Considering cutting class? You may be digitally tracked while doing so

No one will notice if you skip class, right? Think again. The New Canaan Public School System in Connecticut is experimenting with radio frequency identification (or RFID) tags, which give school officials the ability to track the location of students and teachers on school grounds.

Students’ movements and expensive school property like computers and equipment will be monitored through ID cards and tags, which have had RFID chips implanted in them.

Numerous students and parents object to the new policy, claiming that it is a drastic step and an invasion of privacy. The school system claims that implementation of RFID tags will make the school environment more secure while eliminating the possibility of students skipping classes or leaving campus.

Would you feel safer knowing that your school has the ability to track your whereabouts? Or do you feel that this is a breach of privacy? Blog it out, babes!

The people who want to skip will just take theirs off... I think it's a good idea, but it needs to be developed more to please everyone.

I agree with Joetta97- they should give the trackers to kids who have skipped class before, not to everyone. then maybe it would prevent the other kids from skipping b/c they don't want to get tracked!

We don't have that at our school, but we have the stupidest thing ever. They put up these cheap plastic circles on the ceiling that have absolutely no technological abilities whatsoever and they've tried to convince us that those are "cameras" just so we don't do anything bad in the hallways.

It's kind of wierd but good....... like if you're late and you say your locker was stuck or you were in the bathroom they can see if you really were and save you from a detention...... it is an invasion of privacy like if you're in high school and you leave something in your car and you go get it they might say your trying to cut class!

My friends are always in trouble for skipping class. At first, I tried to stop them, but now i tell them "Go ahead. It's your fault when you fail, and are stuck here for another year." Putting the idea of being stuck in my crappy school system for another year makes them go to class and actually attempt to pass. Now they mostly have "b" averages just because they go to class and do the work.

That is so dumb! At my school we take role in every class and over the computers it goes to the main office. If your name does not come up when it should they know you skiped. We also put out role lists that say who was there at the start of the day and if you miss a day of school you get a piece of paper that says you were gone so that your teachers know if you were gone or skiped.

I believe it's a good idea for the equipment. Graphing calculators alone can cost up to $150 a piece! As for the students it has it's advantages and disadvantages. Students couldn't skip class and kids couldn't get abducted as easily. but you sacrfice freedom and privacy. Does the good outweigh the bad? That's a matter of opinion.

Heck no! I mean they could be creepers! I think it's going overboard. I don't get adults sometimes..... but my private school is very tough on us on what we wear, like if our shirts aren't tucked in, or we aren't wearing belts with pants or shirts! UGH! No logos, nothing! Blue or white t-shirts, and 6-8 grade can wear khakis, but kindergarten-8th grade can also wear navy skirts or pants and shorts. Plus the skirts have to have shorts under them. Our new principal is going really too far on out rules, even the 2nd graders agree, and even grunted along with us when we heard the new rules! LOL! Laughing

i know they have a good reason but isn't kinda extreem?
anyway... my ss teacher said that when he was in 8th grade him and his friends tryed to cut and go to the mall- he didn't run fast enough and got a suspention for cutting and his friends said none of the stores were open and it was really boring.

report

i understand why they're doing this, but it's a little extreme b/c say you are at school but you got grounded and your mom has your phone and the school thinks you're somewhere else.
or you got sick and go to the doctor and you text your mom to say you're done with your check-up and the school catches it.
it's going to be quite innacurate and i think it's sort of an invasion of privacy.
just sayin.

That is INCREDIBLY creepy, and a total invasion of privacy. The school doesn't need to know where we are and what we're doing every second of the day. Honestly, that's abusing your power to the fullest extent. Just take attendance and be done with it. This is NOT necissary.

wayyy to close and personal! "oh look, this girl's in the bathroom right now" i mean, how weird is that!!!! my school just calls home if you miss a period and your parents can call to confirm if it's cleared or not and then you get in trouble if you ditched. if it happens frequently, and it's suspiciously "cleared" every time, the parent is asked to visit to make sure that they were the ones "ok"ing the calls.

I get what they're trying to do, everyone's parent wants them to succeed in life. But at my school, it's SO easy for ANYONE to skip. It doesn't help that there's two buildings to go in and out from and kids have so much freedom. There's really no adult watching right over them. But I guess it would also suck, if there was.

I think that the kids need to face he consequences of skipping themselves. I seriously don't know what goes on in there minds. Don't they wanna have a life in the future? What the heck do they think they'll do after high school?! Go to the woods and smoke weed?! [Yup, that's exactly what they do since our school is right next to it.] It's crazy.

It is a breach of privacy!!!! I would not skip class but i feel they should not have the power to trake you if you did nothing wrong. no one should be able to trak you without a juge giving them a warrant. I hate this idea!!!!!!!!

I def think its an invasion of privacy. There should be other ways to tell where students are. Plus, what if a student just leaves their ID card somewhere at school and sneaks off?

I think that they're trying to stop skipping class, but I think tracking down students is a little too much...

I think that it is waaaaaaaayyyyyy too extreme. Teachers take attendance for a reason. And, if your not at school cuz your sick, your mom or dad can always phone in.

I feel safe! The police have a classroom to themselves at our school to meet up and have some equipment just in case something happens around the area.

FIRST COMMENT!
haha

welll... i think that it would be pretty cool but most students are probably not thinking that cuz maybe they are the type to cut class and they wouldnt wantt o get caught. but really i would never. and probably a lot of other kids wouldnt either so it could be a waste. but maybe not . just its depending on the kids there i guess. but ithink parents of the kds would like it i guessi f they had a history of vutting classes. sooo idk

I think this is ridiculous! It is a complete invasion of privacy. What right does the administration have to always know your whereabouts? Do they really need to be able to see, "Oh look. Carrie's in the bathroom. Now she's walking into the hallway..." I mean, maybe something like having to sign in or out of a class when you leave the room, but having i.d. tags and chips? That's a bit extreme.

I think its one of those things for the best. On a noral day it could be really annoying, but it could prevent major disater. Like if a a student had a weapon and the school security knew who their name, they easily prevent a tragedy.

I don't see a problem with it. If students say It's an invasion of privacy then those must be the kids who are doing stuff in school that they shouldn't be doing.

MOD-

Hey girl, I am so sorry to hear about your friend's family's loss.  I imagine that it is such a difficult time for everyone involved.  I can understand the warning about doing something public, like writing on her wall.  You might consider making a card or bringing something over to her house to show the family you care.  Sometimes a small, personal action is the best.  If you see her, you can tell her that you are here for her and give her your number in case she needs someone to talk or just hang out with.  Wishing you all the best in this tough time, xoxo

Marie H.
