I Need Cash for Clothes

Check these out, too...

  • Drama with your mama? Spill the deets!
  • My mom read my diary without permission!
  • Tell us: Why is your dad the best ever?
  • Should I set up my sis with her crush?
  • Oy vey! Am I allowed to have this crush?

My family is going through a tough money situation so we don't have the money for me to buy clothes and I'm too big to wear my old clothes. Help!

Hey girlie, you're not alone. Almost everyone is having money issues these days, thanks to the economy. Our country is facing the worst recession since the Great Depression. But you don't have to be depressed about your money woes. GL is here to help you find cute outfits for less.

Make a game plan

Before you go shopping, it's always best to set a budget. Then make a list of items you absolutely need, such as jeans and a jacket. Shop for classic items that won't go out of style so you can wear 'em forever. Trendy clothes only last a season. A pair of dark rinse boot-cut jeans will always be in style.

Shop thrift stores

Yeah, I know what you're thinking: “Ew. Gross.” But it's not. Thrift stores are great places to find great clothes for cheap. You can also find unique and vintage pieces no one else will have. If you're lucky (and patient), you can even find some designer digs for less than half the usual price. Just make sure the zipper works, don't forget to check for holes and stains and wash before wearing!

Lend a hand

Your parents are probably even more stressed out about your family's money situation that you are. You can get a side job babysitting or tutoring to pay for things you want, like mp3s and posters. If you can't get a job, offer to watch your younger siblings and clean around the house for free. Trust me, they'll appreciate your help and you'll feel fab about doing good deeds.

My parents have a lot of bills to pay.. and i NEED braces and my mom JUST told me that we'll have to postpone them.. i can't even get something as little as a bag of chips at the store bc we're so short on money.. I'm going to be 13 in about a month and the only kind of job i can get is baby sitting.. But ever since i was born, my mom has done daycare at our house. She's been doing it for 30 years. So i can't be with kids all the time.. now i'm trying to find out what to be for Halloween.. any suggestions ? That's like cheap .. and anything that'll make me feel better about having no money ??

i am 13, and i am despratly in need of money...how can i get some?

Hey girlie! You can try babysitting or a dog walking service. They're a lot of people out there that are in desperate need of some help in watching their kids/dogs and are willing to pay good money for it

To make $$$ go to a goodwill and buy all of the videogames they have. (About $1.99 each) Then go to a gamestop. Sell them for about $5 each. That's $3 a game times 10 games is $30 profit!!!

I love thrift stores. At first, I did NOT want to wear clothes that used to belong to other people. Once I tried Plato's Closet, I was hooked. They have a lot of name-brand clothes, like Hollister and Aeropostale. I go shopping at Plato's almost every weekend with my friends and it's GREAT!!!

MODMODMODMODMOD!
I know a couple of married adults, and the wife bullies the husband to death. They are my neighbors, and I hate to see it when this happens. I know if you see kids bullying kids, you are supposed to get an adult, but what if adults are bullying adults? What happens then? And please don't tell me not to get involved...I can't just stand by and watch. I have to do something!

Hey girl, next time you witness this sort of thing, give your parents a heads up. Let them see what you're talking about. That way they can also judge for themselves. I know its a horrible, horrible thing, but you can't get involved in it as a kid. That would be very dangerous. Just let your parents sort it out =]

It's true, thrift stores can be really incredible. You can get half a dozen pairs of slightly used jeans for the price of one pair of new ones! Places like Goodwill take clothes you donate, so they can sell them super cheap.

Also, garage sales are great and can be even cheaper than gift stores! Money is a little tight, although not too tight, in my family as well and my awesome grandma buys about 90% of my clothes at garage sales. She even scored a pair of Levi's for me once for just a few bucks!

I know this seems super dorky, but you can make your own clothes in the same style as popular ones if you have a sewing machine, fabric, and thread. You won't be paying the store for the labor, profit, or advertising! There are also screenprinting kits available for making cute designs on T-shirts (just don't copy other people's designs exactly, as this might get you into trouble). Who knows, you could even start your own store someday!

Hey girl give him his space and time will let him heal, but in the meantime you can assure that everything will be okay and that he doesnt need to be so hard on himself. Do nice things for him that will cheer him up! If you are worried though make sure you talk to an adult about it.

I say give it to her in a xmas gift. That will be a good way to get it to her. Also you can get her a gift card. As for her not giving you a gift just tell her not to worry about it. Or that you like handmade things. That should keep the pressure off of her. xoxo kerra

Hey girl, I'm sorry to hear that money's tight.  If there's something you really need, like for school, talk to your mom about it and ask her to help you come up with a solution.  But if you like to babysit, why not try babysitting for family friends or neighbors?  Make fliers and spread the word.  Making money on your own might help you get some of the things you need (and want!).  xoxo

Thrift shops are the BEST! I have found the most amazing things there, and I get so many compliments. I found hollister jeans for a dollar, brands like banana republic and H&M, and even a Dolce&Gabanna skirt for $3!! You can also find the coolest vintage things. I got my homecoming dress for $5 and got it altered, so I got something unique for about the same price as a typical mall dress. Have fun thrifting =)

MOD!!!!! today there was a threat in the school bathroom that someone's gonna bring a gun and shoot everyone in the school tomorrow! there's gonna be really super tight security and we even saw an army truck there after volleyball practice today! we can't bring anything to school (no bags at least... i'm not sure about folders and books by themselves) and there's gonna be security everywhere. my parents aren't sending me to school (which i'm really glad about) but 1.) i'm really nervous for all my friends and 2.) what if this guy decides to do it another day instead of tomorrow and no one knows?!?!?! people might think i'm a sissy or something but i'm freaking out!! what should i do??????

Hey girly girl, you're not a sissy at all! Anyone would be scared in a sitch like that. I would imagine that security would be tight for weeks after this incident too. Of course, I can't say what's going to happen. But if someone were planning to do something, they why would they warn everyone? Many times, threats turn out to be just hoaxes by stupid people. I hope that's the case in this. And, I'm sure that your school authorities are doing everything they can to ensure that you're safe.

Hey girlie, I'm not sure about the hat but it sounds really cute. It would be your own unique style and just wear your normal makeup. I think this would work for a night out with your friends. It's probably too fancy to wear to school. It sounds best for 14-17.

MOD MOD MOD Sorry in advance about the length. Ok today I was in art and on of my "bff's" bf decided to sit at my table to be by his friend. Well i was sitting there and the one guy (let's call him S and my friends bf D) said "you like (and he said my crushes name) and then of course i said "no i don't" and then D said "M (his gf) told me who horsie is" (its his codenames...me and my friends make code names for the guys we like i know weird... of course i denied liking "horsie" and convinced them...i think. But then i went to my next class and i got really mad at my friend cause she told him and she promised she wouldnt. Shes really annoying and me and my other friends dont want to be her friend and this whole thing is annoying. And my mom doesnt want tp be M's friend. But she was crying when she called me so idk what to do! she has depression but she uses it for a excuse a LOT. What should i do??? SO sorry for the length...

Hey chickadee! First of all, code names is totally normal! Smile My friends and I used to do it all the time when we were in high school, and even college.

As for your friend, I would give it a few days. You have every right to be mad and angry, but don't be cruel. As in, don't get all of your friends to stop being nice to her. If you don't want to be friends anymore, you can still be nice, just gradually cut back on the time that you hang with her.

MOD! MOD! MOD! My mom wont let me babysit till I'm 13or maybe 14. How do I convince her that I'm capable of babysitting someone?

Your mom is probably just concerned that parents won't feel comfortable  with your age. Most look for someone a little older when considering candidates to be responsible for their children. Show your mom your up to the challenge by starting out as a mother's helper. This means that you watch the kids while the mom is still home and available, but busy doing chores or on the phone!

I shop at thrift stores all the time! You can actually sometimes find brand new things with the tags still on them! I even have found things from Delias and Delias is a pretty expensive store! I have also found things from Ambercombie and Aeropostale for only a dollar! You can also find things that no one else has! So you can get a good price on clothes and still have your own unique style! And no one ever has what you have if you shop at thrift stores! I think more people need to realize that not everything has to be brand new or name brand!

you just need to have a very calm discussion with your mom about this! just let her know that you think you are mature enough to  handle it. But remember, if you don't act mature when talking to her (i.e. yelling, whining, talking back, etc.) she's not very likely to see your side. No matter what though, make sure you respect her final decision. She is the mom after all!

Try thrift/consignment stores. my local one even has a system for everything they carry (books, dvds, music, games, clothing, etc.) where the tag they put on lists dates for when the prices will slash EVEN more. also, if that date is a week ahead,. you can have your item put on hold so nobody else can buy it. or even less than a week! Just one warning: some kids may see your designer designs are from like 3 years ago... but who cares! clothing!
