The nearest beach ten hours away? Want to end summer with one last day of surf and sand with friends and fam? Bring the beach to your backyard this Labor Day! Here’s how to get started…
The boardwalk sells lots of fries, pizza, hot dogs, burgers, saltwater taffy and ice cream. Fire up the grill and have a BBQ, order pizza from your fave pizzaman and buy ice cream with tons o’ toppings. Your local grocery store probably has some saltwater taffy for you to munch on—or whip up a batch at home.
The Surf and…
An easy way to bring the ocean to you? Set up a sprinkler, toss water balloons, shoot water guns and wade in a kiddie pool. Though nothing comes quite close to swimming in the sea, another way idea is to put some plastic fishies or seashells in the kiddie pool.
Sprinkle some sand in the kiddie pool, put some on tabletops, and even make a sand box or a mini sandbank. Get some sand toys and build castles. Have a contest to see who can find the most shells in under a minute. You can pick up a bag of sand at stores, like Wal-Mart or Home Depot.
Frisbee and beach volleyball are popular sports to play by the shore. Set up a volleyball net, or even some rope or an old bed sheet might do, between 2 trees or other sturdy objects and grab your volleyball or beach ball! Have a water balloon toss, capture the flag or have sand castle building contests.
Grab some beach towels and umbrellas and set them up. Crank up a portable radio, slap on some sunscreen and rock your sunglasses. To make it even more tropical, set up some fake palm trees and maybe print out some pics of the beach and put them in front of windows. Limbo is fun, and so is hula hooping!
