How Do I Use a Tampon?

 
 

Where do I insert a tampon? I have not had my period yet but I do not want to ask my mom. Please help!

Dear Tampon Troubles,
 
Inserting a tampon for the first time doesn’t have to be a mystery—especially when you have help. Everyone finds it a bit confusing the first time, and then it’s like brushing your teeth or anything else. I asked my mom for guidance and she was totally happy to help.
 
When the time comes, it may not be so bad to ask your mom for some tips—after all, she’s been doing this for years. But there are directions in the box of tampons, and possibly even a diagram. The directions will probably say to insert the tampon at a certain angle, but keep in mind that our bodies are all different, so you should try different angles until you get it lined up correctly to go in without pain.
 
All you’ve gotta do is insert the applicator, holding on to the top half, and push the bottom half in (that pushes the actual tampon into your vagina) and then pull out the cardboard or plastic applicator . Make sure the string is hanging out of your vagina so that you can pull it out again. You can also use a tampon without an applicator, but that may be trickier for the first time.
 

If you do feel pain, don’t force it. Maybe you want to start with pads and work up to tampons. And asking for help is not as terrible as it may seem!

It might have slowed down but not been completely over yet. I would call your parents and ask what you should do -- maybe you could borrow one from a neighbor or friend close by.

I really want to use tampons, because i swim, dance, skate, and do gymanastics. But i've alreay tried a couple of times and it still wont go in. When i try to insert it, it hits something, and it makes my 'down there' hurt a lot. What am i doing wrong? Is there a proper position your supposed to be in? Thanks

Yesterday i went biking with my friend, and we went over this big bump, and uhm my 'down there' started to hurt. And when i came home there was blood in my underwear. Its not my period though. Help what happened?

 

Hey! I can tell you want I think it is, but I also think you should talk to your doctor about it to be sure. I think your hymen may have broken. Don't worry, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. This happens once to most girls, and after it happens you don't need to do anything, you're fine. Wikipedia defines the hymen as a membrane that surrounds or partially covers the external vaginal opening. It forms part of the vulva, or external genitalia. It can tear during horseback riding, biking, like in your case, or a first experience with intercourse. There is a small amount of blood when it tears, but after that there's not much to worry about. I'd like to re-emphasize that I am not a doctor and am only giving my unprofessional opinion from the information you gave me. I hope this helps!

Hey Teddy.bear123, mhmm you might just have to get over this one girly. You're going to have to see blood while you're on your period. But one thing that may help you is not to see the blood as gross and icky. Instead look at it as helpful to your body. Without bleeding your bod wouldn't be able to create a new lining for your stomach, since the old lining sheds with the flow of blood. Hope this helps! Xoxo

i've had my period for multiple years now (i don't remember exactly. i'm 15) and i've never used tampons. my mom doesn't like them because you have to put them in, you know, there. so i always use pads...but i've had spills plenty of times. i want to try tampons, but i seriously don't think my mom will let me, especially since i'd have to get a whole pack of them. what should i do?

Hey chica! Talk to your mom about it with the facts: tampons are goo for sports, more comfortable (once you get used to them) and are safe if used the right way.  If you give her the low down on what you want, she might come around.  If not, you'll have to follow her rules until you don't live in your house anymore. Ok i am thirteen and i started getting pubic hair about a little over a year ago. Like June of 2011. And i have had discharge for like a year now. But sometimes it like absorbed into my panties and there are a few tiny clumps Like super tiny is this normal? And also i have bigger boob then my sixteen and eighteen year old sisters. Is that normal? They wear 32a and i were 34a. And i get cramps do you think i will get my period soon?




Hey chica, that sounds like you might get your period soon. But it's hard to tell exactly when your period is gonna come. And don't worry about your discharge unless you're having other symptoms that might mean something is wrong. For now, sounds like you're totally normal.

I'm scared that I won't be able to put one in, because I have to learn on the trip! Also, there's so much hair down there that I, uh, can't really find the place to put in in. help!!!

Inserting a tampon can be a tricky thing, so it's totally okay that you didn't master it on the first try. I suggest trying again (using the tips in the article), but if you are too scared to do it, then don't do it! Not everyone is comfortable with tampons. Sure, it might put a damper on vacay plans, but it's more important that you're comfortable. Depending on how heavy or light your period is, you could still go swimming while wearing a pad. Or, just go wading while your body does its thing. Good luck!

Tampons will not leak when you come out of the pool. Just make sure to change the tampon often so there's no risk of a leak. Tampons can be intimidating to use. There are directions in every box of tampons, so check those out. Also, you could ask your mom or a trusted friend for some tips.

MOD MOD MOD!!!! So I'm on a swim team and I really hate missing practice but I scared of using tampons. This is only the secound time i've had my period and I'm 13; should i wait until I'm older to use a tampon? Will it be really painful? Will i feel it inside me (yuck) while i'm swimming? One last thing; um why do people say you can only use a tampon after you've have sex?

 

Hey! That is not at all true. As long as you insert it correctly you shouldn't be able to feel any discomfort even when you swim!

7 days actually is totally normal! Most girls have a period that lasts about 5-8 days. But 3 day periods and 9 day periods are also common. Your period will change as you get older and can be affected by all sorts of things (like changes in stress or diet, for example) but there's nothing we can do to actually change it ourselves <3

MOD MOD MOD! Okay so I have had my period for a few months now, and I really want to try a tampon because pads are annoying because I hate the feeling of having the actual blood coming out of me.. Soo I have a few questions. Do you think I should start wearing tampons or keep using pads? What is the longest I can wear a tampon because I want to go to school without changing it and I have school for about 7 1/2 hours until I actually get home. Also, will it hurt? Hey girlie,

Switching from pads to tampons is a personal choice, so no one can make that decision but you! Personally, I use tampons and can't believe I EVER used pads - they're so much better! Cleaner, more comfy, easier to deal with. It's recommended that you only wear tampons for about 4-6 hours. Sometimes you have to change them more often than that if your flow is heavy. So you'll probably have to hit the bathroom at school at least once during the day when you have your period! (But you probably would have to with pads anyway.) If you feel uncomfy with it, try stopping by the nurse's office and asking if you can use the restroom there. It'll give you a sec to breathe and relax without worrying about people in the other stalls! If you insert a tampon properly, you will not feel it inside you. You'll know it's there, but it won't hurt and it won't feel uncomfy. Honestly, sometimes I forget I have my period! It might feel a little uncomfy when you insert/remove the tampons for the first few times because your muscles "down there" have to get used to them. But as you keep using them, your bod will adjust and it will be super easy! Smile I really recommend them!

You just have to suck it up and ask your mom. she had to go through the exact same thing when she was our age and she probably remembers it. i just walked up to my mom and was like "I just i just got my period". she was cool about it.

Okay so Ive had my period for about 7 months now and Ive been trying and trying everyday to get a tampon in! I no longer feel pain I used to, but it doesnt go up any furter than about two inches... girlygirl<3- you CANNOT wear tampons while you sleep! You can get Toxic Shock Syndrome from that, which is very very serious. You are supposed to switch over to a pad at night.

Thank you for asking all your questions! I have used pads since I started my period years ago, but I'm finally fed up! I want to go swimming this summer and not have to worry about it. The questions you ask, even the embarassing ones, are completely normal! I am glad you ask them so I don't have to! I have tried to insert tampons a few times, but it always hurts. I really just can't relax. I'm going to keep trying I guess.

Yes, I was making sure I put the applicator in until my fingers were touching (while holding onto the 'grip' area thing). Then when it's there, I push it.
Also, I tried again, and I'm not sure if it just felt like it, but when I pushed the applicator part (the part you actually push), it felt more like the bigger part was coming a little farther out, rather than the smaller tube actually going in. I'm not sure if that was actually happen, but it felt like it. And I was making sure to hold it in there firmly, but that's kinda what it felt like.

I've been trying more tampons today.
I tried 5 or 6 and I couldn't get any of them. They were feeling uncomfortable, so I had to take them out.
I got one in, but it kinda feels like it's sliding out.
I got one in last night that felt like it was sliding out, and it really did slide out.
I swear, I just can not get them in far enough. I've tried so many times, and everytime, it's not in far enough.
I've tried sitting on the toilet, I've tried one foot up on the toilet and tub, and I've even tried laying down. I just can't get it. I make sure I'm all relaxed and everything too, but it's never in far enough. I can't go in any farther or it hurts.
What am I doing wrong?
And yes, I am doing it with an angle, not going straight in.




Are you making sure the applicator goes in until your fingers touch your body?

How much of angle do you have to do? (I know everybody's different though). Also, how big of an area do you have for the tampon to actually go in? Is it big enough that you could still put the tampon in at different angles, or is small enough that once you get the right angle, you'll know it?

 

It's about a 45 degree angle, and the area where the tampon goes is large enough that a tampon can be inserted in a variation of angles. It's just about it at the right angle so it feels comfortable to you.

Well, my first attempt at a tampon didn't work.
It started sliding out, so I had to take it out.
Which bring me to another question:
What do you do with it when you're done with it?
Obviously you throw it away, but you're not just going to throw in a used tampon.
I figured you'd just put it in the wrapper of your new one, but I used a Kotex U (Click), so the package was way too small to fit the tampon back into.
So I tried wrapping it up in toilet paper, but it soaked right through.
Luckily, I had a pad wrapper that I wrapped around it.
But what are you supposed to do with them?
Also, I only had it in for about an hour, but it was already pretty bloody when I took it out. It definitely wasn't soaked, but I'd say atleast half of it was soaked. Does that mean I need a more absorbent one, or is that normal? (I was just using regulars)
(Again, really sorry for all the questions. I just really want to use tampons, and want to make sure I get it right next time)




Hey girl, you may need to use a heavier tampon at the beginning of your period or change it more often. As for disposal, wrap it in the wrapper and maybe reinforce it with toilet paper, then toss it in the trash can.

I just tried inserting my first tampon.
I got it in and everything, but it feels a little uncomfortable.
It doesn't hurt, but I just feel like something's stuck up there (well, not stuck stuck; and yeah, obviously there IS something up there).
I know everyone says if it's uncomfortable, it's not in right, so I was wondering, do you think mines in wrong, or is just because it's my first one?




Hey girl, I'd think it's just because you're not used to the feeling. Know the first few times it's more or less a trial and error game. You'll get it right and used to it -- as long as it isn't painful, it sounds like you've done it right.

MOD (Sorry for all the questions. I just want to make sure I'm fully prepared and ready for when I try them for the first time). I read something, and wanted to see if it's true: "Do NOT store tampons in the bathroom where you bathe. It will absorb the heat and moisture and make you more susceptible for Toxic Shock Syndrome." Is that true? I've always kept pads (so I was planning on keeping tampons in the same place) under the bathroom counter, in our bathroom (which is where my brother & I shower). But is that true? If your tampons are in their wrappers, in a box, in the cabinet, could they really absorb the heat and moisture? If it is true, where else could I keep them? It seems a litle inconvenient to have to keep them in my room, or like the hall closet...

 

Hey girl. It's not a problem to keep your tampons, along with your pads, in your bathroom counter. It's actually a good idea to keep them together so that when you quickly need to grab one, you'll know exactly where they are.

MOD 2 questions about tampons: 1. To insert, do you actually need to put the tampon applicator 'up there' and then push the applicator, or do you just put it outside, and then push on the applicator? 2. How do you know when your tampon is full and ready to be taken out? I know you need to take it out before 8 hours because of TSS, but I heard you don't want to take it out too early because it'll hurt. So how do you know when it's full?

How can I bring it up to my mom?
Also, what are some good tampons to start with? I've heard Kotex Click (I think that's what they're called), Playtex Sport, or Tampax Pearls are all good. What do you think is the best kind to start with?




I think tampex pearl is gonna be the best one to start with. As for bringing it up to your mom just pull her aside and let her know you wanna talk about your period. Tell her the reasons why you wanna use tampons and im sure she'll agree. Good luck! xoxo kerra

Hey girlie! If you feel your body is "period ready," you can never be too safe. A pad will protect you if your period comes and only you know whether you feel "off"/as if it could come any day now Smile

Hey girly! Your vagina is kind of like elastic, in a sense. It will stretch to fit a tampon. You might feel the tampon your first few times, but eventually, once you get the hang of it, you won't notice it in. And sometimes, applicators make it easier to put them in. I'd start with applicators Smile

I have my period and tomorrow I will need to use a tampon but I haven't used one in a while. Like I've used one before but not recently will it be as hard to use as the first time???




Hey girlie! I remember my first few times using tampons-I thought it was next to impossible and that I would be stuck wearing pads for the rest of my life! Well, you can put your mind to ease because, just like anything, it gets easier the more you do it! It will not be as hard as the first time because now you know how it should feel. If you are a bit worried about the second go-around, then make sure to use a tampon with an applicator-this way, most of the work it cut out for you! Also, make sure you bend your knees and separate your legs about shoulder width apart before applying your tampon! Hope this helps! You can do it, sister!

I'm 11 years old and my best friend started before me and she didnt care what would happen to her she wouldnt let it bother her and listen people have periods at diffrent times so dont freak...

Hey chickadee! I wouldn't worry too much if your period is extra heavy this month. If it keeps being a trend though, then maybe just check with a doc to be sure. Usually though, flow is different for everyone. Some of us are unlucky and get it in full force

My period is really heavy... too heavy to wear regular tampons because it still leaks through.. so i tried using super tampons but those wouldnt fit, they were to big.. so what should i do if i cant wear regular tampons without it leaking and super tampons are to big and keep falling oout?




Hey girl,

My advice would be to keep trying the super tampons. If you practice, you'll get them in at the right angle eventually and they won't fall out, promise! Your bod just has to adjust to them. If you don't want to do that, you can either wear regular tampons with pantyliners/light pads and change them more frequently, or just switch to pads for today. Definitely plenty of options... just choose which one works best for you! Smile

Hey chica! It sounds like you may have cramps, which is def a sign that your period is coming. If it doesn't go away after a few days, then I'd make an appointment with your doc. If they are cramps though, then it should only last a day or two.

I know it's really tough to believe this, but you will catch up to everyone else. It's only a difference of a year or two - which feels like a lot now but, in the long run, it's nothing! The important thing is that you're developing at a healthy rate, and your doctor's visit should make you feel confident in that. Try to embrace the bod that you've got and treat it well by exercising, finding clothes that suit your body type, and walking with confidence. Whether you get your period tomorrow or 6 months from now, there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy yourself the way ya are!!

Hey girl!  You might want to try a smaller size, like a "lite" or "junior" one.  Some tampons come with "smooth" or "pearl" applicators, and those can be easier to use.  But what will really make the difference is inserting it correctly - it really shouldn't hurt if you're doing it right.  You might want to read this article for more tips:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx
