Should I dump my bragging best friend?

Check these out, too...

  • How can I get someone to stop texting and driving?
  • 10 things a best friend should never, ever do
  • My guy mocked my bestie...and now she won't talk to me
  • My bestie isn't acting like a very good friend
  • My friend sulks if I do better in school than her. Help!
My best friend and I have been friends for 6 years. The thing is, she is always trying to be better than me (and she's succeeding, too.). Whenever I do something or get something, she has to do or get the same thing, except bigger. If I go shopping, she goes shopping and gets more clothes. If I get concert tickets for second row seats, she gets seats in the first row. Then she starts bragging. She always says something like, "This is so cool and so fun. Too, bad you don't have it."

When I try to tell her that I feel as though she always has to be better than me, she gets defensive and starts insulting me, and it turns into a huge fight. I don't want to lose her as a friend because we have been friends for so long, but it's hard to be friends with someone who always one-ups me. How do I tell her that she is lowering my self-esteem because she brags about everything?

Hey girl, I know it’s hard to deal with a best friend gone bad. She’s your bestie and you don’t want to ditch her if you don’t have to. Good for you for trying to fix the sitch and keep your bud.

Switch Gears

Your friend sounds as though she might be dealing with self-esteem issues of her own. That could be why she feels the need to one-up you constantly.

The next time you talk to her, focus on your own probs. Don’t even mention that she’s the one sinking your self-esteem. Tell her that you feel as though what you do and what you have are never good enough, and you would be really grateful if she would try to help you lift your spirits.

Turn on the Charm

When you get a compliment, you feel pretty good, right? Good enough to pay it forward, I daresay. Boosting your friend’s sense of self worth by offering little comments—“That tee is so cool!”—could make her day better and, consequently, your own.

Know When Enough Is Enough

Hang in there and stick it out if you can. But if it gets too toxic, don’t be afraid to walk away. Some friends stay in our lives for decades. Others float through to teach us lessons before moving on. There’s no shame in ending a relationship, especially when a friend’s behavior is hurting you. Do what you can to salvage your friendship, but in the end, you’re the one that matters most.

MODMODMODMOD!!!!! What does it mean when a comment is in parentheses?

Hey girl!  I'm sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you mean.  Sometimes people use parentheses in their comments when they are including additional information.

MOD MOD MOD! sry i keep asking for questions! well i tell my friend a lot of secrets... but over texts. she (lets call her "h") forwards me a lot of things other people say to her but the thought never occured to me she would do that with mine! so then today i asked her about this one thing. my friend (lets call her "e") in the locker room said AS A JOKE that she and h were talking about me at her house and that she couldnt tell me what it was they were talking about. i left the locker room before she did so she never got the chance 2 tell me it was a joke! so when i asked h she said it wasnt true and then i asked e and she told me it was a joke and then she told me that i told h that i said they called me the "b" word and a slut! and when i asked her she told me h forwarded that to her! thats not even close to wat i said! all i said was that she told me that they were talking about me! i told h i couldnt trust her since she changed and fwded my txt! should i dump her? HELP!

Hey girl, wow, that does sound confusing and frustrating.  I can understand why you would feel hard.  It also sounds like it would be really hard to get the facts straight with all this texting and forwarding going on.  You might want to talk to your friend and get the facts straight.  Once you get more perspective, you will be able to decide if it's worth giving this friendship another chance.  In the future, be wary of someone who forwards texts (and be careful what you send!).  xoxo

My friend does something similar to that too! She always tells me that her family might lose their house because they are so poor. I went to her birthday party this year and she got like $100, a laptop, an iPod touch, and a bunch of Justin Bieber stuff. I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like poor. She brags and shows off all the time. She always says she can get boys better and faster than I can. When she said that, I said "Well how come the last 3 times you asked a guy out, they rejected?" (btw, this is true) Then she just put on a little pouty face and stormed off. I even asked those 3 guys and they said they would rather date me than her. I am not trying to be talking behind her back, but if it is as bad as this, well honey, you got to let it out.
P.S. if anyone needs advice, I am good with it! <:~)->--< (this emoticon is trademarked)
