Your costume is hangin’ in your closet, the bags of candy
are ready to go, but your house? Well, that’s another story. Don’t fret, girl,
‘cause we’ve got four wicked ways to make your home look haunted this Halloween.
Deadly Doorstep
Create faux spider webs using spider webbing or cotton
batting from a craft or party store. (Go all out with cobweb shooters and
cartridges.) Place a few plastic spiders in the web and tack more to the
railing and door using sticky tack. Construct larger than life arachnids from
balloons. Use normal-sized balloons for the head and body and skinny (look for
“260”) balloons for the legs. Connect the pieces using fishing line, and then
attach to railings and suspend from the ceiling. Creepy!
Burial Ground
Buy rectangles of Styrofoam from a craft store and cut them
down into grave-like shapes. Spray paint grey. Write RIP and cryptic epitaphs
on all of your stones before shoving them into the ground. Mound up fallen
leaves to give it the appearance that the grave has been recently dug and
illuminate with an electric lantern or a carved pumpkin. Be careful when
putting leaves close to open flame. You don’t wanna set the yard on fire, right?
What’s in the window?
If your home has two or more stories, turn off the lights
upstairs and crack the windows. Behind each window, place a strobe light to
create an eerie effect. Snag a CD with creepy music from a party store or
download tracks from the Internet. Thing ghostly moans and the occasional
scream. Play on repeat to totally freak out your trick-or-treaters.
Word of Warning
If the path to your front door is illuminated by outdoor
lights, paint words of warning onto stakes and drive them into the ground. If
not, try carving words into a series of pumpkins. “I’d turn back if I were you”
and “Abandon hope all ye who enter here” are classic cautions. “Beware,
trespasser,” wouldn’t hurt, either. A splash of fake blood on the walkway
should make the message clear.
