Depressed with no one to talk to

Check these out, too...

  • 7 things to say (and do) to keep your parents from worrying about you
  • 3 times it's OK to tell your bestie's secret
  • In the News: Exercise really does calm you down
  • What to do when your parents are worried about something big
  • My dad is sexually abusing me. How can I tell my mom?
I'm depressed. I know I am. I looked up the symptoms and I have just about all of them. I'm not going to kill myself, because that would be unfair to my family, but I really don't want to deal with life anymore.

When I try to talk about my feelings with my mom, she says that it's because she is a bad parent and she's sorry, but that I should try to be happier. I need help and I can't talk to anyone.

Hey, hon. I’m sorry that you’re dealing with such a tough time. But it’s great that you are in touch with your feelings and trying to do something to improve the situation.

Talking to someone about what’s getting’ ya down is def the way to go. If your mom can’t hear it, then try chatting with your school counselor, your doctor or another trusted adult. You do need to seek help, and talking with an adult who can hear what you’re going through and guide you in the right direction is essential.

You deserve to be happy and enjoy school, make friends and just be the great girl you are. After you’ve had the chance to talk with someone about how you’re feeling, you might want to try writing a letter to your mom. It sounds like it’s really tough for her to hear what you’re going through, but maybe if you were to write down your feelings and explain that trying to cheer up is not working, her emotions wouldn't cloud her ability to see the situation for what it is.

Good luck girl—I know you'll find some help. Also try these resources: http://www.teendepression.org/, http://www.teen-depression.info/, http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/mental_health/depression.html. And you can try this teen help line either online or by phone: http://teenlineonline.org/teens/.

Lately I feel like I've been getting anxiety attacks at school. My stomach feels all knotted up and anxious and I feel like I just want to be home. I feel really uncomfortable at school sometimes, which is probably because I am pretty shy and keep to myslef a lot. How can I get over this and maybe even become less shy? I feel like its keeping me from making friends. ThanksSmile

Hey girl,

I think the best way to get over anxiety and comfort issues is to push yourself beyond your "comfort zone" every day. Do you always sit in the back of the room because it feels safer? Or do you always sit by yourself at lunch because it's easier than talking to new people? Tomorrow, challenge yourself to NOT do that. Mix things up and force yourself to be more out-going. Believe it or not, proving to yourself that you can do something erases all insecurities you might have about it in the future! You can also do this by joining a new club or taking up a new hobby. All of these things make us feel more independent, which makes us feel more confident Smile You can do it!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD! Alright.... Well I'm the type of person who won't tell anyone anything. Not my mom, my friends, never a counselor, no one. But my mom hates it and says I'm gonna break down and the stress is hurting me. Well now I'm starting to notice, seriously if one more thing happens I'm gonna break down.... I'm so depressed... I don't show it I seem so happy on the outside but I'm so depressed... I don't want to talk to a counselor so that's not really an option.... I miss my friends from my last school so much I can't stand it! They live too far away and we cant afford to drive there and I haven't talked to them in such a long time I'm going to cry.... Please help... :'C

Hey girly! I agree with your mom that you need to talk about how you feel. It's not healthy at all to keep it in! Even if you talk to your friends about it. You'll be amazed at how much better, and free you feel after talking about it. It'll feel like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders.

As for your pals, can you set aside a time to talk each night? Or even once a week? Talking on the phone is better than nothing...

While on facebook last week, I saw that one of my friends had "liked" a page that said "I pretend to smile and that everything is all right but I'm dying on the inside." I'm worried about her, but I'm afraid that if I confront her about it she'll think I'm intrusive or annoying. Should I ask her about it?

Hey babe,

It's so good you're paying attention to these things, but she could've just been feeling down that day or liked the phrase/quote/lyric on the page. It wouldn't hurt to send her a FB message or a text though! Don't be too serious about it, but just tell her you wanted to say hi. Then tell her you saw what she "liked" and, if she ever feels sad or upset, you're there for her. As long as you don't force her into giving details and get TOO intense about it, she'll appreciate the thought! <3

I'm pretty sure I have an anxiety disorder. I get scared over EVERYTHING and there's no way to control it. Even the little things. I kind of tried telling my mom but she didn't take me serious. What should I do next? I'm always scared and stressed out and it's starting to affect my life.

Hey girlie. Don't worry! I think at this time during the year it is easy to get overwhelmed with the holidays and exams and boys. When I feel like I am getting stressed, I take a deep breath and try to go somewhere alone-even if it is for a few minutes. It helps to be able to collect yourself and tell yourself, "It's only life--it's not worth stressing over." If you feel that you truly may have anxiety disorder, ask your mom to set up an appointment with your doctor. I highly doubt it is anything serious. Sometimes when we think someone is wrong with us, we make it so much worse then it is. Relax and take sometime to yourself. Then find a friend who is not surrounded by drama that you can talk to about important things that don't stress you out.
