice is one of the hardest ones. You have to be the mature one in every situation.

I was invited to a party tonight by one of my friends. Shes a sophmore in high school and I'm just going to be a freshman. Shes had a party similar to this one before that I went to and I was really awkward because I only sorta knew some people. I want to go, because its something to do. But I really hate the awkwardness. Should I go anyways? What do you think? Thanks! (:

Because you've been to a party before, I definitely think you should go tonight! Because you'll know what to expect, try and make some new friends tonight.  Put yourself out there, and chat it up with some people you'd like to get to know!  Since you'll be a freshman this year, it could be cool to have older friends to show you around! Just be friendly and talkative, that way, it won't be as awkward!

Mods!!! My confidence problem is because of guys. How can I be mire confident around them? And care less about what they think of me?? I think I care so much about what they think because I want a boyfriend. I get sooo stressed when ever I'm around the guys i like. How can I get over this??

Don't focus on how your acting, because then you'll get nervous! Just be your normal you, and treat them as friends.  If you become "one of the guys" they'll see how cool you really are! Don't feel as though you need to impress them to get a boyfriend.  Once they realize what a cool girl you are, they'll all be wanting to date you! You just have to have confidence, and don't let them know you feel uncomfortable.

I just finished cleaning out my room, and its clean...but boring. There's nothing on the walls or in my room. Do you have any ideas on how to decorate it?

Printing out pictures of you and your girls is one idea.  Or, if you have any colored paper laying around you could cut out some fun shapes to tape to the wall (I'm thinking hearts, flowers, stars, etc.)  Also, if you have any magazines laying around (maybe issues of GL), you could create some fun and funky collages with any pictures or words that describe you!

MOD MOD MOD MOD
I was on the phone yesterday when i realized i constantly kept cutting people off and interupting them with my ideas. I don't want that to be a problem nxt year during school and i feel like i might be doing it wthout knowing it...help! Question 2: I'm getting my hair done at Paul Mitchell Beauty school and my mom says they do good but I'm kinda scared. I want to get my hair done dark brown with medium highlights but right now my hair is black. How do i keep this from becoming a disaster? I look at tons of pics and am not sure of which will even suit me!
Thnx soo much for ur time,
WeeZy

Next time you're talking to someone, even if there is something you really want to say, wait your turn! And you should be fine with getting your hair dyed dark brown, especially because you have black hair.  They are professionals at Paul Mitchell and won't do anything you don't ask for.  Make sure you bring a picture along to give them some direction of what you want!
