I'm on a rugby team with all boys!

Six years ago I joined a recreational touch rugby team that goes on during the summer. I loved it because it was simple and uncompetitive, and being an average athlete didn’t feel bad. But now I'm 13 and I have to move up to the higher team that’s the best in the state.

I have asthma, and at the very first practice in the summer heat, it was awful! And to make matters worse, there’s only one other girl on the team. I'm not a bad athlete, but I was slower on the team compared to the boys and I had asthma attacks for the entire week after practice. I have practice today and I don’t know what to do. I hate being a quitter, but being slow is hurting my self-esteem. Help!

Hey girl,

I totally understand, I used to be such an awesome soccer player, and it just got too hard for me. And that’s okay – it just happens sometimes.

Don’t Give Up

The thing I regret most is giving up on my love for soccer. Even though I wasn’t the best player, I still had fun playing. That’s why I think you shouldn’t quit rugby. Play because you love it and it’s fun for you. Who cares about what the boys may or may not think. If you look at the game as a time for you to have loads of fun on the field, your self-esteem should remain in tact. Besides, give yourself some credit for keeping up with the boys.

Do Your Best

I wasn’t the fastest on my team either, but I tried and that’s what counts. I still got a lot of goals and made a lot great passes. Just give it your best, that’s all you can do. If you’re really worried about your speed, do some extra running exercises and talk to your coach to see if he can recommend any drills to help your agility.

Health Comes First

Before any game or sport, make sure that you speak to a doctor about your asthma. Let him know what sports team you are apart of and how much activity you do per each practice session. Also talk to your coach about your problem as well, so that he’ll have an idea of how far he can push you. Whether you’re as healthy as can be, or require a little less strenuous workouts, make sure you take a break and listen to your body when you need one. Nothing is more important than your health.
