Is My Tampon Supposed to Bleed Through?

Check these out, too...

  • 3 ways to not be embarrassed about buying tampons
Whenever I use a tampon, it always bleeds through and I feel weird about it. Is this normal? I always us the right size but it still happens.

It's totally normal for a tampon to bleed through when it gets saturated with blood and needs to be changed. Generally, tampons should be changed every four-to-eight hours. If ya find that you need to change your tampon more frequently than that, it may be that you need a higher absorbency tampon. Tampon sizes refer to different absorbencies--light, regular and super. Are you using super? And it’s a good idea to use an underwear liner in addition to a tampon if you’re havin’ this problem—it can prevent any seepage through your clothes.

If you’ve already tried this, suggests Elizabeth Bobby, a nurse practitioner in OBGYN at About Women By Women, in Wellesley, Mass., “make sure that you’re pushing the tampon far enough into your vagina; when it’s correctly inserted, you won't see any cotton at your vaginal opening, you'll only see string. If you see only string, and the string is saturated with blood, you need to change your tampon.”

However, if you find that you need to change a super-absorbency tampon more than every four hours, Bobby recommends seeing your doctor. “There are common disorders that cause some people to bleed more easily than others, and sometimes—especially if you've never had surgery (in which case your surgeon would notice that your bleeding is hard to stop)—these can be diagnosed for the first time when a girl gets her period.”

Hey. So, I usually have a pretty light period, but lately I've been having sex on my period... Does that make it a more heavy flow? -_-

Hi! Try Tampax Pearls. They are them most comfortable tampons I've ever had. I play field hockey and I didn't want to wear a pad out there! You'll get used to them - believe me.

How much blood is too much to loose? I started my perion yesterday and usually my heavy flow day would be 2 days from now but in the past 3 hours I have bled through 2 regular tampons and my mom refuses to buy heavy flow but how much is too much blood to loose???

You cant control how heavy your flow is. Just get tampons that can handle it. xoxo kerra

MOD~MOD~MOD~ My friend was talking to me about how much more comfortable tampons are compared to pads, but she also said they hurt to insert. She gave me one to try next time I have it. I really want to try but I'm kind of scared. Do you think I should try?! My other friend (who has a similar body shape to mine) can't even fit the smallest ones because she's so athletic. What do you think??

Hey girlie, being athletic has nothing to do with a tampon fitting. It's more about how heavy your period is. It's definitely worth a try and you don't like it you don't have to try it again.

Hey girl, It's hard to say for sure what's up, but don't freak!  Check out this article: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/02/23/period-flow-pads.aspx.  It says it's an issue if you have to change it every hour or sooner.  But I would def talk to an adult you trust.  They can help you decide if it's time to make an appointment with your doctor.  xoxo

MOD MOD MOD Hello! I have an issue. I have not started my period yet. I am 14, 5'4 and about 100lbs. My mom is starting to freak out and is making me eat a ton of food because she thinks that something is wrong. I eat regularly and healthy! So? What should I do? Please help me!

Hey girly girl! I wouldn't worry too much yet. Lots of girls are late bloomers. And, if you're super thin, than that's probably the reason. Your body needs to have a certain amount of fat before your period comes. If you're eating right, and enough, than I wouldn't worry.

I've had my period for about 2 years and very irregular. It tends to be around 50 days though because I'm very athletic. The weird thing about my time of the month is that I just don't get it in the summer from usually July to late September or October. My sister says it could be because I run a lot and play a lot of competitive basketball in the summer, or that my period is just that irregular. Should I be worried?

I dont think you should be worried. I would never get my period during field hockey season so when youre working out a lot and very active your period is going to come less often. Periods are often very irregular. So dont be stressed about anything Smile xoxo kerra

MOD MOD MOD!
This happens to me! In fact, I was wearing new jeans, and in the bathroom noticed some blood on my underwear. So I put in a tampon, and wadded up some toleit paper-just in case. But over the course of 1 class they both failed to work. My jeans are totally ruined now.
At home I hung them up to dry, and then washed them in cold water and hand soap. This has worked every time before. But on this pair of jeans, it looks like I peed my pants. Not dark red, just a faded yellowish color.
I don't know how to explain the stained jeans to my mom, because we are tight on money and can't afford to throw away the pair, but I'm not going to wear them again.
HELP!

I suggest you talk to her about it and see if theres any other way to get rid of the stain. Dont give up on it. Good luck! xoxo kerra

So uhhh...I'm 15, and I've had my period for a long time, and I realized that my friends, and alot of other girls my age use tampons. And I don't...idk. I feel kind of obligated to wear tampons. Should I feel this way? And should I go ahead and try wearing tampons? Because I'm totally not sure. Frown

Hey! it's a totally personal choice. Some girls choose tampons because they're less bulky than pads, but there is not pressure to use one or the other. it's up to you Smile

i'm 14 and have had my period for over a year. It used to be pretty regular, but the last few months it's been reallly short (like 3 days) and really light (like barely enough for lite tampons) what's up with that?

Hey girl,

Even though you've had your period for a year now, it STILL can tend to be irregular at times. It also changes from month to month due to changes in diet, sleep, stress, etc. Most likely, your body is just behaving normally and it's nothing to worry about. But if you're curious, try giving your doc a call and just describe the situation to them. They'll be able to tell you more about your period and make you feel more comfy with the change Smile

I am fourteen and my period is VERY irregular. Last Spring Break, I tried to put in tampon. It hurt SO bad and I was afraid of hurting myself, so I ended up not doing it. My mom and my aunt were surprised to hear it hurt, but maybe they just didn't remember when they first put a tampon in. I am thinking about trying it again, but I am really scared of it. All the girls wear tampons. I just don't want it to hurt, or/and for me to hurt myself. Is there any way that I might reduce the pain of putting one in for the first time? Or is it not supposed to hurt? I want to be able to swim and for it not to stink when I am on my period. Thank you so much. Smile

Hey girly! Periods can be irregular for your first few years, so I would say that it's totally normal. Also, factors like what you eat, how much you exercise, and stress, can have an impact on your cycle. I wouldn't worry about it Smile

I bleed through the highest absorbency tampon and pad after a half hour to an hour. My period also lasts 2 weeks .I have to put on three pads and it still goes through. It was so bad the other day that i bled on a chair. We've tried to call the Gyno but they aren't answering their phone. What should i do now?

Hey girl! Honestly i think your best bet is probably getting in touch with a Gyno to help!  Otherwise, I would just be changing my tampon more often!  However, there are some common disorders where girls bleed much more than regular.  Here's a link to check out! Hope you get intouch with your doctor soon! Sorry if I couldn't be of much help! http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/10/12/My-Tampon-Bleeds-Through.aspx

ok, so when I get my period I use tampons most of the time cuz thy r more practical for me. I use regular cuz super is to big like for me to use but the problem is that I bleed thro a regular in 1.5-2 hrs. I wont use a super cuz it hurts so much if I can even get it in and most of the time pads rnt practical.

Hey girlie, try a different brand of super. If your period is that heavy then a super tampon should slide in easily.

Hey girlie, I'm definitely not an expert, but usually people who are colorblind tend to see colors differently than other people. He sees something else in place of purple or blue. Some people might see orange when they look at something pink. Ask him more about it how works for him.

This is common and happened a lot when I first started using tampons. Make sure you are using the right ones and it just sounds like you need to use the super absorbent kind. Also be sure its fully inserted inside of you because if it doesnt go in all the way you can still get the bleed through.

MOD MOD MOD MOD I used a tampon for the 1st time(and I think I got it in right because it didnt hurt going in) and I only had it in for about 1 hour before it started to leak. Do I need to push it in farther or should I try a better absorbency? Also, when I took it out it kinda hurt a little. Is that because it was my first time using one? thanks in advance.

Hey chica! Congrats on your first tampon!! It's possible that it's a combo of both... you needing to push it in further, and maybe needing a higher absorbancy. If it hurt, it's probably just because it was your first time. Eventually, your body will be used to it, and it won't hurt at all Smile
