Haircut Horror Stories

If the thought of changing your ‘do makes you tremble in your tennis shoes, take a load off, girl, and read these three stories from chicks just like you who have been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale. Take their words of caution to heart to keep your hair hot, not horrific.

Know What You Want

Kathleen L.’s haircut horror story is very much a family affair. “When I was seven, I got a very short haircut,” says Kathleen, 17. “I have an older brother, and we are often mistaken for twins. But with that particular haircut, I wasn’t mistaken for his twin—I was mistaken for him. Twice.”

After that, Kathleen swore never to cut her hair super short again, but that doesn’t stop her from taking other risks with her longer locks.

“I love playing with my hair and experimenting with lengths and color (did you know purple turns a nasty grey after a while?),” she says. But she never goes for a crazy look without getting all the deets beforehand, either.

Her tip? Before doing something drastic, scour the Internet for pictures of the exact cut you want and bring ‘em along to the salon so that everyone is on the same page.

Skip the Trends

Emily G., 16, was in eighth grade when the bang trend hit her school. Once the popular girl in her class got hers cut, she couldn’t help but follow suit.

She took her “great big mess of curly hair” to a local salon and walked out with gorge, blown-out bangs. “I felt like a movie star,” she says. “Or at least like the other pretty girls in school.  I couldn't wait for school the next day to show of my new look.”

That night after her shower, Emily combed gel into her hair and laid it out flat on her pillow. But when she woke up the next morning and got a look at herself in the mirror, she found that her hair wasn’t straight or sleek.

“It was a mess,” she recalls. “My bangs were coiled up into little curls that sat on the top of my forehead.  I looked ridiculous.”

Lesson learned? “Not every trend works for everybody,” Emily says. “I also learned the importance of working with a hairdresser who knows your type of hair and what works for it.”

Don’t do it yourself!

Liz S., 15, was bored with her look.

“I’d had the same haircut for ages,” she says. “I was starting high school and I wanted something new.”

So she grabbed a pair of scissors and began to snip. “My best friend has just cut herself some sweet swoopy side bangs, so how hard could it be, right?”

After the first round of snipping, her new blunt bangs were a wee bit lopsided. She snatched up the scissors again to even things up.

“By the time I was finished, my bangs were way short,” she says. “I looked stupid and there was nothing I could do about it. I had to wait a couple of weeks for them to grow out.”

Liz’s lesson? Leave it to the pros!

Dear Mod, I got my hair dyed and highlighted a few months ago. Well my hair is starting to grow out and so the color is from my hair ends to about two inches from my roots!! My parents won't let me get it re dyed or anything so do you know any products that can atleast weaken the color sobmy natural hair color will be all that's left?

Hey girlie! Here's a little trick you can use for those troublesome roots. Just get an eyeshadow that's close to the color which you dyed your hair and apply that to your roots. There is also Clairol's Nice and Easy Root Touch Up collection sold at your local drug store for only $5. And then there is the good old fashion hat trick where you can where a scarf or hat over your roots until your hair has fully grown out. Good luck!

MODMOD...One of my good friends has been going through some major drama. On top of that, her confidence level is already low because she (and i feel terrible saying this, but i cant find another way to put it) does not exactly have a good sense of style, whether it be clothes, makeup, etc. I want to help make her feel beautiful, but how can i give her this makeover without making her feel like im saying she NEEDS a makeover? The last thing i want to do is make her feel worse. I want her to have more confidence in herself! Her best feature is her eyes and she is a bit of a ruler body shape, if that helps. Smile thanks so much.

Hey girl, well for starter you could buy her cute clothes for the nearest holiday. That way you can say here are some cute clothes without actually saying your sense of style is horrible. If you get more comfortable you can tell her some tips, just show her some things. I dont hink she'll get offended.

Mod!!! My hair is always crazy- even right after i brush it! How do I make it smooth and sleek- not all over the place!

Gosh, that's a toughie - it kinda depends what kind of "crazy" hair you're dealing with!  Using a deep conditioner once a week can help keep hair hydrated, which will make it more smooth.  Also, making sure to brush gently (I like to use a special detangling comb) can reduce breakage, which means less frizz.  I would also check this article out:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/07/16/hair-products-accessories.aspx (the tips are for summer, but they help smooth hair all year long ).  xoxo

Hey! if you don't like the scarf trend look, just try wearing it a different way like airplane-pilot style or folded in half with both ends looped through the fold. good luck!

Some people are better at cutting their hair like my friend. She gave herself and her friend amazing haircuts!!!!! Of course I'm still a little afraid to have her cut it, maybe due to the fact that my mom has always said to leave it to the proffessionals! haha When I was five I cut my own hair because I was bored; it was utterly and horribly horrific according to my mom and she got me into the salon for a pronto asap emergency appointment. I brought it up to my mom, and she said I dont need makeup. Its not like Id cake on tons, just a tsteful amount. How can I convince her?
Thanks! Laughing

Maybe ask for one item like eyeliner. If you lower the amount of things your asking for then she'll be more willing to say yes. Good luck! xoxo kerra

my besties b-day is coming up soon and i hav no idea what to get her. shes a sporty gal and has a casual fashion sense. (her everyday outift= demin bermudas, all star purple sneakers, and a deep v neck aero tee.) wat do u think is a cute present i can get her? thanks! Smile

Hey girl,

I would get her something that you know she really likes! The presents I get for people are always things that remind me of him or her. For example, I knew my boyfriend's plastic water bottle had gotten run over by a car so even though it sounds like a weird present, I got him the same water bottle along with a shirt for his birthday and he uses the water bottle all the time!

One of my best friends got our other BFF some Harry Potter and Glee things because she knows she really likes the books/TV show. I would just try to get something that your friend loves rather than being too generic. Since you know she likes Aero, maybe you could check out Aero for some cute accessories or jewelry. However if she's too sporty and you wouldn't really see her wearing jewelry, maybe you could get her a fun board or outside game. Or, look for something related to an inside joke that you have - just something that reminds you of her. Good luck!

I have hair down to like my sholder and its black and with caramel highlights and has blonde highlights is there any way that i can make my hair look my age im 13 and most girls in my grande have curly hair that are ussually up in a pony tail ,but i can get my hair up in a pony tail and if i curl it it will be really short is there anyway i can make my hair look normal?
Also do you have any cheap makeup tips my skin is fair and my eyes are green.

Maybe you could try a low ponytail if you want to pull your hair back but can't put it up too high. Or, you could curl your hair but leave it down. Don't feel like you have to have the same hairstyle as all the other girls in your grade, though ... feel free to have your own personal style! I don't like spending too much on makeup so I usually buy it at Walmart. You could also check a drugstore like CVS or Rite-Aid for some less-expensive finds. As for colors, maybe try a brownish-black mascara with a tan or violet eyeshadow to help highlight your eyes. There are some eyeshadows made to highlight green eyes so that would be a good start, at least for color ideas. You may want to get a pack of more than one color to try out a few.

Hey girl,

I'm not totally sure which one of you he likes, but it sounds like it might be you! I would just keep continue what you're doing ... talking to him, being flirty, etc. ... without making much more of a move. Let him come to you. If he does end up with the other girl then he'll be off limits, but until then, just be friendly and flirty and not overly forward. Good luck!

I have side swept bangs and I want to get them trimmed but my mums says that we need to save money because we cant afford it. I actually cut the side bangs myself but I'm scared I might mess up this time.

It can be kind of risky to cut your own bangs. Even though your mom's not a hairdresser, maybe she could cut your bangs - it may be easier for someone else to do it. Or, you could call a few places and see if anywhere offers a bangs trim for not much money. A lot of times it's cheaper to get your bangs done than a whole haircut.
