Balance Your Sched and Be the Best You

Check these out, too...

  • 10 tips for acing your AP tests
  • 5 last-minute ways to lift your grades
  • 3 signs you need to give your study group the boot
  • How not to pull an all-nighter (and stay sane if you have to)
  • How to get closer with a girl you kinda sorta know
Lotsa teens get anxious about being "well rounded" enough for college -- but overdoing it on the extracurriculars might not be the best way to go either.

Don't get us wrong, it's great to be involved in clubs and sports teams, but playing on the soccer team, heading up the yearbook, leading the orchestra and managing swim team bake sales can cause your grades to suffer. It's all about balance, girlie!

Don't bite off more than you can chew

Going to meetings everyday is manageable at the beginning of the year -- but come midterm time, you'll be wishin' you had more time to hit the books. Drop the things you're not too involved in or don't love. It goes without saying that you should keep any commitments like leading a club, but if it's not your passion and it's eating up your time, you might want to think about dropping it next year.

Pick activities you love

It's tempting to sign up for every club that sounds even remotely interesting. You want to meet new people and try new things, and joining groups is a great way to do that. But it's more effective to join just two or three rather than 10 -- you'll get to know people better, and you can get involved in a cause or activity that you really love instead of getting only partially involved in a lot of things.

Get involved

Don't go too far in the opposite direction! Definitely try to get involved in something. It'll help you meet new people and learn new things, but the point is that you should pick a few activities you love, and ditch the random clubs you joined to pad your resume. Your grades will thank you!

MOD MOD MOD ok well im in high school and i never have time to workout or to spend time with my friends or family during the week because i am taking the 3 honors classes that i can and one of them is even an advanced sophomore class (im a freshman) and i am usually doing my homework until about 7 or 8 at night and i have lights out at 9. i get distracted easily when doing my homework unless it is easy or interests me. i really need to workout because my new years resolution is to lose weight and i need a schedule to follow so that i am not so stressed out. i am really stresed because money is tight and i am trying to do the best i can in school to get scholarships. do you have any advice to help me plan out my weeks? thanks in advance and im so sorry that this is so long...

Hey chickadee! I totally know where you're coming from. If you have study hall during school, or time in between or before classes, I would try to get some work done then. And then start as soon as you get home from school, so that you can get it done quicker. Give yourself a break on the weekends, if you can. Maybe schedule an hour of YOU time each night, whether it be right before you go to bed, or even right after school (if you would prefer), to do something that makes you happy, whether that be working out, talking on the phone or hanging with a friend, or doing something girly like taking a warm bubble bath. You deserve to take a break every now and then! And if you don't, you won't be too happy. And as for working out, you can make up for it throughout the day by implementing little changes in your life. Take the stairs as much as possible. Go back to your locker as much as you can, rather than trying to carry 5 books at a time. That's more exercise right there! Smile

MOD MOD MOD I have finals starting tomorrow and im insanely scared! im in high school and this all goes to college! what can i do to "test my best"?

Hey chica! I wouldl definately recommend hitting the books tonight for a little bit, and then getting to bed early, so that you get a good nights sleep. Tomorrow morning, rise early and study a little more then. And, eat a good breakfast to keep you alert and going. Good luck! Smile

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!!!
Hey I have all A's in every class but I got a B+ in woodshop And I know someday I'm going to fail it. anyway In science I have all a's and on this packet I got 10 wrong out of 45 and I'm afraid that it will drop my grade down and I'll get punished. I've tried so hard to get all A's but its getting harder. What should I do? I'm only in Middle school! I hope you understand it might not be a big deal.

I totally understand and I'm the same way. Once you've worked so hard for your grades, it can be tough to keep that up as the classes get harder and there's more work. Keep trying your best and I would talk to your parents about how you always put forth your best effort, even if you aren't getting all As. Also, don't be disappointed by a B+! That is still something to be proud of and don't assume that you'll fail in the future. If you are concerned about a specific grade, like in science, you could talk to your teacher and ask if the two of you could go over why the answers were wrong and if there's anything you can do. I think in school, the effort you put in is the most important part! Good luck!
