Should I dump my bragging best friend?

Check these out, too...

  • How can I get someone to stop texting and driving?
  • 10 things a best friend should never, ever do
  • My guy mocked my bestie...and now she won't talk to me
  • My bestie isn't acting like a very good friend
  • My friend sulks if I do better in school than her. Help!
My best friend and I have been friends for 6 years. The thing is, she is always trying to be better than me (and she's succeeding, too.). Whenever I do something or get something, she has to do or get the same thing, except bigger. If I go shopping, she goes shopping and gets more clothes. If I get concert tickets for second row seats, she gets seats in the first row. Then she starts bragging. She always says something like, "This is so cool and so fun. Too, bad you don't have it."

When I try to tell her that I feel as though she always has to be better than me, she gets defensive and starts insulting me, and it turns into a huge fight. I don't want to lose her as a friend because we have been friends for so long, but it's hard to be friends with someone who always one-ups me. How do I tell her that she is lowering my self-esteem because she brags about everything?

Hey girl, I know it’s hard to deal with a best friend gone bad. She’s your bestie and you don’t want to ditch her if you don’t have to. Good for you for trying to fix the sitch and keep your bud.

Switch Gears

Your friend sounds as though she might be dealing with self-esteem issues of her own. That could be why she feels the need to one-up you constantly.

The next time you talk to her, focus on your own probs. Don’t even mention that she’s the one sinking your self-esteem. Tell her that you feel as though what you do and what you have are never good enough, and you would be really grateful if she would try to help you lift your spirits.

Turn on the Charm

When you get a compliment, you feel pretty good, right? Good enough to pay it forward, I daresay. Boosting your friend’s sense of self worth by offering little comments—“That tee is so cool!”—could make her day better and, consequently, your own.

Know When Enough Is Enough

Hang in there and stick it out if you can. But if it gets too toxic, don’t be afraid to walk away. Some friends stay in our lives for decades. Others float through to teach us lessons before moving on. There’s no shame in ending a relationship, especially when a friend’s behavior is hurting you. Do what you can to salvage your friendship, but in the end, you’re the one that matters most.

MOD!
My BFF is really weird. She is loud and obnoxious and really embarassing. Alot of people dont like her because she is irratating and shes not a very good friend. She doesnt care about what I have to say she just waits for her turn to talk. Whenever I try to talk to her about this she gets really upset. I only like her because I need a friend and there isnt any better friends there for me. What do I do?

Hey girl,

This isn't a very good attitude about your friend! However, a good friendship does involve both people talking and listening to the other one. I know you've said you've talked to her before about not listening, but maybe you could let her know that it hurts your feelings when you feel like she isn't listening to what you're saying, or that you want to listen to her but you also want to be listened to. When she gets upset, you can let her know that it's OK and you are looking forward to the change in the future.

Maybe instead of focusing on her bad qualities and why other people don't like her, though, you can think of some of the things you like about your BFF. Somehow you became friends, so there must be something cool about her! Just because other people think she's obnoxious doesn't mean you have to think that, too! You could even try to prove them wrong by having fun with your BFF, which would show that she's a cool person to hang out with.

***MOD***MOD***MOD***
Okay this is going to be long, so my apologies in advance. I've always had a lot of friends. But I've never had any close friends. I have a lot of stress in my life and while girls dump gossip on my that I do NOT want to listen to, I keep quiet and keep my mouth shut. I finally found a great friend who wants to help me. My dilemma? She is always busy. She goes back and forth through boy friends, has band, softball, choir, cheer leading, and she has a super busy family. So she wants to help, but is always busy. I NEED to talk to someone. I need a friend but I'm starting to think I'll never have one. She is the best friend I have and I see her for maybe 10 minutes each day. Even if she does, by some miracle, finally get to talk one on one with me, how do I open up to her? I have very low trust in people.
I'm sorry its so long, but I need help :*(

hey when you get a chance to talk to her be like hey do you have a sec, i need to vent to someone? I'm sure she'll let you open up to her Smile

MOD MOD MOD MOD Why do people trust me with their deepest personal secrets? What if I accidentally let one slip? The girls at my school LOVE to gossip.(including me.. i know, pretty bad right?)It would eventually get back to the person who told it to me. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey girly! I already answered the first part of this question in your first post. I would try my hardest not to slip up. Gossip can be tempting, but it only comes back to hurt you in the end. After all, if the other girls are gossiping with you about other people, then they most likely would gossip about you too when you're not around.

MOD MOD MOD MOD Why do people trust me with their deepest secrets? Is it just my appearence or is it that I'm just that trustworthy? I have kept too many secrets!! What happens if I accidentally let one slip? HELP!!!!

Hey chica! It's probably because people feel comfortable with you, and feel like you're a good person. Which is a huge compliment to you, of course!

MOD MOD MOD MOD PLEASEE HELP! i have this friend who is acting so annoying! she always pushes me and my friends around and like since her locker is next to min she like pushes me into my locker, spins my lock around while im doin my combo so i have to start again, and takes my things from me at lunch or at my locker!!!!! i dont know if shes just being playful or mean! its so annoying! she can be my friend sometimes but when shes not i get so annoyed!!! sometimes i ignore her but she like pushes me until i talk!!!!!!!! i hate it cauz i always get hurt!!! ( not severly but like it just hurts for like a few mins) HELP ME PLEASEE!!!!

Hey girl, you need to have a heart-to-heart with her. Tell her what she's doing is hurting you — physically and mentally. She may not know her joking is going a little too far. If it's not joking, and she's doing it purposely,  I'd suggest sticking to your other friends. True friends don't treat each other like punching bags.
