I have been noticing in the shower that some of my hair has been falling out. It’s really scaring me.

Before ya jump to conclusions about this hairy situation, it’s important to realize that everyone loses hair—up to 100 strands per day, according to Dr. Jerome Aronberg, assistant professor of dermatology at Washington University, St. Louis. “Check that these hairs are from the roots, and not breaking off at the shaft.

If the hair loss is sudden and actually clogging up the drain, the usual problem is one called ‘telogen effluvium.’” Huh? Basically, your hair sheds prematurely, but will regrow. Dr. Aronberg compares the process to losing a baby tooth, and the new tooth comes in eventually.

But there are other causes for shedding, says Dr. Aronberg, so if you’re worried call around and find a derm who’s comfortable treating hair loss.
