How can I be more confident this new school year?

After this summer I will be heading into 8th grade. Last year in 7th grade, I felt like NO ONE had a clue who I was, but everyone knew who my best friend was. Also, every guy in the grade liked my BFF! I love my best girl and all, but seeing that she was pretty much a celebrity at our school and I was just a blade of grass gives me very low confidence and self esteem.

Next year I would really like a little more confidence and popularity and date a normal guy. What should I do? Grow my hair out and get highlights? Dress better? All I need is advice on how to be more confident.

Hey chica,

Whoa there! No need to do anything too drastic! It's true that to be popular you need confidence, but that doesn't mean you've gotta change yourself entirely. Everyone has different ways of gaining confidence, so the trick is to find what works best for you. Keep reading to check out different ways to gain confidence.

First off, try using imitation. No, this doesn't mean you should try to be something you're not. Instead, observe how the popular kids are confident. Then, see if you have a similar aspect that can help you with your confidence. For example, think about your friend for a moment. What made her so confident that everyone liked her? Was it the way she treated others? The way she talked? Sense of humor? In other words, take a good look at others and then a good look at yourself to find a part of you that people can admire.

Now you might be thinking, what if it was her looks that gave her popularity and confidence? If that is what you're thinking, then don't. Anyone can have the latest clothes, pretty makeup, or silky hair, but that doesn't give you any of the things you want. It's how comfortable you feel in your skin that determines how you carry yourself and how confident you feel around others. You can change the way you look on the outside (and c'mon, who doesn't like a change now and then?), just don't rely on that to change how you feel inside.

After you find what makes you feel comfortable, it's time to do a little makeover inside your head. For instance, the most important part about confidence is optimism. Tell yourself that anything is possible and stay positive. Believing that you are a blade of grass won't help. Believe that you are so much more and don't let your BFF's popularity get to you. That's something that's not under your control and something that shouldn't affect the way you feel inside.

Finally, when school starts up again, don't limit yourself to the people you know. Join a new club and sit at different lunch tables every now and then. This will let you practice your confidence around others and let others know how great you are.

i am going into 8th grade and i am pretty popular. This one friend of mine and I go to places alot with people outside of our school. I do not know why but she always makes me feel like im locked up inside i guess you could call it taking all the spotlight. When i look at her facebook wall she has sooo many posts from all these people that i have met before but end up likeing her better. She also gets comments on how gorgeous she is but i never do. I need some advice. Please help. Thanks.

I'm sure those people consider you just as good of a friend! Don't let it get you down.  Try writing on their wall to initiate the conversation.  And next time your hanging out with them, try to get one on one time with some of the kids, so you can have individual conversations with them, without having your girl steal the spot light!

I know this sounds strange, but I think I suffer from academic peer pressure. For example, today we got our schedule for school (haven't checked) but I can see my friends own on fb. Anyways, I've signed up for and IB Physics class, and my mind is telling me that I should just take regular physics and give myself a break (honor student). But I see all the advanced classes that they are taking and I feel inferior if I don't.
I'm going into junior year and with the ACT and college search, I wonder if I'm just wasting my time with all these classes. I know colleges like you take AP / honors classes ( which I do) but will one class matter?
There are these kids who take the highest classes and do fantastic, and I always feel in there shadow. Like no matter how hard I try I can never get there. I know that they have more help/friends, and I do school work alone (no real friends in grade/I skipped a grade), but is that really an excuse?
Am I being to hard on my self? Help!

I was in the exact same situation as you in high school. I always took hard classes and pushed myself but i was never the best so it was a bit hard. I say you keep trying your hardest and push yourself. It will be worth it when you get to college and dont have to take as many classes because you took them in high school. Kepp pushing girl, i know its hard but youll do great! Aim high. xoxo kerra

OKA so what's the difference between an eye pencil and eyeBROW pencil?

Eye-liner pencil is designed to highlight your eyes and is worn as close as possible to your lashes.  Sometimes people wear it in brighter or darker colors.  Eyebrow pencil is a pencil designed to fill in your eyebrows and define the arch.  The color is designed to blend with your eyebrow hair that is already there.

Im super nervous for 8th grade and that i wont have many friends. Right now i have lots of friends but it feels like i only have 2 or 3 good friends who actually understand me. and boys arent really friends with me and i really want them to be! what should i say to them to maybe start a convo? thanks!!!

Hey girl! Things change year by year, so just because you have a couple friends now, doesn't mean you won't have a bunch when the school year begins.  Be yourself, be friendly, outgoing, and make yourself approachable.  Try starting convos with guys about music, movies, or sports.  Try asking them questions about themselves, for example: Are you thinking about trying out for the team this year? , Or what's the latest song your band has been workin' on?
